Those who continuously dwell at the glorious feet of the Divine who indwells the heart live enduringly in the realm of truth.

மலர்மிசை ஏகினான் மாணடி சேர்ந்தார்
நிலமிசை நீடுவாழ் வார்

For those who reach the feet of the Divine who has neither desire nor aversion, sorrow never attaches at any time.

வேண்டுதல் வேண்டாமை இலானடி சேர்ந்தார்க்கு
யாண்டும் இடும்பை இல

The twin entanglements born of delusion never attach to those who dwell in the genuine praise of the Divine.

இருள்சேர் இருவினையும் சேரா இறைவன்
பொருள்சேர் புகழ்புரிந்தார் மாட்டு

Those who stand steadfast in the truthful moral path of the One who mastered the five senses live enduringly in wholeness.

பொறிவாயில் ஐந்தவித்தான் பொய்தீர் ஒழுக்க
நெறிநின்றார் நீடுவாழ் வார்

If the clouds fail to yield rain, relentless hunger will torment all life, even on this vast earth girdled by the ocean.

விண்இன்று பொய்ப்பின் விரிநீர் வியனுலகத்து
உள்நின்று உடற்றும் பசி

If the abundance that clouds pour down begins to fail, farmers will set aside their ploughs.

ஏரின் உழாஅர் உழவர் புயல்என்னும்
வாரி வளங்குன்றிக் கால்

If the heavens turn dry, neither grand festivals nor sacred offerings will continue on this earth.

சிறப்பொடு பூசனை செல்லாது வானம்
வறக்குமேல் வானோர்க்கும் ஈண்டு

Neither compassionate giving nor disciplined contemplation can survive on this earth if the sky withholds its rain.

தானம் தவம்இரண்டும் தங்கா வியன்உலகம்
வானம் வழங்கா தெனின்

The true nature of the world endures within the deep comprehension of the sage who discerns the five senses: taste, sight, touch, sound, and smell.

சுவைஒளி ஊறுஓசை நாற்றமென ஐந்தின்
வகைதெரிவான் கட்டே உலகு

If a life is lived fearing dishonor and sharing meals with others, its noble lineage will never fail through time.

பழியஞ்சிப் பாத்தூண் உடைத்தாயின் வாழ்க்கை
வழியெஞ்சல் எஞ்ஞான்றும் இல்

One who lives domestic life on earth as it truly should be lived will be placed among the gods dwelling in the heavens.

வையத்துள் வாழ்வாங்கு வாழ்பவன் வான்உறையும்
தெய்வத்துள் வைக்கப் படும்

If women win the grace of cherishing their life partners with devotion, they shall win supreme honor in the world where the gods dwell.

பெற்றாற் பெறின்பெறுவர் பெண்டிர் பெருஞ்சிறப்புப்
புத்தேளிர் வாழும் உலகு

Those whose homes lack a companion who cherishes honor cannot walk with the proud stride of a lion before those who despise them.

புகழ்புரிந்த இல்லிலோர்க்கு இல்லை இகழ்வார்முன்
ஏறுபோல் பீடு நடை

If one is blessed with children of spotless character who bring no blame, evils will never touch them across any lifetime.

எழுபிறப்பும் தீயவை தீண்டா பழிபிறங்காப்
பண்புடை மக்கட் பெறின்

That one's children possess greater wisdom than oneself brings delight not merely to the parents, but to every living soul on earth.

தம்மின்தம் மக்கள் அறிவுடைமை மாநிலத்து
மன்னுயிர்க் கெல்லாம் இனிது

The greatest service a child can render a father is to live so nobly that the world exclaims, 'What great penance must his father have performed!'

மகன்தந்தைக்கு ஆற்றும் உதவி இவன்தந்தை
என்நோற்றான் கொல்லெனும் சொல்

Love generates deep affection for all, and that affection begets the boundless treasure of true friendship.

