Those who reach the feet of the Sovereign Divine cross the vast sea of change; those who do not sink helplessly within it.

பிறவிப் பெருங்கடல் நீந்துவர் நீந்தார்
இறைவன் அடிசேரா தார்

Rain is the force that ruins with its absence, and rain returning in season is what lifts the ruined back to life.

கெடுப்பதூஉம் கெட்டார்க்குச் சார்வாய்மற் றாங்கே
எடுப்பதூஉம் எல்லாம் மழை

If life cannot go on for anyone without water, then moral order itself cannot endure without rain.

நீர்இன்று அமையாது உலகெனின் யார்யார்க்கும்
வான்இன்று அமையாது ஒழுக்கு

Measuring the greatness of those who have renounced attachment is like trying to count everyone who has ever died on earth.

துறந்தார் பெருமை துணைக்கூறின் வையத்து
இறந்தாரை எண்ணிக்கொண் டற்று

Those who discern the transient from the eternal and embrace virtue in this life stand highest in the world.

இருமை வகைதெரிந்து ஈண்டுஅறம் பூண்டார்
பெருமை பிறங்கிற்று உலகு

Those who accomplish rare and arduous deeds of virtue are truly great; those who cannot bring themselves to do them are small.

செயற்கரிய செய்வார் பெரியர் சிறியர்
செயற்கரிய செய்கலா தார்

There is no greater gain than the practice of virtue, and no greater ruin than forgetting it.

அறத்தினூஉங்கு ஆக்கமும் இல்லை அதனை
மறத்தலின் ஊங்கில்லை கேடு

One need not explain through texts the fruit of virtue; the visible contrast between the palanquin-bearer and the rider shows it plain.

அறத்தாறு இதுவென வேண்டா சிவிகை
பொறுத்தானோடு ஊர்ந்தான் இடை

True delight flows only from a life of virtue; all other pleasures bring sorrow and are devoid of honor.

அறத்தான் வருவதே இன்பம் மற்றெல்லாம்
புறத்த புகழும் இல

Virtue alone is what a person must do; whatever earns blame is what must be shunned.

செயற்பால தோரும் அறனே ஒருவற்கு
உயற்பால தோரும் பழி

Whoever lives family life according to its true nature stands foremost among all who strive for spiritual mastery.

இயல்பினான் இல்வாழ்க்கை வாழ்பவன் என்பான்
முயல்வாருள் எல்லாம் தலை

A family life that keeps others on the right path without slipping from virtue has greater endurance than the austerities of ascetics.

ஆற்றின் ஒழுக்கி அறனிழுக்கா இல்வாழ்க்கை
நோற்பாரின் நோன்மை உடைத்து

What blessing is lacking if the companion of the house is noble? And what is truly gained if she lacks inner nobility?

இல்லதென் இல்லவள் மாண்பானால் உள்ளதென்
இல்லவள் மாணாக் கடை?

What in this world possesses greater dignity than a woman who holds the firm fortitude of steadfast fidelity?

பெண்ணின் பெருந்தக்க யாவுள கற்பென்னும்
திண்மைஉண் டாகப் பெறின்

Among all treasures one may acquire in life, there is no greater blessing than raising children endowed with true discernment and wisdom.

பெறுமவற்றுள் யாமறிவது இல்லை அறிவறிந்த
மக்கட்பேறு அல்ல பிற

Even simple porridge stirred by the tiny hands of one's dear children is sweeter by far than heavenly ambrosia.

அமிழ்தினும் ஆற்ற இனிதேதம் மக்கள்
சிறுகை அளாவிய கூழ்

Embracing one's children is delight to the body; and listening to their sweet speech is sheer bliss to the ear.

மக்கள்மெய் தீண்டல் உடற்கின்பம் மற்றுஅவர்
சொற்கேட்டல் இன்பம் செவிக்கு

'The flute is sweet, the lute is sweet,' say only those who have never heard the tender babble of their own little ones.

குழல்இனிது யாழ்இனிது என்பதம் மக்கள்
மழலைச்சொல் கேளா தவர்

A mother rejoices with greater joy when she hears her child acclaimed as noble and wise than on the day she gave birth.

ஈன்ற பொழுதின் பெரிதுவக்கும் தன்மகனைச்
சான்றோன் எனக்கேட்ட தாய்

Those devoid of love claim all things for themselves; those who possess love yield even their very bones to serve others.

அன்பிலார் எல்லாம் தமக்குரியர் அன்புடையார்
என்பும் உரியர் பிறர்க்கு

Just as the scorching sun burns up boneless creatures of the dust, so does righteous justice wither those devoid of love.

என்பி லதனை வெயில்போலக் காயுமே
அன்பி லதனை அறம்

Even if the dish were the ambrosia of immortality, it is unworthy to feast alone while a guest waits outside unfed.

விருந்து புறத்ததாத் தானுண்டல் சாவா
மருந்தெனினும் வேண்டற்பாற் றன்று

The anicham flower withers merely upon being smelled; but a guest withers the instant the host's face turns cold.

