What can physical walls accomplish for protection? A woman's own inner restraint and self-mastery is the foremost guard.

சிறைகாக்கும் காப்பெவன் செய்யும் மகளிர்
நிறைகாக்கும் காப்பே தலை

'The flute is sweet, the lute is sweet,' say only those who have never heard the tender babble of their own little ones.

குழல்இனிது யாழ்இனிது என்பதம் மக்கள்
மழலைச்சொல் கேளா தவர்

A life devoid of love in the inner heart is like a withered tree attempting to sprout upon dry, stony ground.

அன்பகத் தில்லா உயிர்வாழ்க்கை வன்பாற்கண்
வற்றல் மரந்தளிர்த் தற்று

One who sees off departing guests and waits for arriving ones will himself be welcomed as an honored guest by the gods.

செல்விருந்து ஓம்பி வருவிருந்து பார்த்திருப்பான்
நல்வருந்து வானத் தவர்க்கு

To possess plenty yet neglect hospitality is utter poverty in the midst of wealth; such folly belongs only to the senseless.

உடைமையுள் இன்மை விருந்தோம்பல் ஓம்பா
மடமை மடவார்கண் உண்டு

What is owed for a help is not set by the size of the help, but by the worth of the one who received it.

Austerity itself succeeds only for those already formed by austerity; for those without that preparation, taking it up is futile.

Even mastery of the five forms of sensory perception brings no lasting fruit to those without realization of ultimate truth.

If one must desire, desire freedom from birth; that freedom comes when one desires freedom from desire itself.

வேண்டுங்கால் வேண்டும் பிறவாமை மற்றது
வேண்டாமை வேண்ட வரும்

If one removes desire, whose nature is never to be filled, that very state gives a nature that never departs from stability.

ஆரா இயற்கை அவாநீப்பின் அந்நிலையே
பேரா இயற்கை தரும்

Though one studies many subtle books, one's destiny-shaped underlying understanding will still prevail.

நுண்ணிய நூல்பல கற்பினும் மற்றுந்தன்
உண்மை யறிவே மிகும்

For making wealth, all good things can turn harmful, and harmful things can turn helpful, under destiny's power.

நல்லவை எல்லாஅந் தீயவாம் தீயவும்
நல்லவாம் செல்வம் செயற்கு

What is not allotted to one will not remain despite careful guarding; what is one's own by allotment will not leave even if carried out and scattered.

பரியினும் ஆகாவாம் பாலல்ல உய்த்துச்
சொரியினும் போகா தம

Those without means for enjoyment would indeed renounce, if destinies passed without inflicting the sufferings allotted to them.

துறப்பார்மன் துப்புர வில்லார் உறற்பால
ஊட்டா கழியு மெனின்

Those who accept events as good when good fortune comes—why do they suffer when fortune comes otherwise?

நன்றாங்கால் நல்லவாக் காண்பவர் அன்றாங்கால்
அல்லற் படுவ தெவன்?

Even those without learning may appear very good if they can remain silent before learned people.

கல்லா தவரும் நனிநல்லர் கற்றார்முன்
சொல்லா திருக்கப் பெறின்

Though born in high station, the unlearned do not possess the honour belonging to the learned born in humble circumstances.

மேற்பிறந்தா ராயினும் கல்லாதார் கீழ்ப்பிறந்தும்
கற்றார் அனைத்திலர் பாடு

Ears not opened and refined by wise learning remain as though deaf, even while registering physical sound.

கேட்பினுங் கேளாத் தகையவே கேள்வியால்
தோட்கப் படாத செவி

A ruler without people who can rebuke, and therefore without protection, will perish even when no enemy seeks that ruin.

இடிப்பாரை இல்லாத ஏமரா மன்னன்
கெடுப்பா ரிலானுங் கெடும்

Understanding appears to reside in one's own mind, yet it is truly formed within the company one keeps.

மனத்து ளதுபோலக் காட்டி ஒருவற்கு
இனத்துள தாகும் அறிவு

Even in doing good there is error if one does not understand each person's disposition and act in a way fitted to it.