அன்புஈனும் ஆர்வம் உடைமை அதுஈனும்
நண்பென்னும் நாடாச் சிறப்பு

The blessed distinction enjoyed by those who live happily in this world is the fruit of a life harmoniously rooted in love.

அன்புற்று அமர்ந்த வழக்கென்ப வையகத்து
இன்புற்றார் எய்தும் சிறப்பு

The life of one who hospitably honors guests each day will never suffer misery or fall into ruin.

வருவிருந்து வைகலும் ஓம்புவான் வாழ்க்கை
பருவந்து பாழ்படுதல் இன்று

The goddess of fortune delights to dwell in the home of one who welcomes guests with an open heart and a beaming smile.

அகனமர்ந்து செய்யாள் உறையும் முகனமர்ந்து
நல்விருந்து ஓம்புவான் இல்

One who sees off departing guests and waits for arriving ones will himself be welcomed as an honored guest by the gods.

செல்விருந்து ஓம்பி வருவிருந்து பார்த்திருப்பான்
நல்வருந்து வானத் தவர்க்கு

Those who neglect the sacred duty of hospitality will mourn, 'We painfully hoarded our wealth, yet now find ourselves without support and in ruin!'

பரிந்தோம்பிப் பற்றற்றேம் என்பர் விருந்தோம்பி
வேள்வி தலைப்படா தார்

Sorrowful destitution will never touch those who speak pleasant, joy-bringing words to all people.

துன்புறூஉம் துவ்வாமை இல்லாகும் யார்மாட்டும்
இன்புறூஉம் இன்சொ லவர்க்கு

If one seeks the good of others and speaks pleasant words, sins will wither away and righteous virtue will flourish.

அல்லவை தேய அறம்பெருகும் நல்லவை
நாடி இனிய சொலின்

Words that confer useful benefit without parting from noble courtesy will yield righteous justice and bring forth enduring good.

நயன்ஈன்று நன்றி பயக்கும் பயன்ஈன்று
பண்பின் தலைப்பிரியாச் சொல்

Pleasant words free from pettiness and malice bring happiness both in the world to come and in this present life.

சிறுமையுவு நீங்கிய இன்சொல் மறுமையும்
இம்மையும் இன்பம் தரும்

Even if someone wounds you as cruelly as killing, the moment you recall one good they once did, the wrong is wiped away.

கொன்றன்ன இன்னா செயினும் அவர்செய்த
ஒன்றுநன்று உள்ளக் கெடும்

The wealth of an upright person does not crumble; it endures, and becomes a strength even to their descendants.

செப்பம் உடையவன் ஆக்கஞ் சிதைவின்றி
எச்சத்திற் கேமாப்பு உடைத்து

When your heart leaves fairness and turns toward wrong, know that your ruin is near at hand.

கெடுவல்யான் என்பது அறிகதன் நெஞ்சம்
நடுவொரீஇ அல்ல செயின்

Even a trader thrives who guards another's interest as his own, taking no excess and giving no less.

வாணிகம் செய்வார்க்கு வாணிகம் பேணிப்
பிறவும் தமபோல் செயின்

Self-control carries a person up to the world of the gods; the lack of it sweeps them into unending darkness.

அடக்கம் அமரருள் உய்க்கும் அடங்காமை
ஆரிருள் உய்த்து விடும்

Restraint practised knowingly, by the right path, is recognised by the good and brings lasting honour.

செறிவறிந்து சீர்மை பயக்கும் அறிவறிந்து
ஆற்றின் அடங்கப் பெறின்

Whatever else you fail to guard, guard your tongue; those who don't fall into the grief of a careless word.

யாகாவா ராயினும் நாகாக்க காவாக்கால்
சோகாப்பர் சொல்லிழுக்குப் பட்டு

If even one cruel word of yours brings another pain, all your other good is undone.

ஒன்றானுந் தீச்சொல் பொருட்பயன் உண்டாயின்
நன்றாகா தாகி விடும்

To the one who guards off anger and, learned, holds himself in, righteousness itself comes seeking.

