The same word, twice over

132 Tamil words carry the weight of more than one couplet — and a word that returns rarely returns unchanged. ஆக்கம் is increase in one place and stolen gain in another; கடை is the last of a line here and a shopfront in today's Tamil. Each word below is shown wherever it falls, with what it means there.

These are not a claim that the verses are alike. Two couplets sharing a word may have nothing else in common — that is precisely what makes the comparison worth reading.

Kural 1193 The Solitary Anguish

வீழுநர் வீழப் படுவார்க்கு அமையுமே
வாழுநம் என்னும் செருக்கு

In everyday Tamil today செருக்கு means arrogance — the swagger of somebody who thinks well of himself. Parimelazhagar reads it here as தருக்கு, an elation of mind, and what produces it is not self-regard at all. It is knowing that even in his absence she is being thought of, and that he will come quickly. Pope translates it 'the boast' and Aiyar 'can pride themselves', and both turn it outward, toward something displayed to other people. The Tamil word here faces nobody. It is a private steadiness, and this reflection's most surprising move is to treat it not as a fault to be corrected but as a possession the mutually loved are entitled to keep.

நடுவன்மை நாணு பவர்

நாண் (nāṇ) — moral shame, deep ethical sensitivity; shows that those who shrink in shame from unfairness will never, for the sake of any gain, commit the disgraceful acts of greed.

பிணையேர் மடநோக்கும் நாணும் உடையாட்கு
அணியெவனோ ஏதில தந்து

நாண் (nāṇ) — Inner modest reservation and self-respect that shine far brighter than material adornments.

Kural 1132 Setting Reserve Aside

நோனா உடம்பும் உயிரும் மடலேறும்
நாணினை நீக்கி நிறுத்து

நாண் (nāṇ) — Instinctive moral reserve and self-restraint, cast aside only under intolerable agony.

Kural 1257 Reserve Overcome

நாணென ஒன்றோ அறியலம் காமத்தால்
பேணியார் பெட்ப செயின்

The usual English for nāṇ is shame, and it is a poor exchange, because English shame arrives carrying guilt with it. There is no guilt in nāṇ. It is the sense of being looked at: the small internal witness that keeps you from saying the whole thing, from running, from asking twice. Everybody has it and it is not a fault. What the Tamil does with it here is unusual. She does not defeat her nāṇ and she does not surrender it. What is said instead is that the thing was unknown to her — that something which had governed every hour of her life was, for that one hour, not a thing she had heard of. Reserve, on this account, is not a strength somebody holds. It is a relation to being watched, and it lasts exactly as long as the watching is the loudest thing present.

பேதைமை pētaimai 4 couplets
Kural 141 Not Coveting Another's Wife

பிறன்பொருளாள் பெட்டொழுகும் பேதைமை ஞாலத்து
அறம்பொருள் கண்டார்கண் இல்

பேதைமை (pētaimai) — blindness of mind, sheer folly; teaches that coveting another's partner is a tragic delusion never entertained by those of true ethical understanding.

Kural 358 Realising the Truth

பிறப்பென்னும் பேதைமை நீங்கச் சிறப்பென்னும்
செம்பொருள் காண்பது அறிவு

பேதைமை (pētaimai) — spiritual ignorance; the fundamental delusion that causes mortal rebirth, which dissolves only upon beholding the supreme Reality.

Kural 507 Testing and Trusting People

காதன்மை கந்தா அறிவறியார்த் தேறுதல்
பேதைமை எல்லாந் தரும்

பேதைமை (pētaimai) — The foolishness that results from ignoring competence in favour of liking.

Kural 1242 Speaking with the Heart

காதல் அவரிலர் ஆகநீ நோவது
பேதைமை வாழியென் நெஞ்சு

பேதைமை (pētaimai) is built from பேதை, one who does not know, plus the ending -மை that turns a quality into a thing. So it is not stupidity as an insult; it is the condition of not having seen something. That distinction is the whole reason the word can sit in this line without cruelty. She is telling her own heart that its aching rests on nothing, and Parimelazhagar closes off every other explanation: your folly, and nothing besides. Yet the same sentence carries வாழி, may you live. English will not hold both at once and usually picks one, so the line arrives either as scolding or as self-pity. In Tamil the verdict and the blessing are the same breath, and it is the blessing that makes the verdict survivable.

மருந்து maruntu 4 couplets
Kural 82 Hospitality

விருந்து புறத்ததாத் தானுண்டல் சாவா
மருந்தெனினும் வேண்டற்பாற் றன்று

மருந்து (maruntu) — the nectar of immortality; even such a miraculous feast is worthless if consumed alone while leaving a guest outside.