நன்றாற்ற லுள்ளுந் தவுறுண்டு அவரவர்
பண்பறிந் தாற்றாக் கடை

In deep water the crocodile defeats other creatures; if it leaves the waters in which it prevails, other creatures defeat it.

நெடும்புனலுள் வெல்லும் முதலை அடும்புனலின்
நீங்கின் அதனைப் பிற

If the ruler with a great army enters the ground reached by the ruler with a small army, the greater army's confidence will perish.

சிறுபடையான் செல்லிடம் சேரின் உறுபடையான்
ஊக்கம் அழிந்து விடும்

Even if people lack the defensive strength and distinction of a fort, it is difficult to attack them on the land where they live.

சிறைநலனும் சீரும் இலரெனினும் மாந்தர்
உறைநிலத்தோடு ஒட்டல் அரிது

A jackal will kill the fearless-eyed elephant whose tusks have pierced spear-bearing fighters, if the elephant stands in ground where its feet sink.

காலாழ் களரில் நரியடும் கண்ணஞ்சா
வேலாள் முகத்த களிறு

Even among those who have mastered rare learning and are free from fault, close examination rarely finds a complete absence of ignorance.

அரியகற்று ஆசற்றார் கண்ணும் தெரியுங்கால்
இன்மை அரிதே வெளிறு

Even after people have been examined in every way and trusted, many become different because of the particular nature of the work.

எனைவகையான் தேறியக் கண்ணும் வினைவகையான்
வேறாகும் மாந்தர் பலர்

Fortune leaves the ruler who, swayed by resentful voices, misreads the work-earned familiarity of one continually diligent in duty as something improper.

வினைக்கண் வினையுடையான் கேண்மைவே றாக
நினைப்பானை நீங்கும் திரு

It is not the spear that gives a king victory, but his sceptre—and that only if the sceptre does not bend from justice.

வேலன்று வென்றி தருவது மன்னவன்
கோலதூஉங் கோடா தெனின்

Though easy to approach, a ruler who fails to investigate and decide according to established truth will bring about his own fall from his low position.

எண்பதத்தான் ஓரா முறைசெய்யா மன்னவன்
தண்பதத்தான் தானே கெடும்

Protecting and preserving the people from harm, and punishing an established offence, is not a blemish upon a ruler; it is his duty.

குடிபுறங் காத்தோம்பிக் குற்றம் கடிதல்
வடுவன்று வேந்தன் தொழில்

Under the sceptre of a king who does not uphold justice, possessing wealth is more painful than having none.

இன்மையின் இன்னாது உடைமை முறைசெய்யா
மன்னவன் கோற்கீழ்ப் படின்

Do not honour a spy in a way others can know; if the ruler does so, he himself makes the secret public.

சிறப்பறிய ஒற்றின்கண் செய்யற்க செய்யின்
புறப்படுத்தான் ஆகும் மறை

Though the elephant is huge and armed with sharp tusks, it fears when a tiger attacks.

பரியது கூர்ங்கோட்டது ஆயினும் யானை
வெரூஉம் புலிதாக் குறின்

Even when the wealth or favour of the ruler of the whole land comes to them, people ruled by sloth rarely obtain its worthy benefit.

படியுடையார் பற்றமைந்தக் கண்ணும் மடியுடையார்
மாண்பயன் எய்தல் அரிது

Lack of favourable endowment or fortune is blame to no one. The blame lies in knowing the action required and making no effort when it is genuinely possible.

பொறியின்மை யார்க்கும் பழியன்று அறிவறிந்து
ஆள்வினை இன்மை பழி

Those who do not surrender to grief when adversity interrupts their work put adversity itself under strain until its hold weakens.

இடும்பைக்கு இடும்பை படுப்பர் இடும்பைக்கு
இடும்பை படாஅ தவர்

Even when adversities arrive one upon another, they themselves are worn down against a person whose inner purpose does not disintegrate.

அடுக்கி வரினும் அழிவிலான் உற்ற
இடுக்கண் இடுக்கட் படும்

When one receives the necessary hardship of worthy effort as part of its joy, a distinction arises that even rivals are moved to respect.