மோப்பக் குழையும் அனிச்சம் முகந்திரிந்து
நோக்கக் குநழ்யும் விருந்து

To greet another with a beaming smile and pleasant words is better even than giving gifts with a glad heart.

அகன்அமர்ந்து ஈதலின் நன்றே முகனமர்ந்து
இன்சொலன் ஆகப் பெறின்

To speak harsh words when pleasant words are available is like choosing to eat bitter raw fruit when sweet ripe fruit is at hand.

இனிய உளவாக இன்னாத கூறல்
கனிஇருப்பக் காய்கவர்ந் தற்று

A kindness done for you by someone you had never helped first is so rare that all the earth and all the sky, given in return, could hardly repay it.

செய்யாமல் செய்த உதவிக்கு வையகமும்
வானகமும் ஆற்றல் அரிது

A favour may be small in itself, yet if it comes at the exact hour of need, it is greater by far than the whole world.

காலத்தி னாற்செய்த நன்றி சிறிதெனினும்
ஞாலத்தின் மாணப் பெரிது

When you truly weigh the goodwill of those who helped you without once asking what they would get back, it runs deeper than the sea.

பயன்தூக்கார் செய்த உதவி நயன்தூக்கின்
நன்மை கடலின் பெரிது

A good done to them may be as small as a millet seed, but those who know what a kindness is worth hold it as large as a palmyra tree.

தினைத்துணை நன்றி செயினும் பனைத்துணையாக்
கொள்வர் பயன்தெரி வார்

To forget a kindness done to you is not right; to forget a wrong the very day it is done — that is right.

நன்றி மறப்பது நன்றன்று நன்றல்லது
அன்றே மறப்பது நன்று

Those who have destroyed every other good may still find a way back; but for the one who destroys a kindness done to them, there is none.

எந்நன்றி கொன்றார்க்கும் உய்வுண்டாம் உய்வில்லை
செய்ந்நன்றி கொன்ற மகற்கு

Self-control carries a person up to the world of the gods; the lack of it sweeps them into unending darkness.

அடக்கம் அமரருள் உய்க்கும் அடங்காமை
ஆரிருள் உய்த்து விடும்

Guard your self-control as your one true treasure — life holds no greater wealth than this.

காக்க பொருளா அடக்கத்தை ஆக்கம்
அதனினூஉங் கில்லை உயிர்க்கு

One who never swerves from his place and holds himself in stands taller than a mountain.

நிலையின் திரியாது அடங்கியான் தோற்றம்
மலையினும் மாணப் பெரிது

Humility becomes everyone, but on those who are prosperous it shines like a crowning wealth.

எல்லார்க்கும் நன்றாம் பணிதல் அவருள்ளும்
செல்வர்க்கே செல்வம் தகைத்து

A burn from fire heals over in time, but the wound burned in by the tongue never heals.

தீயினாற் சுட்டபுண் உள்ளாறும் ஆறாதே
நாவினாற் சுட்ட வடு

Because right conduct brings honour to everyone, guard it even more carefully than life itself.

ஒழுக்கம் விழுப்பந் தரலான் ஒழுக்கம்
உயிரினும் ஓம்பப் படும்

Search and weigh all you like — you will find no surer ally than right conduct; so watch over it and protect it with effort.

பரிந்தோம்பிக் காக்க ஒழுக்கம் தெரிந்தோம்பித்
தேரினும் அஃதே துணை

Even if a learned person forgets the texts studied, they can be learned again; but if personal conduct slips, honour and stature are destroyed.

மறப்பினும் ஓத்துக் கொளலாகும் பார்ப்பான்
பிறப்பொழுக்கங் குன்றக் கெடும்

As the envious gain no prosperity, so those without good conduct gain no real dignity.

அழுக்கா றுடையான்கண் ஆக்கம்போன்று இல்லை
ஒழுக்க மிலான்கண் உயர்வு

By right conduct people rise to greatness; by lapsing from it they draw disgrace they need never have had.

ஒழுக்கத்தின் எய்துவர் மேன்மை இழுக்கத்தின்
எய்துவர் எய்தாப் பழி

Good conduct is the seed of every good; bad conduct yields sorrow without end.

நன்றிக்கு வித்தாகும் நல்லொழுக்கம் தீயொழுக்கம்
என்றும் இடும்பை தரும்

Of all who have strayed from virtue, none is a greater fool than the one who waits at another man's door.

அறன்கடை நின்றாருள் எல்லாம் பிறன்கடை
நின்றாரின் பேதையார் இல்

Those who betray the home of a friend who trusts them are, though living, no different from the dead.

விளிந்தாரின் வேறல்லர் மன்ற தெளிந்தாரில்
தீமை புரிந்து ஒழுகுவார்

The great courage of not even looking with desire on another's wife is, for the noble, not just virtue but the fullness of right conduct.

பிறன்மனை நோக்காத பேராண்மை சான்றோர்க்கு
அறனொன்றோ ஆன்ற வொழுக்கு

The ground holds up even the people who dig into it. The finest strength is to bear with those who look down on you.

அகழ்வாரைத் தாங்கும் நிலம்போலத் தம்மை
இகழ்வார்ப் பொறுத்தல் தலை

To forgive a wrong is always good. To forget it — to not even carry it — is better still.