கதங்காத்துக் கற்றடங்கல் ஆற்றுவான் செவ்வி
அறம்பார்க்கும் ஆற்றின் நுழைந்து

Good conduct is the true mark of noble standing; a lapse in conduct drops a person to a lower one.

ஒழுக்கம் உடைமை குடிமை இழுக்கம்
இழிந்த பிறப்பாய் விடும்

By right conduct people rise to greatness; by lapsing from it they draw disgrace they need never have had.

ஒழுக்கத்தின் எய்துவர் மேன்மை இழுக்கத்தின்
எய்துவர் எய்தாப் பழி

Those who truly possess good conduct cannot let a cruel word leave their lips, even by a slip.

ஒழுக்க முடையவர்க்கு ஒல்லாவே தீய
வழுக்கியும் வாயாற் சொலல்

He who thinks it easy and trespasses on another's wife earns a disgrace that never, ever fades.

எளிதென இல்லிறப்பான் எய்துமெஞ் ஞான்றும்
விளியாது நிற்கும் பழி

Hatred, sin, fear, and disgrace — these four never leave the man who violates another's home.

பகைபாவம் அச்சம் பழியென நான்கும்
இகவாவாம் இல்லிறப்பான் கண்

For the envious, envy alone is enough to ruin them — they need no enemy at all.

அழுக்காறு உடையார்க்கு அதுசாலும் ஒன்னார்
வழுக்காயும் கேடீன் பது

The family of the one who can't bear to see others given to will waste away, without even food or clothing.

கொடுப்பது அழுக்கறுப்பான் சுற்றம் உடுப்பதூஉம்
உண்பதூஉம் இன்றிக் கெடும்

Lakshmi, the deity of fortune, will not abide with the envious; she abandons them to her sister Misfortune and departs.

அவ்வித்து அழுக்காறு உடையானைச் செய்யவள்
தவ்வையைக் காட்டி விடும்

Envy, that matchless sinner, destroys a person's wealth here and drives them to the fire hereafter.

அழுக்காறு எனஒரு பாவி திருச்செற்றுத்
தீயுழி உய்த்து விடும்

If a man, abandoning fairness, covets another's goods, his greed ruins his own family and heaps wrongs on him at once.

நடுவின்றி நன்பொருள் வெஃகின் குடிபொன்றிக்
குற்றமும் ஆங்கே தரும்

Even one who loves grace and walks the household path to it is ruined the moment he covets another's wealth and plots crooked ways to get it.

அருள்வெஃகி ஆற்றின்கண் நின்றான் பொருள்வெஃகிப்
பொல்லாத சூழக் கெடும்

Fortune seeks out, of her own accord, the wise who know what is right and never covet — she finds the way to their door.

அறனறிந்து வெஃகா அறிவுடையார்ச் சேரும்
திறன்அறிந் தாங்கே திரு

Whoever speaks ill of another behind his back will have his own faults — the most wounding of them — picked out and told to his face.

பிறன்பழி கூறுவான் தன்பழி யுள்ளும்
திறன்தெரிந்து கூறப் படும்

Those who don't know how to speak warmly and win friends will, by divisive talk, split apart even close companions.

பகச்சொல்லிக் கேளிர்ப் பிரிப்பர் நகச்சொல்லி
நட்பாடல் தேற்றா தவர்

One who keeps speaking pointless words until the wise around him are sick of them is despised by everyone.

பல்லார் முனியப் பயனில சொல்லுவான்
எல்லாரும் எள்ளப் படும்

Speaking graceless, useless words before an assembly strips away the speaker's virtues and banishes all goodness from their life.

நயன்சாரா நன்மையின் நீக்கும் பயன்சாராப்
பண்பில்சொல் பல்லா ரகத்து

Even people of real worth lose their dignity and the respect it brings the moment they take to pointless talk.