Kural 1091 Reading the Signs

இருநோக்கு இவளுண்கண் உள்ளது ஒருநோக்கு
நோய்நோக்கொன் றந்நோய் மருந்து

மருந்து (maruntu) — The healing glance that soothes emotional turmoil and restores certainty.

Kural 1102 Rejoicing in the Embrace

பிணிக்கு மருந்து பிறமன் அணியிழை
தன்நோய்க்குத் தானே மருந்து

மருந்து (maruntu) — A paradoxical cure where the very presence that causes love's ache is the sole healer.

Kural 1275 Making the Signs Known

செறிதொடி செய்திறந்த கள்ளம் உறுதுயர்
தீர்க்கும் மருந்தொன்று உடைத்து

மருந்து (maruntu) is medicine, and the word is doing something precise here. He does not say comfort, or hope, or that things will be all right. A medicine is a physical thing, given in a small quantity, for a named condition — Tamil even uses மருந்துக்கும் இல்லை, not so much as a medicine's worth, to mean a tiny amount. So the grief is treated as an illness with a cure, not as a mood to be talked down. Notice too where the medicine is. The line does not say her withholding is the medicine; the closing verb is one of having, so the withholding holds one. He has not been given anything and does not know what is inside. What he has decided is that a thing kept back from him is more likely to contain his remedy than his sentence.

மெய்ப்பொருள் meypporuḷ 4 couplets

அற்றம் aṟṟam 3 couplets

Kural 980 Greatness

அற்றம் மறைக்கும் பெருமை சிறுமைதான்
குற்றமே கூறி விடும்

அற்றம் (aṟṟam) — The vulnerable shortcomings and shame of others, which magnanimous greatness generously covers while pettiness gleefully exposes.

Kural 1186 The Pallor of Longing

விளக்கற்றம் பார்க்கும் இருளேபோல் கொண்கன்
முயக்கற்றம் பார்க்கும் பசப்பு

அற்றம் comes from the root அறு, to be cut, to fall short, to weaken. It does not name a thing going out of existence; it names strength dropping far enough to leave an opening. Not the lamp going dark, but the flame sinking. Not the embrace ending, but the embrace loosening. Parimelazhagar glosses it மெலிவு, a weakening, which is exactly right. Pope translates till lamp expires and Aiyar for the light to be put out; in both English lines the lamp goes out completely and the slackening the Tamil is built on disappears. The word is out of use today, and a modern speaker would say a loosening, or a gap.

அறிந்து aṟintu 3 couplets

Kural 1312 The Subtleties of Sulking

ஊடி இருந்தேமாத் தும்மினார் யாம்தம்மை
நீடுவாழ் கென்பாக் கறிந்து

அறிந்து is the plainest word for knowing: you know the road, you know the price of rice. It carries no drama of its own. Sitting last of all, after the sneeze has already happened, it does something a plain 'knowing' in English cannot quite do — it reaches backwards and changes what the sneeze was. The body's accident becomes a person's move, and nothing else has altered. Parimelazhagar will not even leave it at knowing; he writes கருதி, having reckoned, which puts the arithmetic before the sneeze rather than after it.

உள்ளம் (uḷḷam) — the thoughtful mind; thinking carefully before answering a test question so you get the right answer without fear.

Kural 798 Examining Friendship

உள்ளற்க உள்ளம் சிறுகுவ கொள்ளற்க
அல்லற்கண் ஆற்றறுப்பார் நட்பு

உள்ளம் (uḷḷam) — Protecting the inner sanctuary of high purpose from deflating pursuits and fair-weather deserters.

Kural 1170 Pining and Complaint

உள்ளம்போன்று உள்வழிச் செல்கிற்பின் வெள்ளநீர்
நீந்தல மன்னோஎன் கண்

உள்ளம் is built on உள், inside, and it names the place where thinking goes on. It is not a soul and it is not a heart. Pope writes 'my soul go forth', which gives the sentence a religious cast it does not have; Aiyar writes 'as my heart runneth', which makes it a declaration of feeling. In Tamil the claim is flatter and stranger than either: attention has already arrived at the other place, and the eyes have not, and the two belong to one person. That is an observation about how minds work, offered without any raising of the voice.