பொறுத்தல் இறப்பினை என்றும் அதனை
மறத்தல் அதனினும் நன்று

The worst poverty is sending a guest away hungry. The greatest strength is bearing with people who act out of ignorance.

இன்மையுள் இன்மை விருந்தொரால் வன்மையுள்
வன்மை மடவார்ப் பொறை

The one who strikes back is counted as nothing. The one who bore the wrong is kept like gold — wrapped, tucked away, held close.

ஒறுத்தாரை ஒன்றாக வையாரே வைப்பர்
பொறுத்தாரைப் பொன்போற் பொதிந்து

Striking back buys you a single day's satisfaction. Bearing the wrong earns you a name that outlasts the world.

ஒறுத்தார்க்கு ஒருநாளை இன்பம் பொறுத்தார்க்குப்
பொன்றுந் துணையும் புகழ்

Those who can absorb the cruel words of people who've lost all decency are as pure as those who renounced the world — and they never left ordinary life.

துறந்தாரின் தூய்மை உடையர் இறந்தார்வாய்
இன்னாச்சொல் நோற்கிற் பவர்

We call those who fast and endure hunger great. Greater still are those who endure other people's cruel words.

உண்ணாது நோற்பார் பெரியர் பிறர்சொல்லும்
இன்னாச்சொல் நோற்பாரின் பின்

Of all the fine things one can gain, none equals a nature free of envy toward anyone at all.

விழுப்பேற்றின் அஃதொப்பது இல்லையார் மாட்டும்
அழுக்காற்றின் அன்மை பெறின்

The wealth of an envious heart and the ruin of an upright one are both things that make you wonder.

அவ்விய நெஞ்சத்தான் ஆக்கமும் செவ்வியான்
கேடும் நினைக்கப் படும்

No one ever grew great by envy, and no generous heart ever fell from greatness.

அழுக்கற்று அகன்றாரும் இல்லை அஃதுஇல்லார்
பெருக்கத்தில் தீர்ந்தாரும் இல்

Those who long for the lasting joy of virtue never do wrong for the fleeting pleasure that seizing another's wealth might buy.

சிற்றின்பம் வெஃகி அறனல்ல செய்யாரே
மற்றின்பம் வேண்டு பவர்

Reckless coveting breeds ruin; the proud wealth of wanting nothing breeds victory over all.

இறலீனும் எண்ணாது வெஃகின் விறல்ஈனும்
வேண்டாமை என்னுஞ் செருக்கு

To deny that virtue exists and then do evil is bad; but to smile to a person's face and tear them down behind their back is worse.

அறனழீஇ அல்லவை செய்தலின் தீதே
புறனழீஇப் பொய்த்து நகை

Speaking useless words in front of many people is worse even than doing unwelcome things to your own friends.

பயனில பல்லார்முன் சொல்லல் நயனில
நட்டார்கண் செய்தலிற் றீது

Even if the wise, under circumstance, speak harsh or unpleasing words, that can be borne; but it is far better that they completely refrain from useless, empty words.

நயனில சொல்லினுஞ் சொல்லுக சான்றோர்
பயனில சொல்லாமை நன்று

Of all words spoken, utter only those that bear genuine fruit; never speak words devoid of benefit.

சொல்லுக சொல்லிற் பயனுடைய சொல்லற்க
சொல்லிற் பயனிலாச் சொல்

Those accustomed to wrongdoing feel no dread of evil deeds; but the noble and virtuous dread that reckless arrogance as a mortal danger.

தீவினையார் அஞ்சார் விழுமியார் அஞ்சுவர்
தீவினை என்னும் செருக்கு

Because evil deeds inevitably produce suffering for the doer, one must fear doing evil even more than physical fire. Fire burns only what it touches; evil deeds destroy one's soul and posterity.

தீயவை தீய பயத்தலால் தீயவை
தீயினும் அஞ்சப் படும்

One may somehow escape the fiercest external enemy; but the hostility created by one's own evil deeds never leaves, tracking down and destroying the wrongdoer.

எனைப்பகை யுற்றாரும் உய்வர் வினைப்பகை
வீயாது பின்சென்று அடும்

Both in this earthly world and in the world of the celestials, it is rare to find a greater good than living in fitting service to others.

புத்தே ளுலகத்தும் ஈண்டும் பெறலரிதே
ஒப்புரவின் நல்ல பிற

One who understands and fulfills their duty to society is truly alive; one who neglects it, though breathing, is counted among the dead.

ஒத்த தறவோன் உயிர்வாழ்வான் மற்றையான்
செத்தாருள் வைக்கப் படும்

Wealth acquired by a wise person devoted to public good is like a village reservoir overflowing with clean water for everyone.

ஊருணி நீர்நிறைந் தற்றே உலகவாம்
பேரறி வாளன் திரு

Giving to the truly destitute who possess nothing is genuine charity; giving to others resembles a loan made with the expectation of a return.