இன்னாமை இன்பம் எனக்கொளின் ஆகுந்தன்
ஒன்னார் விழையுஞ் சிறப்பு

Even after learning formal methods, act with an understanding of how the world is actually operating now.

செயற்கை அறிந்தக் கடைத்தும் உலகத்து
இயற்கை அறிந்து செயல்

Those who lack the practical capacity to finish leave work incomplete even after planning it properly and in order.

முறைப்படச் சூழ்ந்தும் முடிவிலவே செய்வர்
திறப்பாடு இலாஅ தவர்

Those who cannot express a point in a few faultless words are the very ones who long to say it in many.

பலசொல்லக் காமுறுவர் மன்றமா சற்ற
சிலசொல்லல் தேற்றா தவர்

To those who knowingly do what moral teaching condemns, those very deeds bring suffering even if they first succeed.

கடிந்த கடிந்தொரார் செய்தார்க்கு அவைதாம்
முடிந்தாலும் பீழை தரும்

It is easy for anyone to say how a thing will be done; doing it in the manner promised is difficult.

சொல்லுதல் யார்க்கும் எளிய அரியவாம்
சொல்லிய வண்ணம் செயல்

Even when someone possesses every other strength, the discerning do not esteem for high responsibility one who rejects firmness in action.

எனைத்திட்பம் எய்தியக் கண்ணும் வினைத்திட்பம்
வேண்டாரை வேண்டாது உலகு

People of unwavering judgment do not think royal favour permits them to do what the ruler rejects.

கொளப்பட்டேம் என்றெண்ணிக் கொள்ளாத செய்யார்
துளக்கற்ற காட்சி யவர்

Though alike in bodily form, those who grasp an intended thought before it is spoken are different in intelligence from those who cannot.

குறித்தது கூறாமைக் கொள்வாரோ டேனை
உறுப்போ ரனையரால் வேறு

Many may stand firm even before death in battle; rarer are those who can enter a discerning assembly and speak without fear.

பகையகத்துச் சாவார் எளியர் அரியர்
அவையகத்து அஞ்சா தவர்

Though physically present, those who fear the forum and cannot make what they learned reach its hearers are socially as if absent.

உளரெனினும் இல்லாரொடு ஒப்பர் களன்அஞ்சிக்
கற்ற செலச்சொல்லா தார்

Even when it possesses all the preceding excellences, a country gains no benefit if concord with its ruler is absent.

ஆங்கமை வெய்தியக் கண்ணும் பயமின்றே
வேந்தமை வில்லாத நாடு

A fort has only a small perimeter to guard, encloses ample space, and breaks the fighting resolve of the formidable enemy besieging it.

சிறுகாப்பிற் பேரிடத்த தாகி உறுபகை
ஊக்கம் அழிப்ப தரண்

Even when a fort possesses every excellence, it is effectively no fort for defenders who lack excellence in action.

எனைமாட்சித் தாகியக் கண்ணும் வினைமாட்சி
இல்லார்கண் இல்லது அரண்

Even without offensive courage or defensive endurance, an army may gain prestige through its imposing appearance.

அடல்தகையும் ஆற்றலும் இல்லெனினும் தானை
படைத்தகையால் பாடு பெறும்

Even if steady soldiers are abundant, there is no functioning army when capable commanders are absent.

நிலைமக்கள் சால உடைத்தெனினும் தானை
தலைமக்கள் இல்வழி இல்

Fearless attack is called great martial valour; when a setback befalls the enemy, magnanimously helping them is that valour's sharper edge.

பேராண்மை என்ப தறுகண்ஒன் றுற்றக்கால்
ஊராண்மை மற்றதன் எஃகு

Taking stock of his days, the warrior places every day without an honourable battle wound among those he counts as wasted.

விழுப்புண் படாதநாள் எல்லாம் வழுக்கினுள்
வைக்கும்தன் நாளை எடுத்து

Friendship is not formed merely for shared laughter; it exists also to step forward and firmly reprove a friend when that friend goes too far in harmful conduct.

நகுதற் பொருட்டன்று நட்டல் மிகுதிக்கண்
மேற்செனறு இடித்தற் பொருட்டு

Meeting in person and long familiarity are not required; shared inward understanding alone can confer the close relational standing of friendship.