சீர்மை சிறப்பொடு நீங்கும் பயனில
நீர்மை யுடையார் சொலின்

The pure and clear-sighted, free of all delusion, will not speak a pointless word even by a slip.

பொருள்தீர்ந்த பொச்சாந்துஞ் சொல்லார் மருள்தீர்ந்த
மாசறு காட்சி யவர்

Never plead poverty as an excuse to commit wrongful deeds; doing so only deepens one's destitution and leads to lasting ruin.

இலன்என்று தீயவை செய்யற்க செய்யின்
இலனாகும் மற்றும் பெயர்த்து

One may somehow escape the fiercest external enemy; but the hostility created by one's own evil deeds never leaves, tracking down and destroying the wrongdoer.

எனைப்பகை யுற்றாரும் உய்வர் வினைப்பகை
வீயாது பின்சென்று அடும்

The ruin of those who commit evil resembles a person's shadow: it never departs, but clings to their very steps wherever they go.

தீயவை செய்தார் கெடுதல் நிழல்தன்னை
வீயாது அஇஉறைந் தற்று

Know that a person who never swerves into crooked paths to commit evil deeds will stand secure against moral ruin.

அருங்கேடன் என்பது அறிக மருங்கோடித்
தீவினை செய்யான் எனின்

Those who clearly understand their civic duty do not shrink from helping others, even during periods when their own resources decline.

இடனில் பருவத்தும் ஒப்புரவிற்கு ஒல்கார்
கடனறி காட்சி யவர்

The fiery disease of hunger never touches one whose life is devoted to sharing daily food with those in need.

பாத்தூண் மரீஇ யவனைப் பசியென்னும்
தீப்பிணி தீண்டல் அரிது

All praises spoken by the world endure permanently only when attached to the names of those who give freely to the needy.

உரைப்பார் உரைப்பவை எல்லாம் இரப்பார்க்கொன்று
ஈவார்மேல் நிற்கும் புகழ்

If a person earns imperishable renown across this earth, the celestial realm will revere that person even above its own inhabitants.

நிலவரை நீள்புகழ் ஆற்றின் புலவரைப்
போற்றாது புத்தேள் உலகு

For those whose hearts are filled with universal compassion, there is no entry into the dark, sorrowful realm of misery.

அருள்சேர்ந்த நெஞ்சினார்க் கில்லை இருள்சேர்ந்த
இன்னா உலகம் புகல்

For one who cherishes living beings and practices compassion, there exists no wrongful deed that causes their own soul to tremble in fear.

மன்னுயிர் ஓம்பி அருளாள்வார்க்கு இல்லென்ப
தன்னுயிர் அஞ்சும் வினை

Misery never touches those who govern their lives by compassion; the vast, fertile earth through which the winds blow stands as proof.

அல்லல் அருளாள்வார்க்கு இல்லை வளிவழங்கும்
மல்லன்மா ஞாலங் கரி

The continuance of embodied life rests upon not eating flesh; if one eats it, the hell that swallows that person will not open its mouth to release them.

உண்ணாமை உள்ளது உயிர்நிலை ஊனுண்ண
அண்ணாத்தல் செய்யாது அளறு

Those whose discernment is freed from the fault of delusion do not eat flesh separated from life.

செயிரின் தலைப்பிரிந்த காட்சியார் உண்ணார்
உயிரின் தலைப்பிரிந்த ஊன்

All living beings will join their hands in worship before the one who kills no life and has rejected flesh.

கொல்லான் புலாலை மறுத்தானைக் கைகூப்பி
எல்லா உயிருந் தொழும்

The verse attributes to the power of austerity, if the practitioner so intends, the destruction of adversaries and the elevation of those who delight in it.

ஒன்னார்த் தெறலும் உவந்தாரை ஆக்கலும்
எண்ணின் தவத்தான் வரும்

All other enduring beings will revere the person who has gained true mastery of their own life-self.