இறந்தார் இறந்தார் அனையர் சினத்தைத்
துறந்தார் துறந்தார் துணை

Kural 1188 The Pallor of Longing

பசந்தாள் இவள்என்பது அல்லால் இவளைத்
துறந்தார் அவர்என்பார் இல்

துறந்தார் is the past tense of துறத்தல், to let go of something completely — and it is the same verb Tamil uses of a person who renounces the world and everything in it. Applied to a man who has left the woman he loved, it says the leaving was whole and deliberate: not a journey, not an absence, but a putting down. English can only offer deserted or abandoned, which carry the blame but not the echo. That echo is the whole point, because this enormous word is the one nobody in the room will use.

தேற்றம் tēṟṟam 3 couplets

அன்பறிவு தேற்றம் அவாவின்மை இந்நான்கும்

தேற்றம் (tēṟṟam) — Unshakable, calm resolve that never panics under pressure.

மறமானம் மாண்ட வழிச்செலவு தேற்றம்

Kural 1153 Unendurable Separation

அரிதரோ தேற்றம் அறிவுடையார் கண்ணும்
பிரிவோ ரிடத்துண்மை யான்

தேற்றம் comes from தேறு, the settling of muddied water until it runs clear. It is not a decision to trust somebody; it is the condition of a mind that has stopped swirling. Both Pope and Aiyar write 'trust', which in English is something a person chooses to give, and that choice is precisely what is not being described. What is described is a settling that will not happen on command, however good the reasons offered for it.

பாடு pāṭu 3 couplets
Kural 409 Lack of Learning

மேற்பிறந்தா ராயினும் கல்லாதார் கீழ்ப்பிறந்தும்

பாடு (pāṭu) — true dignity; inherited status or pedigree without learning cannot equal the intrinsic majesty of an educated soul of humble birth.

Kural 768 The Excellence of an Army

அடல்தகையும் ஆற்றலும் இல்லெனினும் தானை
படைத்தகையால் பாடு பெறும்

பாடு (pāṭu) — The earned distinction and public honor that accompanies disciplined, unified bearing.

Kural 1322 The Pleasures of Temporary Estrangement

ஊடலின் தோன்றும் சிறுதுனி நல்லளி
வாடினும் பாடு பெறும்

பாடு is greatness, but greatness of a specific kind: the weight a thing shows when it is put on a scale, its standing. Parimelazhagar glosses it பெருமை. Note what it does not say. The tenderness is not enlarged by the sulk and nothing is added to it; it is the same tenderness, and it now registers. English has no single word for a thing gaining weight without gaining size, which is why translators reach either for 'greatness', which sounds too grand for a glass of buttermilk, or for 'blooms again', which quietly turns a change of standing into a change of condition. The word also carries toil and suffering in other contexts, and singing in another; neither is meant here.

புணை puṇai 3 couplets
Kural 306 Abstaining from Anger

சினமென்னும் சேர்ந்தாரைக் கொல்லி இனமென்னும்

புணை (puṇai) — life-float; family and close buddies who help you stay afloat, who get hurt if you stay angry.

Kural 1134 Setting Reserve Aside

காமக் கடும்புனல் உய்க்கும் நாணொடு
நல்லாண்மை என்னும் புணை

புணை (puṇai) — A fragile raft of dignity and decorum, overwhelmed by the unstoppable torrent of passion.

Kural 1164 Pining and Complaint

காமக் கடல்மன்னும் உண்டே அதுநீந்தும்
ஏமப் புணைமன்னும் இல்

புணை is not a boat. It is a float — logs or dried gourds lashed together — and you do not get into it. You hold on to it, and you are still in the water, still swimming, still doing the work; the float only stops you going under. Both translators write 'bark', which is a small ship, and the moment it is a ship the swimmer is out of the sea and dry. That changes what is being asked for. She is not asking to be rescued or carried across. She is asking for something to hold, and saying that even that is not there.

Kural 1149 The Rumour

Kural 1154 Unendurable Separation

அளித்தஞ்சல் என்றவர் நீப்பின் தெளித்தசொல்
தேறியார்க்கு உண்டோ தவறு

அஞ்சல் is one word that is a whole sentence: the negative imperative of அஞ்சு, to fear. It is not a description of how safe things are. It is an instruction issued to another person's mind, telling it to stop doing something it was doing on its own. English needs three words for it and, in needing them, loses the fact that a command was given and obeyed. That is what makes the closing question so hard to answer any way but one: obeying an instruction is not an error of judgement.