புணர்ச்சி பழகுதல் வேண்டா உணர்ச்சிதான்
நட்பாங் கிழமை தரும்

Even when people adorn it by saying, “This person is thus much to us, and we are thus much to them,” friendship spoken of in such measures appears mean.

இனையர் இவரெமக்கு இன்னம்யாம் என்று
புனையினும் புல்லென்னும் நட்பு

Even adversity holds one benefit: it is a measuring rod that reveals the full measure of one’s associates.

கேட்டினும் உண்டோர் உறுதி கிளைஞரை
நீட்டி அளப்பதோர் கோல்

The gain said to belong to a person is this: leaving behind friendship with those who persist in foolish conduct.

ஊதியம் என்பது ஒருவற்குப் பேதையார்
கேண்மை ஒரீஇ விடல்

For one skilled in the familiar liberty of friendship, who does not accept reports of a friend’s fault uncritically, the day an old friend actually errs becomes a useful day for truth and repair.

கேளிழுக்கம் கேளாக் கெழுதகைமை வல்லார்க்கு
நாளிழுக்கம் நட்டார் செயின்

Even those who did not desire them will seek people who do not depart from their own good character toward old friends.

விழையார் விழையப் படுப பழையார்கண்
பண்பின் தலைப்பிரியா தார்

Guard against even slight closeness with those who treat you as a friend in private but disparage you before others.

எனைத்தும் குறுகுதல் ஓம்பல் மனைக்கெழீஇ
மன்றில் பழிப்பார் தொடர்பு

The friendship of those who seem like one’s own but are not truly so changes when opportunity appears—an idea the verse compares, through an unacceptable historical stereotype, to women’s minds.

இனம்போன்று இனமல்லார் கேண்மை மகளிர்
மனம்போல வேறு படும்

Even after learning many good teachings, those who continue to choose hostility rarely become good-hearted through learning alone.

பலநல்ல கற்றக் கடைத்து மனநல்லர்
ஆகுதல் மாணார்க் கரிது

Even when an opponent speaks helpful words like a friend, what those words truly serve soon becomes clear.

நட்டார்போல் நல்லவை சொல்லினும் ஒட்டார்சொல்
ஒல்லை உணரப் படும்

A weapon may lie hidden even within an enemy’s supplicating hands; their tears may conceal the same.

தொழுதகை யுள்ளும் படையொடுங்கும் ஒன்னார்
அழுதகண் ணீரும் அனைத்து

When a foolish person comes into great wealth, unrelated people eat their fill while those bound to that person go hungry.

ஏதிலார் ஆரத் தமர்பசிப்பர் பேதை
பெருஞ்செல்வம் உற்றக் கடை

The friendship of people who act without good judgment is ‘very pleasant’ in this ironic sense: when it ends, the separation causes no pain.

பெரிதினிது பேதையார் கேண்மை பிரிவின்கண்
பீழை தருவதொன் றில்

If one lacking sound understanding gives with an open heart, it is purely the good fortune and merit of the recipient.

அறிவிலான் நெஞ்சுவந்து ஈதல் பிறிதியாதும்
இல்லை பெறுவான் தவம்

The suffering that people of shallow understanding inflict upon themselves is difficult even for their worst enemies to cause.

அறிவிலார் தாந்தம்மைப் பீழிக்கும் பீழை
செறுவார்க்கும் செய்தல் அரிது

Pretending mastery over what one has not learned casts doubt even upon the subjects one has truly mastered.

கல்லாத மேற்கொண் டொழுகல் கசடற
வல்லதூஉம் ஐயம் தரும்

One who tries to enlighten an unreceptive person is dismissed as unseeing; the unreceptive person counts only his own flawed vision as truth.

காணாதான் காட்டுவான் தான்காணான் காணாதான்
கண்டானாம் தான்கண்ட வாறு

When gain is on its way, one overlooks hostility; when bringing ruin upon oneself, one seeks to magnify it.