வறியார்க்கொன்று ஈவதே ஈகைமற் றெல்லாம்
குறியெதிர்ப்பை நீர துடைத்து

Even if receiving from others were praised as a good path, it is still demeaning; even if there were no heavenly reward, giving to others remains supreme.

நல்லாறு எனினும் கொளல்தீது மேலுலகம்
இல்லெனினும் ஈதலே நன்று

The endurance of ascetics who bear their own hunger is great; yet it ranks behind the power of the generous who extinguish the hunger of others.

ஆற்றுவார் ஆற்றல் பசிஆற்றல் அப்பசியை
மாற்றுவார் ஆற்றலின் பின்

Hoarding wealth and feasting alone while ignoring the starving around you is far more shameful than begging for food.

இரத்தலின் இன்னாது மன்ற நிரப்பிய
தாமே தமியர் உணல்

Nothing is more agonizing than death; yet even death becomes sweet when one is utterly unable to give relief to the poor.

சாதலின் இன்னாத தில்லை இனிததூஉம்
ஈதல் இயையாக் கடை

Apart from incomparable renown that rises through virtuous deeds, nothing else in this transient world stands without dying away.

ஒன்றா உலகத்து உயர்ந்த புகழல்லால்
பொன்றாது நிற்பதொன் றில்

Transforming material loss into moral growth, and bodily death into immortal presence, is a rare mastery achieved only by the truly wise.

நத்தம்போல் கேடும் உளதாகும் சாக்காடும்
வித்தகர்க் கல்லால் அரிது

Those who live without reproach and adorned with renown are truly alive; those who live without worthy praise, though breathing, are not alive at all.

வசையொழிய வாழ்வாரே வாழ்வார் இசையொழிய
வாழ்வாரே வாழா தவர்

Compassion toward all living beings is the wealth of wealths; mere material riches are possessed even by the base and ignoble.

அருட்செல்வம் செல்வத்துள் செல்வம் பொருட்செல்வம்
பூரியார் கண்ணும் உள

Just as this earthly world offers no joy to those without material resources, the higher spiritual realm offers no entry to those without compassion.

அருளில்லார்க்கு அவ்வுலகம் இல்லை பொருளில்லார்க்கு
இவ்வுலகம் இல்லாகி யாங்கு

Those stripped of material wealth may one day rise and prosper again; but those devoid of compassion remain morally ruined, and their restoration is exceedingly rare.

பொருளற்றார் பூப்பர் ஒருகால் அருளற்றார்
அற்றார்மற் றாதல் அரிது

When examined closely, the supposed virtue performed by someone devoid of compassion is as hollow as an ignorant fool claiming to perceive ultimate truth.

தெருளாதான் மெய்ப்பொருள் கண்டற்றால் தேரின்
அருளாதான் செய்யும் அறம்

Those who do not safeguard wealth cannot receive its benefit; likewise, those who eat flesh cannot receive the governing benefit of compassion.

பொருளாட்சி போற்றாதார்க்கு இல்லை அருளாட்சி
ஆங்கில்லை ஊன்தின் பவர்க்கு

As the mind of one holding a killing weapon does not incline toward good, the mind of one who has savoured another creature's body does not incline toward good.

படைகொண்டார் நெஞ்சம்போல் நன்னூக்காது ஒன்றன்
உடல்சுவை உண்டார் மனம்

Better than pouring offerings into fire and performing a thousand sacrifices is refusing to eat flesh obtained by taking even one creature's life.

அவிசொரிந் தாயிரம் வேட்டலின் ஒன்றன்
உயிர்செகுத் துண்ணாமை நன்று

Those who practise austerity perform the work proper to them; the others, caught in desire, act vainly and to their own harm.

தவஞ்செய்வார் தங்கருமஞ் செய்வார்மற் றல்லார்
அவஞ்செய்வார் ஆசையுட் பட்டு

As gold shines brighter with repeated heating, those capable of austerity are said to shine more as its hardship presses them.

சுடச்சுடரும் பொன்போல் ஒளிவிடும் துன்பஞ்
சுடச்சுட நோற்கிற் பவர்க்கு

A person without inner self-mastery who assumes the powerful appearance of an ascetic is like a cow grazing under a tiger's skin.

வலியில் நிலைமையான் வல்லுருவம் பெற்றம்
புலியின்தோல் போர்த்துமேய்ந் தற்று

Doing wrong while hidden inside the appearance of austerity is like a hunter concealed in scrub while trapping birds.

தவமறைந்து அல்லவை செய்தல் புதல்மறைந்து
வேட்டுவன் புள்சிமிழ்த் தற்று

None is more hard-hearted than those who have not renounced attachment inwardly, yet live by deceiving others as though they had renounced.

நெஞ்சின் துறவார் துறந்தார்போல் வஞ்சித்து
வாழ்வாரின் வன்கணார் இல்

Some people may look as bright as the outer red of a kunri seed, yet within be dark like its black tip, says the verse.

புறங்குன்றி கண்டனைய ரேனும் அகங்குன்றி
முக்கிற் கரியார் உடைத்து

As virtue abides in the heart of those who understand measured discernment, concealment abides in the heart of those practiced in theft.