அளி aḷi 2 couplets
Kural 1209 Sad Remembrance

விளியுமென் இன்னுயிர் வேறல்லம் என்பார்
அளியின்மை ஆற்ற நினைந்து

அளி is tenderness — the warm, active grace one person shows another; commentators pair it with mercy and gentle care. The lines wield it through its negative, அளியின்மை, 'the absence of aḷi', and that grammar is the whole diagnosis. She is not accused of missing him too much, and he is not accused of cruelty; what is killing her is a hollow — tenderness that used to be there and now is not, in the very man who used to say 'we are not two'. Tamil's suffix of absence, இன்மை, still does this work today in words like வேலையின்மை, joblessness. Absence of grace, gracelessness as a named condition: this thought diagnoses the ailment of every long love gone flat — not distance, not anger, but the missing warmth where warmth once was.

Kural 1321 The Pleasures of Temporary Estrangement

இல்லை தவறவர்க்கு ஆயினும் ஊடுதல்
வல்லது அவர்அளிக்கு மாறு

அளி is the old Tamil word for what a small sulk is said to bring out, and Parimelazhagar thickens it to தலையளி. It is not affection as a feeling but affection extended — the care one person actually puts out toward another who is in front of them. The plate carried over. The hour given. The crossing of the room. English hands back love or kindness, and both of those can sit unspent inside a person for years. அளி cannot: it exists only once it has been shown. That is why a small sulk can be credited with producing it at all. What is brought out is not his feeling, which was there all along. It is the visible form his feeling takes.

அளித்து aḷittu 2 couplets
Kural 1168 Pining and Complaint

மன்னுயிர் எல்லாம் துயிற்றி அளித்திரா
என்னல்லது இல்லை துணை

அளித்து is built on அளி, compassion, and the form can be read in two directions: having shown grace, or being in a state that deserves grace. Pope takes the first and writes 'kind night'; Aiyar takes it too, with 'Night in her mercy'. Parimelazhagar takes the second — this night is a thing to be pitied. That choice decides who the compassion is for. On his reading the woman who cannot sleep spends her last words not on herself but on the hour that is keeping her awake, and calls it poor.

Kural 1256 Reserve Overcome

செற்றவர் பின்சேறல் வேண்டி அளித்தரோ
எற்றென்னை உற்ற துயர்

The word aḷittu comes from aḷittal, which means to show grace or to give out of pity. It is a word for a benefactor, for somebody who takes mercy on you without being asked, and she hands it to the thing that is hurting her. She could have called it cruel, and the difference matters. Cruel would only have said that it is against her. Gracious says something more exact: whom it is working for. It is working for the man who left. Saying it this way takes a certain steadiness. Somebody who picks a word instead of weeping has not lost herself in that hour.

Kural 1328 The Pleasures of Temporary Estrangement

உப்பு is the ordinary kitchen word for salt, and it is doing metaphorical work here. Parimelazhagar glosses it as இனிமை, sweetness, so the thing being wished for is the savour of that union. But the word chosen for savour is salt, and salt is not sweet and is not eaten for itself; it is what makes everything else taste of something. Going straight to 'sweetness' keeps the meaning and loses the reason: a savour credited to a pinch of something sharp. That is exactly what is being said here about a falling-out.

ஏதிலர் என்னும் இவ்வூர்

ஏதிலர் (ētilār) — Outsiders misjudging private devotion as cruelty simply because they cannot see inner devotion.

Kural 1224 Lamenting at Evening

காதலர் இல்வழி மாலை கொலைக்களத்து
ஏதிலர் போல வரும்

ஏதிலர் (ētilar) means those who are nothing to you — outsiders, people with whom you have no tie. It is not a word for wickedness. Tamil has plenty of those, and this reflection declines all of them. What it says about the men crossing the killing-ground is only that they are unrelated to the one they have come for, and Parimelazhagar tells us who they are: the executioners. Put the two halves together and you see the exact shape of the fear. It is not that the evening has grown cruel. It is that the evening now has no connection to her, while still having business with her. And this is the same evening that used to arrive, in the commentator's phrase, making her life put out new leaves. Nothing hurts quite like an old intimacy turning up with a stranger's face and an errand in its hand.

ஐம்புலத்தாறு ஓம்பல் தலை

ஓம்பல் (ōmbal) — diligent, balanced stewardship that nurtures ancestors' memory, sacred ideals, guests, extended family, and one's personal responsibilities.

Kural 1155 Unendurable Separation

ஓம்பின் அமைந்தார் பிரிவோம்பல் மற்றவர்
நீங்கின் அரிதால் புணர்வு

ஓம்பல் is the old Tamil verb for keeping something alive by tending it: a fire, a herd, a guest, a body. It is not rescue and not restraint; it is the daily work of not letting a thing go out. The first line uses it twice, once for guarding a life and once for holding back a man's journey, and that repetition is the argument. English has to choose two different verbs, guard and restrain, and the moment it does, the claim that these are one act disappears.