இகல்காணான் ஆக்கம் வருங்கால் அதனை
மிகல்காணும் கேடு தரற்கு

Renown will never attach to one who refuses the easy gain available in opposing an unlearned and angry adversary.

கல்லான் வெகுளும் சிறுபொருள் எஞ்ஞான்றும்
ஒல்லானை ஒல்லா தொளி

The world rests within the greatness of the ruler whose character can turn enmity into friendship.

பகைநட்பாக் கொண்டொழுகும் பண்புடை யாளன்
தகைமைக்கண் தங்கிற்று உலகு

Though it may appear joined like a metal container fitted with its lid, a household possessed by internal enmity is not truly united.

செப்பின் புணர்ச்சிபோல் கூடினும் கூடாதே
உட்பகை உற்ற குடி

If one wishes for ruin, let him act without listening to wise counsel by offending those who have the power to destroy.

கெடல்வேண்டின் கேளாது செய்க அடல்வேண்டின்
ஆற்று பவர்கண் இழுக்கு

Though they live in heavenly splendor, those who cower before their wives possess no true dignity.

இமையாரின் வாழினும் பாடிலரே இல்லாள்
அமையார்தோள் அஞ்சு பவர்

Greater is the dignity of a woman adorned with modesty than the manhood of one who slavishly obeys his wife's dictates.

பெண்ணேவல் செய்தொழுகும் ஆண்மையின் நாணுடைப்
பெண்ணே பெருமை உடைத்து

Those whose minds are anchored in thoughtful deliberation and broad vision will never succumb to foolish infatuation.

எண்சேர்ந்த நெஞ்சத் திடனுடையார்க்கு எஞ்ஞான்றும்
பெண்சேர்ந்தாம் பேதைமை இல்

The sweet words of women who desire wealth rather than love bring only disgrace.

அன்பின் விழையார் பொருள்விழையும் ஆய்தொடியார்
இன்சொல் இழுக்குத் தரும்

Spending money to purchase self-oblivion is the height of foolish ignorance.

கையறி யாமை உடைத்தே பொருள்கொடுத்து
மெய்யறி யாமை கொளல்

Those who drink secretly and reel with clouded eyes will be exposed and mocked by their own townsfolk.

உள்ளொற்றி உள்ளூர் நகப்படுவர் எஞ்ஞான்றும்
கள்ளொற்றிக் கண்சாய் பவர்

Drop the claim 'I was never drunk'; for secret thoughts hidden in the heart spill out in intoxication.

இவறியார் இல்லாகி யார்

Even when their capacity to give diminishes through poverty, an ancient noble house never parts with its virtues.

வழங்குவ துள்வீழ்ந்தக் கண்ணும் பழங்குடி
பண்பில் தலைப்பிரிதல் இன்று

Those who seek renown with steadfast honor will never stoop to unworthy deeds, even for fame.

சீரினும் சீரல்ல செய்யாரே சீரொடு
பேராண்மை வேண்டு பவர்

The ignoble are never great though placed on high; the noble are never base though living in humble station.

மேலிருந்தும் மேலல்லார் மேலல்லர் கீழிருந்தும்
கீழல்லார் கீழல் லவர்

In the minds of the small, there is never the noble thought to revere and learn from the great.

சிறியார் உணர்ச்சியுள் இல்லை பெரியாரைப்

Those raising a family cannot wait for opportune times; indulging sloth and pride only ruins the home.

குடிசெய்வார்க் கில்லை பருவம் மடிசெய்து
மானங் கருதக் கெடும்

Mother Earth laughs in scorn at those who sit idle, complaining that they have nothing.

இலமென்று அசைஇ இருப்பாரைக் காணின்
நிலமென்னும் நல்லாள் நகும்

Though the poor speak profound wisdom with clarity, their words fall on deaf ears.

நற்பொருள் நன்குணர்ந்து சொல்லினும் நல்கூர்ந்தார்
சொற்பொருள் சோர்வு படும்

If none came seeking aid, what honor or renown could givers ever attain?

ஈவார்கண் என்னுண்டாம் தோற்றம் இரந்துகோள்
மேவார் இலாஅக் கடை

A beggar's life departs at the word of refusal; where does the soul of the refuser hide?