அளவறிந்தார் நெஞ்சத் தறம்போல நிற்கும்
களவறிந்தார் நெஞ்சில் கரவு

For those who practise theft, even the stability of embodied life will fail; for those who do not steal, the divine world will not fail.

கள்வார்க்குத் தள்ளும் உயிர்நிலை கள்வார்க்குத்
தள்ளாது புத்தே ளுளகு

One who speaks truth in full agreement with the mind stands above those who combine austerity with giving.

மனத்தொடு வாய்மை மொழியின் தவத்தொடு
தானஞ்செய் வாரின் தலை

There is no renown like freedom from falsehood; without bodily mortification, it brings the fruit of every virtue.

பொய்யாமை அன்ன புகழில்லை எய்யாமை
எல்லா அறமுந் தரும்

If one can practise truthfulness without fail, it is good even if other virtues remain undone.

பொய்யாமை பொய்யாமை ஆற்றின் அறம்பிற
செய்யாமை செய்யாமை நன்று

Water brings cleanliness to the body's exterior; inner purity comes through truthfulness.

புறள்தூய்மை நீரான் அமையும் அகந்தூய்மை
வாய்மையால் காணப் படும்

Among all the works examined as true, there is found nothing of any kind better than truthfulness.

யாமெய்யாக் கண்டவற்றுள் இல்லை எனைத்தொன்றும்
வாய்மையின் நல்ல பிற

Restraint of anger is real when one controls it where it could cause harm; where anger has no power, controlling it proves nothing.

செல்லிடத்துக் காப்பான் சினங்காப்பான் அல்லிடத்துக்
காக்கின்என் காவாக்கால் என்?

Anger where it cannot strike is harmful to the angry person; where it can strike, no evil is worse than using that power in anger.

செல்லா இடத்துச் சினந்தீது செல்லிடத்தும்
இல்அதனின் தீய பிற

Those dominated by furious anger are like the dead; those who have completely renounced anger stand equal to true ascetics.

இறந்தார் இறந்தார் அனையர் சினத்தைத்
துறந்தார் துறந்தார் துணை

Sharing one's food and protecting many kinds of life stands foremost among all virtues gathered by the authors of ethical texts.

பகுத்துண்டு பல்லுயிர் ஓம்புதல் நூலோர்
தொகுத்தவற்றுள் எல்லாந் தலை

Non-killing stands alone as the highest good; after it, truthfulness is good in the next place.

ஒன்றாக நல்லது கொல்லாமை மற்றதன்
பின்சாரப் பொய்யாமை நன்று

Among all who renounced household life from fear of continued birth, foremost is the one who fears the wrong of killing and keeps non-killing in mind.

நிலைஅஞ்சி நீத்தாருள் எல்லாம் கொலைஅஞ்சிக்
கொல்லாமை சூழ்வான் தலை

Great wealth gathers like a crowd at a performance; its departure is like that crowd dispersing when the show ends.

கூத்தாட்டு அவைக்குழாத் தற்றே பெருஞ்செல்வம்
போக்கும் அதுவிளிந் தற்று

The bond between body and life is like a bird flying away while the egg it occupied remains behind alone.

குடம்பை தனித்துஒழியப் புள்பறந் தற்றே
உடம்பொடு உயிரிடை நட்பு

Death is like falling asleep; birth after it is like waking from sleep.

உறங்கு வதுபோலுஞ் சாக்காடு உறங்கி
விழிப்பது போலும் பிறப்பு

Those who have completely renounced have reached the goal; all others, bewildered, are caught in the net.

தலைப்பட்டார் தீரத் துறந்தார் மயங்கி
வலைப்பட்டார் மற்றை யவர்

For those who have left doubt and reached clear realization, the heavenly realm of liberation is nearer than this earthly world.

ஐயத்தின் நீங்கித் தெளிந்தார்க்கு வையத்தின்
வானம் நணிய துடைத்து

There is no excellent wealth here equal to desirelessness; in any other realm too, nothing matches it.

வேண்டாமை அன்ன விழுச்செல்வம் ஈண்டில்லை
ஆண்டும் அஃதொப்பது இல்

Those called free are the ones free from desire; others who have removed other causes have not yet removed this one.

அற்றவர் என்பார் அவாஅற்றார் மற்றையார்
அற்றாக அற்றது இலர்

For those without desire, the suffering caused by it will be absent; if desire remains, that suffering comes on and on without end.

அவாஇல்லார்க் கில்லாகுந் துன்பம் அஃதுண்டேல்
தவாஅது மேன்மேல் வரும்

The destiny that brings gain gives rise to tireless effort; the destiny that brings loss gives rise to idleness.

ஆகூழால் தோன்றும் அசைவின்மை கைப்பொருள்
போகூழால் தோன்றும் மடி

When loss-producing destiny arrives, it makes understanding foolish; when gain-producing destiny arrives, it expands understanding.

முதலிலார்க ஊதிய மில்லை மதலையாஞ்

Abandoning the companionship of the good carries tenfold greater harm than making many enemies.

Greatness is wary of harmful company; pettiness readily gathers it as intimate kin.