கடை kaṭai 2 couplets
Kural 142 Not Coveting Another's Wife

அறன்கடை நின்றாருள் எல்லாம் பிறன்கடை
நின்றாரின் பேதையார் இல்

கடை (kaṭai) — doorway, threshold, and utter degradation; reveals that among all who wander outside virtue, none is more utterly foolish than one who lingers at another's door.

Kural 1195 The Solitary Anguish

நாம்காதல் கொண்டார் நமக்கெவன் செய்பவோ
தாம்காதல் கொள்ளாக் கடை

In modern Tamil கடை means a shop, and almost nothing else. The older senses — an end, an edge, a state, an occasion — survive now only inside words like கடைசி, the last. Here it carries the whole condition: கொள்ளாக் கடை, the state in which he does not take up that love. Notice that it is a noun. English has to use 'unless', as Pope does, or 'if he loveth me not', as Aiyar does, and both of those are words of logic that stand outside the sentence and rule on it. The Tamil does not rule on anything. It names the state as a place, the way you would name the ground somebody happens to be standing on, and asks its question from inside that place rather than about it.

Kural 1292 Quarrelling with the Heart

உறாஅ தவர்க்கண்ட கண்ணும் அவரைச்
செறாஅரெனச் சேறியென் நெஞ்சு

செறாஅர் (ceṟāar) is the negative of ceṟu, to be angry or hostile: one who will not be harsh. Read it slowly and notice what it is not. It is not 'he loves me', not 'he wants me there', not even 'he is glad'. It is a prediction that no anger will come — a bad thing that will fail to happen, offered as a reason to go. The stretched vowel, ceṟāa, is a metrical lengthening, and it is placed to answer uṟāa in the first line, where he is named as one who does not draw near. The two long sounds hold the whole argument between them: he will not come close, and he will not be angry, and the heart has decided the second cancels the first.

துப்பாய தூஉம் மழை

துப்பு (thuppu) — Food, nourishment, and sustaining energy. Rain creates the food and itself serves as food.

Kural 1165 Pining and Complaint

துப்பின் எவனாவர் மன்கொல் துயர்வரவு
நட்பினுள் ஆற்று பவர்

துப்பு is a word that had to be decided. In older Tamil it can mean strength, or hostility, or even food, and the line does not say which is intended. Parimelazhagar settles on hostility, since what is needed here is the opposite pole to friendship. What a translation cannot show is that a choice was made: Pope writes 'angry tempests' and Aiyar 'when they are enemies', and each reads as though the word had only ever meant one thing. Part of reading old Tamil is knowing where the text left a decision open and somebody else has closed it for you.

தும்மல் tummal 2 couplets
Kural 1203 Sad Remembrance

நினைப்பவர் போன்று நினையார்கொல் தும்மல்
சினைப்பது போன்று கெடும்

தும்மல் is simply a sneeze — but to a Tamil ear it is never simply that. An old belief, still alive in many homes, holds that a sneeze comes when someone somewhere is thinking of you; people even laugh, 'somebody must be remembering me.' The whole couplet stands on that belief. Her sneeze rose as if to come and then died, and because a sneeze means being-thought-of, she reads its failure as his thought failing too — begun toward her, stopped before it broke. To an English reader a sneeze is a bodily event and this makes no sense; to a Tamil reader it is an omen of love's memory, and the failed omen is the whole ache.

Kural 1253 Reserve Overcome

மறைப்பேன்மன் காமத்தை யானோ குறிப்பின்றித்
தும்மல்போல் தோன்றி விடும்

The plain Tamil word for a sneeze is tummal, and what it settles is ownership. A sneeze happens in your body and is in no sense your act: you cannot schedule it, you cannot delay it long, and you cannot hide that it happened. Putting a held-back feeling inside that word says something English sentences about concealment usually miss. What surfaced was not a failure of will, because will was never in charge of the timing.

சிறுமையும் செல்லாத் துனியும் வறுமையும்
இல்லாயின் வெல்லும் படை

துனி (tuṉi) — Poisonous internal resentment and bitter grievances that silently undermine unit solidarity.