கரப்பவர்க்கு யாங்கொளிக்கும் கொல்லோ இரப்பவர்
சொல்லாடப் போஒம் உயிர்

In outward appearance, the base resemble noble humans; no two opposites share such exact resemblance.

மக்களே போல்வர் கயவர் அவரன்ன
ஒப்பாரி யாங்கண்ட தில்

The base seem luckier than the wise, for no moral conscience ever troubles their mind.

நன்றறி வாரிற் கயவர் திருவுடையர்
நெஞ்சத்து அவலம் இலர்

The base will not flick water off their hand for beggars; they give only to a threatening fist.

ஈர்ங்கை விதிரார் கயவர் கொடிறுடைக்கும்
கூன்கையர் அல்லா தவர்க்கு

I had only heard of Death before, but now I know it: it has a woman's form and warring eyes.

பண்டறியேன் கூற்றென் பதனை இனியறிந்தேன்
பெண்டகையால் பேரமர்க் கட்டு

The eyes of this gentle maiden seem drawn for battle, devouring the lives of all who look.

Love neither respects a woman's reserve nor pities her; it exposes itself in the public square.

நிறையரியர் மன்அளியர் என்னாது காமம்
மறையிறந்து மன்று படும்

Thinking no one knows my hidden pain, my love now wanders bewildered through the streets.

அறிகிலார் எல்லாரும் என்றேஎன் காமம்
மறுகின் மறுகும் மருண்டு

The town's rumour sustains my fading life; by good fortune, the gossips do not know it.

அலரெழ ஆருயிர் நிற்கும் அதனைப்
பலரறியார் பாக்கியத் தால்

Not knowing how hard she is to win, the town kindly links her name with mine.

மலரன்ன கண்ணாள் அருமை அறியாது
அலரெமக்கு ஈந்ததிவ் வூர்

When he who promised never to leave has gone, why should I fear the chatter of strangers?

அலர்நாண ஒல்வதோ அஞ்சலோம்பு என்றார்
பலர்நாண நீத்தக் கடை

The town gave me the very scandal I wanted; now my beloved will gladly take my hand.

தாம்வேண்டின் நல்குவர் காதலர் யாம்வேண்டும்
கெளவை எடுக்கும்இவ் வூர்

There was a time when his simply looking at me held sweetness in it. Now the holding itself has a dimness in it, because inside it sits the fear that he will leave.

I do keep this sickness hidden, for all the good it does. It only rises higher, the way the water in a spring rises for the people who keep baling it out.

மறைப்பேன்மன் யானிஃதோ நோயை இறைப்பவர்க்கு
ஊற்றுநீர் போல மிகும்

I have not the strength left to hide this sickness. And telling it to the man who caused it brings its own restraint down on me. Both doors are shut.

They themselves showed him to me, and that is the whole of how I came to know this grief that will not cool. What are these eyes weeping for now?

கண்தாம் கலுழ்வ தெவன்கொலோ தண்டாநோய்
தாம்காட்ட யாம்கண் டது

All at once, of themselves, they looked; and now, again of themselves, they sit and weep. There is something in this fit to be laughed at.

கதுமெனத் தாநோக்கித் தாமே கலுழும்
இதுநகத் தக்க துடைத்து

Oh, but this is sweet — the very eyes that made this grief for me have now fallen into it themselves.

ஓஒ இனிதே எமக்கிந்நோய் செய்தகண்
தாஅம் இதற்பட் டது

There is a man who wanted me with his words and never cherished me in his heart. And what of it — without the sight of him my eyes will not settle.

பேணாது பெட்டார் உளர்மன்னோ மற்றவர்க்
காணாது அமைவில கண்

When he does not come they do not sleep, watching the road for him; when he comes they do not sleep, dreading the parting. Either way my eyes have taken a grief past bearing.

நயந்தவர்க்கு நல்காமை நேர்ந்தேன் பசந்தவென்
பண்பியார்க்கு உரைக்கோ பிற

It carries the standing of a thing he himself gave — and on the strength of that, this pallor has climbed my body and rides it.