சிற்றினம் அஞ்சும் பெருமை சிறுமைதான்
சுற்றமாச் சூழ்ந்து விடும்

As water changes according to the ground it joins, human understanding takes on the character of close association.

நிலத்தியல்பால் நீர்திரிந் தற்றாகும் மாந்தர்க்கு
இனத்தியல்ப தாகும் அறிவு

People's ordinary perception arises through their mind; the description by which they are known arises through their association.

மனத்தானாம் மாந்தர்க் குணர்ச்சி இனத்தானாம்
இன்னான் எனப்படுஞ் சொல்

For the pure-minded, posterity is good; for those whose company is ethically sound, no undertaking fails to become good.

மனந்தூயார்க் கெச்சம்நன் றாகும் இனந்தூயார்க்கு
இல்லைநன் றாகா வினை

Goodness of mind brings flourishing to enduring human life; goodness of company brings every kind of honorable esteem along with it.

மனநலம் மன்னுயிர்க் காக்கம் இனநலம்

No support is greater than sound company, and nothing causes deeper affliction than harmful company.

நல்லினத்தி னூங்குந் துணையில்லை தீயினத்தின்

Ruin comes both from doing what ought not to be done and from failing to do what ought to be done.

In this world, no one has a circle of kin to equal that of one who gives greatly and does not cherish anger.

பெருங்கொடையான் பேணான் வெகுளி அவனின்

A crow does not hide found food; it calls its kind and eats with them. Circle-based prosperity belongs only to people of that sharing nature.

காக்கை கரவா கரைந்துண்ணும் ஆக்கமும்
அன்னநீ ரார்க்கே உள

For a ruler, the forgetful lapse born of excessive delight is worse than anger that has exceeded its limit.

இறந்த வெகுளியின் தீதே சிறந்த
உவகை மகிழ்ச்சியிற் சோர்வு

Forgetful negligence destroys a person's reputation, just as continual destitution destroys learning or practical intelligence.

பொச்சாப்புக் கொல்லும் புகழை அறிவினை
நிச்ச நிரப்புக் கொன்றாங்கு

Just as a fort cannot benefit one whose mind is ruled by fear, no resource benefits one whose mind carries forgetful negligence.

அச்ச முடையார்க்கு அரணில்லை ஆங்கில்லை
பொச்சாப் புடையார்க்கு நன்கு

If a ruler's quality of not forgetting remains without lapse toward everyone at all times, no other good equals it.

A ruler who harasses subjects for wealth and acts unjustly is crueller than those who have made killing their trade.

அல்லவை செய்தொழுகும் வேந்து

A ruler who asks subjects for property while standing behind punitive power resembles a highway robber who raises a spear and says, ‘Give.’

வேலொடு நின்றான் இடுவென் றதுபோலும்
கோலொடு நின்றான் இரவு

Just rule is what makes a ruler's fame endure; without it, royal splendour cannot last.

மன்னர்க்கு மன்னுதல் செங்கோன்மை அஃதின்றேல்

As the absence of rain afflicts living beings across the world, the absence of a ruler's compassionate protection afflicts those who live under his rule.

Under the sceptre of a king who does not uphold justice, possessing wealth is more painful than having none.

The great wealth of one who is hard to approach and unpleasant in countenance has the fault of treasure seen under a demon's guard.

There is no burden upon the earth heavier than a tyrant binding the unlearned to himself as his faction and counsel.

The ways of the world rest in considerate regard; those without it are but a burden upon the earth.

What use is a musical mode if it does not suit the song? What use are eyes that hold no considerate regard?

Those furnished with eyes yet offering no considerate regard are like trees rooted to the earth.

மண்ணோ டியைந்த மரத்தனையர் கண்ணோ

Those without considerate regard are without eyes; among those who truly have eyes, regard cannot be absent.

கண்ணோட்டம் இல்லவர் கண்ணிலர் கண்ணுடையார்
கண்ணோட்டம் இன்மையும் இல்

Possession of inward resolve is the possession that endures; material possession does not remain, but departs.

உள்ளம் உடைமை உடைமை பொருளுடைமை
நில்லாது நீங்கி விடும்

As the water flower's stem reaches according to the depth of standing water, people's elevation corresponds to the measure of their inward resolve.

வெள்ளத் தனைய மலர்நீட்டம் மாந்தர்தம்
உள்ளத் தனையது உயர்வு

People of resolve do not shrink when their intended rise is damaged, as a great elephant maintains its bearing even when wounded by a deeply piercing arrow.

சிதைவிடத்து ஒல்கார் உரவோர் புதையம்பிற்
பட்டுப்பா டூன்றுங் களிறு

Beneficence attempted without persevering capability fails, like a demanding instrument placed in hands not prepared to wield it.

தாளாண்மை இல்லாதான் வேளாண்மை பேடிகை
வாளாண்மை போலக் கெடும்

Effort develops prosperity-producing work; lack of effort lets want enter. This does not make poverty proof of personal failure: opportunity, health, injustice, and disaster also shape outcomes.