Kural 1294 Quarrelling with the Heart

இனிஅன்ன நின்னொடு சூழ்வார்யார் நெஞ்சே
துனிசெய்து துவ்வாய்காண் மற்று

துனி (tuṉi) is an old word for displeasure shown between lovers — a coolness held on purpose for a while, then set down. English 'sulk' is the wrong size for it, because a sulk is something that overtakes a person, while the line pairs tuṉi with ceytu, to make: this is displeasure performed, not suffered. That single pairing shows it was an arrangement rather than a mood, something she and her heart had settled on beforehand, with an order to it — first the coolness, measured against what he did, and only then the pleasure. So the charge is not coldness and not softness. It is that a party to an agreement did not keep it, which is why it ends by asking who would ever plan anything with it again.

நல்காமை nalkāmai 2 couplets
Kural 1190 The Pallor of Longing

பசப்பெனப் பேர்பெறுதல் நன்றே நயப்பித்தார்
நல்காமை தூற்றார் எனின்

நல்காமை is not a word for cruelty. The verb inside it is நல்கு, which means to grant something because you want to grant it — shelter, an answer, the grace of your attention — and the ending -ஆமை turns that giving into its own absence. So the charge she is keeping away from him is not that he was wicked. It is that he gave nothing. Pope translates it 'unkind' and Aiyar 'cruelty', and both make it a quality he carries about with him. The Tamil makes it a thing that failed to happen, and that is exactly why she wants it stopped before it starts. A man can be defended against something he did. Something he did not do has no shape to argue with.

Kural 1232 The Wasting Away

நயந்தவர் நல்காமை சொல்லுவ போலும்
பசந்து பனிவாரும் கண்

நல்காமை (nalkāmai) is built by negation. நல்குதல் is to grant, to bestow, to show grace — the giving that a person in a position to give does freely. Put the negative ending on it and what you have is not cruelty but a withholding: the grace that was his to give and was not given. That distinction is the whole force of the line. Tamil is not short of words for cruelty, and the friend does not reach for one. She takes the word that names an absence, because an absence is precisely what the eyes are reporting: nothing was done to her, and that is the charge. There is a further, quieter cruelty in the arrangement of the words. நயந்தவர், the man she set her heart on, stands immediately before நல்காமை. The wanting and the not-giving are printed next to each other and nobody comments on it.

நாடி nāṭi 2 couplets
Kural 511 Choosing People for Responsibilities

நன்மையும் தீமையும் நாடி நலம்புரிந்த
தன்மையான் ஆளப் படும்

நாடி (nāṭi) — Examining situations and consequences carefully before deciding.

Kural 1214 The Visions of the Night

கனவினான் உண்டாகும் காமம் நனவினான்
நல்காரை நாடித் தரற்கு

The word nāṭi is 'having sought out' — from nāṭu, a verb still fully alive: you nāṭu a doctor, help, a livelihood. It means going after something, seeking with intent, and inside it there is always a grain of wanting. This is the word that turns the dream from a picture into a courier. In 1213 the dream merely showed him; here it works: it goes to wherever he has gone — Parimelazhagar's phrase — finds the man who refuses every waking summons, and carries him home. The tenderness here hides in the agent: she does not accuse him of coming to torment her (that is 1217's bitter turn); she credits her own dream with the errand, as if some loyal part of her refuses to accept the refusal, and slips out each night to do what no application, ticket, or telephone has managed. Love, this word says, does not only wait. Even asleep, it goes and fetches.

Kural 871 Assessing Enmity

பகைஎன்னும் பண்பி லதனை ஒருவன்
நகையேயும் வேண்டற்பாற்று அன்று

பகை (pakai) — Harmful hostility that destroys trust and friendships when allowed into casual banter.

Kural 1225 Lamenting at Evening

காலைக்குச் செய்தநன்று என்கொல் எவன்கொல்யான்
மாலைக்குச் செய்த பகை?

பகை (pakai) is enmity, and in Tamil the word covers both the standing hostility and the act that started it — which is exactly the sense needed here, since Parimelazhagar glosses it as அபகாரம், an injury done. That is what makes the question so precise. She is not asking why the evening is unkind. She is asking what she did to it: this reflection assumes, as people in pain always assume, that hostility must have a cause and that the cause is probably hers. And she puts the fair version of the question, not the self-pitying one. If the evening must have been provoked, then the morning must have been repaid for something, and she cannot name that favour either. Two questions, one shape, no answers. This thought leaves them open, and the honest reader has to conclude that the day divides itself for reasons that have nothing to do with what anyone deserves.