அவர்தந்தார் என்னும் தகையால் இவர்தந்தென்
மேனிமேல் ஊரும் பசப்பு

My grace and my modesty he took with him when he went — and in exchange he gave me this sickness and this pallor.

சாயலும் நாணும் அவர்கொண்டார் கைம்மாறா
நோயும் பசலையும் தந்து

In my mind I hold nothing but him; on my tongue there is nothing but his good. And still the pallor came. It is a cheat — or what else would you call it?

உள்ளுவன் மன்யான் உரைப்பது அவர்திறமால்
கள்ளம் பிறவோ பசப்பு

That she has gone pale — that is all anyone says. There is not one person who says that he was the one who left her.

பசந்தாள் இவள்என்பது அல்லால் இவளைத்
துறந்தார் அவர்என்பார் இல்

Then let my body go on losing its colour, exactly as it has. It is enough for me if the one who talked me into agreeing is held to stand well.

பசக்கமன் பட்டாங்கென் மேனி நயப்பித்தார்
நன்னிலையர் ஆவர் எனின்

If they will not go about saying that the man who won my consent has withheld his grace, then to be given the name 'pallor' is good enough for me.

பசப்பெனப் பேர்பெறுதல் நன்றே நயப்பித்தார்
நல்காமை தூற்றார் எனின்

Even a woman whom everyone holds dear is without the one closeness that counts, if the man she loves does not love her.

வீழப் படுவார் கெழீஇயிலர் தாம்வீழ்வார்
வீழப் படாஅர் எனின்

Not one kind word reaches them from the person they love, and still they go on living. There is nobody in this world harder-hearted than they are.

வீழ்வாரின் இன்சொல் பெறாஅது உலகத்து
வாழ்வாரின் வன்கணார் இல்

Though the man I long for grants me no kindness, any word at all that is spoken about him is sweet to my ear.

நசைஇயார் நல்கார் எனினும் அவர்மாட்டு
இசையும் இனிய செவிக்கு

In my heart he is there, always, without a doubt. But am I there in his heart at all — am I even present in him?

யாமும் உளேங்கொல் அவர்நெஞ்சத்து எந்நெஞ்சத்து
ஓஒ உளரே அவர்

He has shut me out of his own heart, keeping guard so I cannot enter. Has he no shame, then, coming into mine without a pause?

தம்நெஞ்சத்து எம்மைக் கடிகொண்டார் நாணார்கொல்
எம்நெஞ்சத்து ஓவா வரல்

I have never learned to forget — and even remembering, my heart burns. If I did forget, what would become of me?

மறப்பின் எவனாவன் மற்கொல் மறப்பறியேன்
உள்ளினும் உள்ளம் சுடும்

However much I think of him, he is never angry at it. Is that not the whole favour my beloved grants me?

எனைத்து நினைப்பினும் காயார் அனைத்தன்றோ
காதலர் செய்யும் சிறப்பு

He used to say, 'We are not two.' Dwelling long on the tenderness now gone from him, my sweet life ebbs away.

விளியுமென் இன்னுயிர் வேறல்லம் என்பார்
அளியின்மை ஆற்ற நினைந்து

If only these carp-like, kohl-dark eyes would sleep when I beg them, I would tell him myself, in full, how I still hold on to life.

கயலுண்கண் யானிரப்பத் துஞ்சிற் கலந்தார்க்கு
உயலுண்மை சாற்றுவேன் மன்

The cruel man grants me nothing in my waking hours — by what right does he come and torment me in my dreams?

நனவினால் நல்காக் கொடியார் கனவனால்
என்எம்மைப் பீழிப் பது

It is those who never meet their lover in dream who reproach him for not coming to them in waking.

காதலர்க் காணா தவர்

This town says he has left me and gone. Can it be that they do not see him — the way he comes to me, unfailing, in my dreams?

நனவினால் நம்நீத்தார் என்பர் கனவினால்
காணார்கொல் இவ்வூ ரவர்

The evening that once came budding with dew and paling as it came now comes with loathing in bud, and grief growing larger the longer it stays.

பனிஅரும்பிப் பைதல்கொள் மாலை துனிஅரும்பித்
துன்பம் வளர வரும்

In all the time before the man I married went away, I never knew that evening could inflict pain.