முயற்சி திருவினை ஆக்கும் முயற்றின்மை
இன்மை புகுத்தி விடும்

They say the goddess of misfortune dwells with entrenched sloth, while the lotus goddess of prosperity takes her stand at the feet of one free from sloth. These are literary personifications, not judgements about gender, body, colour, birth, poverty, or human worth.

மடியுளாள் மாமுகடி என்ப மடியிலான்
தாளுளான் தாமரையி னாள்

When adversity comes in the course of an undertaking, meet it with inward confidence rather than collapse; nothing equals that composure in pressing the adversity back.

இடுக்கண் வருங்கால் நகுக அதனை
அடுத்தூர்வது அஃதொப்ப தில்

Like a draught ox that draws its cart through every obstructed passage, one who can carry an undertaking onward makes adversity itself struggle for a way.

மடுத்தவா யெல்லாம் பகடன்னான் உற்ற
இடுக்கண் இடர்ப்பாடு உடைத்து

One who enjoys pleasure without inwardly handing the heart over to it does not, amid suffering, become inwardly possessed by suffering.

இன்பத்துள் இன்பம் விழையாதான் துன்பத்துள்
துன்பம் உறுதல் இலன்

One minister beside the ruler who secretly plans harm brings greater danger than an immense multitude of open enemies.

பழுதெண்ணும் மந்திரியின் பக்கததுள் தெவ்வோர்
எழுபது கோடி உறும்

Excellence in fitting speech is not merely one good quality among others; it stands as a distinct and surpassing excellence.

நாநலம் என்னும் நலனுடைமை அந்நலம்
யாநலத்து உள்ளதூஉம் அன்று

Know the capacities of speaker and hearer, then speak fittingly; no virtue or gain surpasses such speech.

திறனறிந்து சொல்லுக சொல்லை அறனும்
பொருளும் அதனினூஉங்கு இல்

Those who cannot express a point in a few faultless words are the very ones who long to say it in many.

பலசொல்லக் காமுறுவர் மன்றமா சற்ற
சிலசொல்லல் தேற்றா தவர்

Those unable to unfold what they learned so another can understand are like clustered blossoms that give no fragrance.

இணருழ்த்தும் நாறா மலரனையர் கற்றது
உணர விரித்துரையா தார்

Good support yields material gain; goodness in action yields every worthy benefit.

துணைநலம் ஆக்கம் த்ருஉம் வினைநலம்

The deep poverty of the worthy is superior to wealth obtained by embracing blame.

பழிமலைந்து எய்திய ஆக்கத்தின் சான்றோர்

All wealth taken through others' tears will depart amid one's own tears; goods of the good kind may be lost first yet bear fruit later.

அழக்கொண்ட எல்லாம் அழப்போம் இழப்பினும்
பிற்பயக்கும் நற்பா லவை

Trying to create security with wealth amassed through wrongful means is like pouring water into an unfired clay pot and expecting it to remain.

சலத்தால் பொருள்செய்தே மார்த்தல் பசுமண்

What is called firmness in action is the firmness of the actor's mind; every other strength is secondary.

When direct action is possible, that is good; when it is not, act by looking for another way through which the undertaking can succeed.

Use one undertaking to bring another undertaking to completion, like binding one elephant by means of another elephant.

யானையால் யானையாத் தற்று

More urgent than doing good to existing allies is winning as allies those who are not joined to the opposing side.

நட்டார்க்கு நல்ல செயலின் விரைந்ததே
ஒட்டாரை ஒட்டிக் கொளல்

The envoy who must present a victory-bearing action among spear-wielding kings should be a master of political learning even among learned ministers.

நூலாருள் நூல்வல்லன் ஆகுதல் வேலாருள்
வென்றி வினையுரைப்பான் பண்பு

Proactively state matters that are both welcome and substantially useful; leave useless matters unsaid even when the ruler asks for them.

வேட்பன சொல்லி வினையில எஞ்ஞான்றும்
கேட்பினும் சொல்லா விடல்

Regard as equal to the divine the person who understands, without uncertainty, what lies within another's mind.

ஐயப் படாஅது அகத்தது உணர்வானைத்
தெய்வத்தோ டொப்பக் கொளல்

Though alike in bodily form, those who grasp an intended thought before it is spoken are different in intelligence from those who cannot.

குறித்தது கூறாமைக் கொள்வாரோ டேனை
உறுப்போ ரனையரால் வேறு

As crystal takes on and shows the colour beside it, the face reveals the feeling that has grown strong in the heart.

அடுத்தது காட்டும் பளிங்குபோல் நெஞ்சம்
கடுத்தது காட்டும் முகம்

Is anything more perceptive than the face? Whether the heart feels delight or aversion, the face shows it first.

முகத்தின் முதுக்குறைந்தது உண்டோ உவப்பினும்
காயினும் தான்முந் துறும்

Among all qualities praised as good, especially good is the restraint not to speak ahead of those senior in learning.

நன்றென்ற வற்றுள்ளும் நன்றே முதுவருள்
முந்து கிளவாச் செறிவு

A lapse of speech before those who grasp vast fields of learning is like losing one's footing and falling from a worthy path.