பணிமொழி paṇimoḻi 2 couplets
Kural 1121 Declaring the Excellence of Love

பாலொடு தேன்கலந் தற்றே பணிமொழி

Kural 1258 Reserve Overcome

பன்மாயக் கள்வன் பணிமொழி அன்றோநம்

The word paṇimoḻi joins paṇi, to bow or lower oneself, to moḻi, a word spoken. Between them they name speech that puts the speaker beneath the listener, and in Tamil it is ordinarily a good thing — how you address an elder, or somebody whose help you need. Here it is the name of a weapon. That is the whole force of it: what came at her was not pressure but deference, and deference leaves nothing to resist. The thief is not accused of speaking falsely. He is accused of speaking low, and of knowing exactly what low speech does.

புலத்தை pulattai 2 couplets
Kural 343 Renunciation

அடல்வேண்டும் ஐந்தன் புலத்தை விடல்வேண்டும்

புலத்தை (pulattai) — sensory desires; not whining for extra candy or sweets when mom says you have had enough.

Kural 1301 Sulking

புல்லா திராஅப் புலத்தை அவர்உறும்
அல்லல்நோய் காண்கம் சிறிது

புலத்தை is spoken to one person and it means: you, keep sulking. The noun behind it is புலவி, which is what this whole chapter is called, and 'sulk' is a thin English word for it. A sulk in English is what a child does at a table and what an adult gets forgiven for. புலவி here is something else. Parimelazhagar's word for it is தொழில் — an occupation, a thing taken up and carried on. Nobody calls a temper that lands on them an occupation. That is why the instruction is not 'be angry with him' but 'do not let this drop'. It is being done on purpose, which means the person doing it can stop whenever she likes, and the last word of the line already says how far it should run: சிறிது, a little. The moment the other person can no longer tell it is being done on purpose, this word has stopped describing what is happening, whatever it looks like from outside.

Kural 1039 Farming

புலந்து (pulantu) — The living soil turning cold and infertile in response to an absentee owner's negligent laziness.

Kural 1287 Desire for Reunion

உய்த்தல் அறிந்து புனல்பாய் பவரேபோல்
பொய்த்தல் அறிந்தென் புலந்து

புலந்து comes from புலத்தல், a word kept for the sulk that happens only between two people who love each other. It is not anger at somebody you dislike and not an argument about a fact; it is warmth withheld on purpose from a person who expects it, and by its nature it is made to end. Set beside it is a picture: somebody jumping into water that is moving, water they know will carry them off. The sulk is entered the same way, with its ending already known.

பூசல் pūsal 2 couplets
Kural 71 The Possession of Love

அன்பிற்கும் உண்டோ அடைக்குந்தாழ் ஆர்வலர்
புன்கணீர் பூசல் தரும்

பூசல் (pūsal) — the unmistakable outward revelation of inward love through tender, uncontrollable tears for another's distress.

Kural 1237 The Wasting Away

பாடு பெறுதியோ நெஞ்சே கொடியார்க்கென்
வாடுதோட் பூசல் உரைத்து

பூசல் (pūcal) is clamour: the din of a fight, the uproar of a crowd, the noise a town makes about somebody. Modern Tamil has largely let the word go, and losing it costs the line something, because of what it is applied to. She does not say the pain of my wasting arm, or the state of my wasting arm. She says its clamour. A private grief has been reclassified as a public sound — something with volume, something already audible to people who were never told. And that reclassification is what makes her question unanswerable. Her heart wants to go and report the noise to a crowd that is standing inside it. Parimelazhagar keeps the irony intact: if you can win any distinction that way, he says, nothing equals it.

பேணாது pēṇātu 2 couplets
Kural 1178 Eyes Worn Out with Grief

பேணாது பெட்டார் உளர்மன்னோ மற்றவர்க்
காணாது அமைவில கண்

பேணாது is the negative of பேணுதல், and பேணுதல் is not a word for feeling. It is the verb for tending something — keeping a lamp lit, keeping a house in order, keeping a custom alive. So the charge in the line is very exact. It does not say he did not love her. It says none of the tending ever happened. Parimelazhagar's gloss is harder still: the wanting and the not-tending were going on at the same time, in the same man, and words were the only part of him that arrived.

Kural 1283 Desire for Reunion

பேணாது பெட்பவே செய்யினும் கொண்கனைக்
காணா தமையல கண்

பேணாது is built on பேணுதல், which is not a word about feeling at all. It is about tending: keeping a thing fed, watched, mended, held together so it does not fall apart. So its negative does not accuse him of cruelty or of hatred. It says the tending stopped. Parimelazhagar reads it harder still, as அவமதித்து, slighting, and neither reading is softened anywhere in the two lines. The woman speaking these lines names the failure exactly, and only then says anything about her eyes.