மாலைநோய் செய்தல் மணந்தார் அகலாத
காலை அறிந்த திலேன்

Remembering the man who went far away and left this misery here with us, your eyes have lost their light, and now they stand ashamed before the fragrant flowers that once stood ashamed before them.

சிறுமை நமக்கொழியச் சேட்சென்றார் உள்ளி
நறுமலர் நாணின கண்

That my shoulders slacken and the bangles go with them, I bear. What I grieve at, and grieve at inwardly, is hearing you call him cruel for it.

தொடியொடு தோள்நெகிழ நோவல் அவரைக்
கொடியர் எனக்கூறல் நொந்து

Will it win you any standing, my heart, to carry the noise of my wasting arm to the people who already call him cruel?

பாடு பெறுதியோ நெஞ்சே கொடியார்க்கென்
வாடுதோட் பூசல் உரைத்து

Was it only the eyes that lost their colour? That pallor came to grief itself, at the sight of what the bright forehead beside it had gone and done.

கண்ணின் பசப்போ பருவரல் எய்தின்றே
ஒண்ணுதல் செய்தது கண்டு

My heart, in front of the man who settles a quarrel by drawing you close you cannot hold a sulk at all — so this heat you are burning with now is a heat you do not have.

கலந்துணர்த்தும் காதலர்க் கண்டாற் புலந்துணராய்
பொய்க்காய்வு காய்திஎன் நெஞ்சு

You ache that he has not come back out of pity, and then you set off after the very man who chose to part: you know nothing, my heart.

பரிந்தவர் நல்காரென்று ஏங்கிப் பிரிந்தவர்
பின்செல்வாய் பேதைஎன் நெஞ்சு

The one you love is inside you, my heart — so whose side is it that you keep setting out for?

பெரிதாற்றிப் பெட்பக் கலத்தல் அரிதாற்றி
அன்பின்மை சூழ்வ துடைத்து

The man of the cool, lovely shore had parted from me in mind while his body was still beside me; and my bangles knew it earlier than I did.

தண்ணந் துறைவன் தணந்தமை நம்மினும்
முன்னம் உணர்ந்த வளை

Though he gives me no regard and does only what he himself wants, my eyes will not settle until they have seen him.

பேணாது பெட்பவே செய்யினும் கொண்கனைக்
காணா தமையல கண்

My friend, I did set out meaning to sulk with him. My heart forgot all that and went straight to being with him.

Like the eye which has seen the kohl-stick often enough and yet cannot make it out at the moment it is being drawn along the lid — I have seen my lord's fault in every place where he was not, and where I see him, I see none.

எழுதுங்கால் கோல்காணாக் கண்ணேபோல் கொண்கன்
பழிகாணேன் கண்ட இடத்து

When I see him, I do not see the things in him that are faults. When I do not see him, I do not see the things that are not faults.

காணுங்கால் காணேன் தவறாய காணாக்கால்
காணேன் தவறல் லவை

Though it works degradation and harm on the very people it has elated, palm wine is only wanted the more. Deceiver, your chest is that to me.

இளித்தக்க இன்னா செயினும் களித்தார்க்குக்
கள்ளற்றே கள்வநின் மார்பு

With her eyes she sulked at me, and no further than her eyes; then, in more of a hurry for the embrace than I was myself, she was shaken out of even that.

When I sneezed she blessed me, out of her own nature; then she wiped out her own blessing and wept — 'Which one of them was thinking of you, that you sneezed?'

There is no fault in him — and even so, sulking has the power to bring out the very way he shows me his tenderness.

இல்லை தவறவர்க்கு ஆயினும் ஊடுதல்
வல்லது அவர்அளிக்கு மாறு

Within that sulk — she has him in her arms, and the sulk itself is why he does not leave — there lies a weapon — and the thing it breaks is the resolve I had set on sulking.

புல்லி விடாஅப் புலவியுள் தோன்றுமென்
உள்ளம் உடைக்கும் படை

In a lovers' sulk the one who loses is the one who has won; and that is a thing seen in the coming together afterwards.