ஆற்றின் நிலைதளர்ந் தற்றே வியன்புலம்
ஏற்றுணர்வார் முன்னர் இழுக்கு

Speaking before people who possess understanding is like pouring water into the bed of a plant already growing.

உணர்வ துடையார்முன் சொல்லல் வளர்வதன்
பாத்தியுள் நீர்சொரிந் தற்று

Those able to make good teaching enter a worthy assembly should not utter it, even inadvertently, in an assembly unwilling to receive it.

புல்லவையுள் பொச்சாந்தும் சொல்லற்க நல்லவையுள்
நன்குசலச் சொல்லு வார்

Presenting precious discourse before people not prepared to receive it is like spilling nectar in an unclean courtyard.

அங்கணத்துள் உக்க அமிழ்தற்றால் தங்கணத்தார்
அல்லார்முன் கோட்டி கொளல்

Among the learned, those are called truly learned who can make what they have learned reach the understanding of learned hearers.

கற்றாருள் கற்றார் எனப்படுவர் கற்றார்முன்

Many may stand firm even before death in battle; rarer are those who can enter a discerning assembly and speak without fear.

பகையகத்துச் சாவார் எளியர் அரியர்
அவையகத்து அஞ்சா தவர்

What use is a sword to one without the courage to wield it? Likewise, what use are books to one who fears a subtle learned assembly?

வாளொடென் வன்கண்ணர் அல்லார்க்கு நூலொடென்
நுண்ணவை அஞ்சு பவர்க்கு

Learning held by one who fears speaking in an assembly is like a sharp sword held by someone unable to use it amid battle.

பகையகத்துப் பேடிகை ஒள்வாள் அவையகத்து
அஞ்சு மவன்கற்ற நூல்

Those who have learned and understood yet fear the assembly of good people are classically judged below the unlearned, because their learning is not used there.

கல்லா தவரின் கடையென்ப கற்றறிந்தும்
நல்லா ரவையஞ்சு வார்

Though physically present, those who fear the forum and cannot make what they learned reach its hearers are socially as if absent.

உளரெனினும் இல்லாரொடு ஒப்பர் களன்அஞ்சிக்
கற்ற செலச்சொல்லா தார்

Foremost among countries is the land rarely ruined by enemies and whose productive abundance does not diminish even when damage occurs.

கேடறியாக் கெட்ட இடத்தும் வளங்குன்றா
நாடென்ப நாட்டின் தலை

That deserves to be called a country where resources reach residents without painful searching; a land that yields only after exhausting pursuit does not.

A fort is a strategic asset both to those who march out against an enemy and to those who, fearing attack, guard themselves within it.

Friendship among people of sound judgement grows fuller day by day, like the waxing crescent; friendship among the unreflective wanes day by day, like the moon after it is full.

நிறைநீர நீரவர் கேண்மை பிறைமதிப்
பின்னீர பேதையார் நட்பு

As a fine book yields fresh delight each time it is studied, friendship with people of good character grows more rewarding with every closer acquaintance.

நவில்தொறும் நூல்நயம் போலும் பயில்தொறும்
பண்புடை யாளர் தொடர்பு

Friendship that smiles only in the face is not friendship; friendship in which the inner heart truly rejoices through affection is friendship.

முகநக நட்பது நட்பன்று நெஞ்சத்து
அகநக நட்பது நட்பு

As the hand moves at once when a person’s garment slips, friendship goes there and then to remove a friend’s distress.

உடுக்கை இழந்தவன் கைபோல ஆங்கே
இடுக்கண் களைவதாம் நட்பு

No harm compares with forming a friendship without examination; once the bond is made, a person committed to friendship has no easy release.

நாடாது நட்டலிற் கேடில்லை நட்டபின்
வீடில்லை நட்பாள் பவர்க்கு

Cultivate the friendship of those free from blame; if already bound to people whose conduct does not accord with the right way, give even something they seek and leave that friendship.

In prosperity cultivate humility; in adversity maintain unyielding dignity.

Like hair fallen from the head, despised by all, are those who fall from their high station of honor.

தலையின் இழிந்த மயிரனையர் மாந்தர்

Far better is it to be said that one perished on the spot than to live begging behind those who despise him.

The brief poverty of generous benefactors is like a rain cloud temporarily running dry.

சீருடைச் செல்வர் சிறுதுனி மாரி
வறங்கூர்ந் தனையது உடைத்து

True moral shame is shrinking from shameful deeds; all other modesty is mere ordinary shyness.

The base seem luckier than the wise, for no moral conscience ever troubles their mind.

நன்றறி வாரிற் கயவர் திருவுடையர்
நெஞ்சத்து அவலம் இலர்

The base are like the gods in that they do whatever they desire without restraint.

தேவர் அனையர் கயவர் அவருந்தாம்
மேவன செய்தொழுக லான்

The noble help as soon as need is spoken; the base yield only when crushed like sugarcane.

சொல்லப் பயன்படுவர் சான்றோர் கரும்புபோல்

The cloth draped over her breasts is like the face-cloth that curbs a wild elephant's deadly power.

Wine intoxicates only when consumed; unlike love, it brings no joy merely by looking.