பொழுது (poḻutu) — The fitting season, moment, or hour required to achieve success.

Kural 1215 The Visions of the Night

நனவினால் கண்டதூஉம் ஆங்கே கனவுந்தான்
கண்ட பொழுதே இனிது

The word poḻutu is Tamil's own name for a span of time — the day 'opens' (poḻutu viṭintatu) and 'tilts down' (poḻutu cāyntatu) in it; it is dawn, dusk, the while something lasts. Here it wears the restrictive particle ē — poḻutē, 'only in the moment' — and that little vowel is the whole argument. She has tested both of her joys, the remembered real one and last night's dreamed one, and found they share one lifespan: the moment of seeing, not a second longer. The word carries no bitterness. It is the vessel's honest label, not a complaint about the vessel: joy comes moment-sized, in waking and in dream alike, and once you accept the size, the dream stops being a counterfeit and the present visit stops being wasted on grief for its ending. Everything sweet is sweet in its poḻutu. The wisdom is to be there when it is.

Kural 1254 Reserve Overcome

The open common ground of a settlement is the maṉṟu: the place with no walls, where the village gathers and where disputes were once settled. Saying that something came into the maṉṟu is stronger than saying it became known. Knowledge can stay quiet and travel slowly. The maṉṟu is a location: people are standing in it, they see at the same moment, and there is nowhere in it to step behind.

Kural 1135 Setting Reserve Aside

மாலை (mālai) — The poignant twilight hour when solitude magnifies longing into unbearable sharpness.

Kural 1221 Lamenting at Evening

மாலையோ அல்லை மணந்தார் உயிருண்ணும்
வேலைநீ வாழி பொழுது

மாலை (mālai) is the ordinary Tamil word for evening, the stretch between the sun going down and the lamps being lit. In classical poetry it is the settled hour for lovers to meet, which is exactly why, in a separation, it is the hour with the most to lose. This reflection does something startling with the word: it addresses the evening politely, wishes it long life, and then refuses it its own name. You are not evening, she says. Evening is what used to come. What arrives now is the hour that eats the lives of women who are wedded — Parimelazhagar reads வேலை as இறுதிக்காலம், the final hour, so this is a re-identification rather than an insult. Notice that the blessing is not withdrawn. வாழி stands there still. She is not cursing the clock; she is telling it, courteously and exactly, what it has become.

வன்கண் vaṉkaṇ 2 couplets
Kural 1198 The Solitary Anguish

வீழ்வாரின் இன்சொல் பெறாஅது உலகத்து
வாழ்வாரின் வன்கணார் இல்

வன்கண் puts together வன், hard, and கண், the eye. Tamil locates pity in the eye, so a hard eye means a person who can look at suffering and not move. The speaker turns that word on herself. She is not saying she is brave; she is saying she has become the kind of person who can watch her own life go unanswered and go on eating and sleeping through it. English has no single word that praises and condemns in the same breath, which is why one translator reaches for 'braver souls' and another for 'hard-hearted', and each loses the other half.

Kural 1222 Lamenting at Evening

புன்கண்ணை வாழி மருள்மாலை எம்கேள்போல்
வன்கண்ண தோநின் துணை

வன்கண் (vaṉkaṇ) is pitilessness, and the word is built out of an observation about faces: an eye that feels for you softens, and an eye that does not stays hard. So வன்கண் is not cruelty in the sense of wanting to hurt. It is the absence of the softening — a person who simply does not relent. What makes this the heart of this reflection is where she puts the word. She does not say that her own man is pitiless. She looks at the dimmed evening, decides it must be suffering as she is, and asks it whether its companion is hard-eyed like hers. Both halves of that are worth noticing: the charge against her lover is never made directly, and the fellow-feeling is offered to an hour rather than to a person. Grief at this hour will make a companion out of anything, and it will still be too proud to accuse the one who caused it.

Kural 1302 Sulking

உப்பமைந் தற்றால் புலவி அதுசிறிது
மிக்கற்றால் நீள விடல்

விடல் is not something a person does. It is something a person does not do: the word names leaving a thing alone, not stopping it, allowing it to carry on. Here it stands with நீள, to lengthen, so what is being named is the letting of the sulk run on. It is worth noticing that the fault described in this line is an omission and not an act. Nobody shouts and nobody is cruel. Somebody simply does not stop, and the claim is that not stopping, even by a little, is already past the amount. English needs a whole phrase, letting it run on, and a phrase sounds like a decision somebody took. விடல் does not sound like anything at all, and that is why nothing is easier than doing it.