தன்னுயிர் தான்அறப் பெற்றானை ஏனைய
மன்னுயி ரெல்லாந் தொழும்

Those who attain the full power arising from austerity are said to succeed even in passing beyond Death.

கூற்றம் குதித்தலும் கைகூடும் நோற்றலின்
ஆற்றல் தலைப்பட் டவர்க்குல்

The concealed false conduct of those who say, ‘We are free of attachment,’ will later bring many troubles and repeated regret: ‘What have we done?’

பற்றற்றேம் என்பார் படிற்றொழுக்கம் எற்றெற்றென்று
ஏதம் பலவுந் தரும்

Wealth gained through theft may seem to grow beyond measure, but it will collapse beyond measure.

களவினால் ஆகிய ஆக்கம் அளவிறந்து
ஆவது போலக் கெடும்

Love deeply rooted in theft will, when it bears fruit, produce suffering that does not cease.

களவின்கண் கன்றிய காதல் விளைவின்கண்
வீயா விழுமம் தரும்

Those whose desire is deeply fixed on theft cannot live by the measured discernment of soul, moral consequence, and liberation.

அளவின்கண் நின்றொழுகல் ஆற்றார் களவின்கண்
கன்றிய காத லவர்

Those who understand nothing beyond theft come to ruin the very moment they form thoughts outside the right measure.

அளவல்ல செய்தாங்கே வீவர் களவல்ல
மற்றைய தேற்றா தவர்

For those who practise theft, even the stability of embodied life will fail; for those who do not steal, the divine world will not fail.

கள்வார்க்குத் தள்ளும் உயிர்நிலை கள்வார்க்குத்
தள்ளாது புத்தே ளுளகு

Do not speak what your own conscience knows to be false; after the lie, that same conscience will burn within you.

தன்நெஞ் சறிவது பொய்யற்க பொய்த்தபின்
தன்நெஞ்சே தன்னைச் சுடும்

One who lives without falsehood in the heart lives in the hearts of people throughout the world.

உள்ளத்தாற் பொய்யா தொழுகின் உலகத்தார்
உள்ளத்து ளெல்லாம் உளன்

There is no renown like freedom from falsehood; without bodily mortification, it brings the fruit of every virtue.

பொய்யாமை அன்ன புகழில்லை எய்யாமை
எல்லா அறமுந் தரும்

Anger kills both the smile on the face and gladness within; what other enemy works so directly against us?

நகையும் உவகையும் கொல்லும் சினத்தின்
பகையும் உளவோ பிற

To protect oneself, guard anger; left unguarded, anger brings severe harm upon the very person who carries it.

தன்னைத்தான் காக்கின் சினங்காக்க காவாக்கால்
தன்னையே கொல்லுஞ் சினம்

Anger is like a fire that harms the person it grips and can burn through the protective raft of supportive relationships around them.

சினமென்னும் சேர்ந்தாரைக் கொல்லி இனமென்னும்
ஏமப் புணையைச் சுடும்

Whoever prizes anger as proof of strength inevitably loses that strength, as surely as a hand striking the ground meets the force of its own blow.

சினத்தைப் பொருளென்று கொண்டவன் கேடு
நிலத்தறைந்தான் கைபிழையா தற்று

If a person never entertains anger in the heart, everything they contemplate is attained at once.

உள்ளிய தெல்லாம் உடனெய்தும் உள்ளத்தால்
உள்ளான் வெகுளி எனின்

Even when an enemy attacks without provocation, retaliating with pain brings suffering from which escape is difficult.

செய்யாமல் செற்றார்க்கும் இன்னாத செய்தபின்
உய்யா விழுமந் தரும்

If one causes pain to others in the first half of the day, suffering will return of its own accord in the second half.

பிறர்க்கின்னா முற்பகல் செய்யின் தமக்குஇன்னா
பிற்பகல் தாமே வரும்

All suffering returns upon those who inflict it; therefore, those who desire freedom from sorrow never cause harm to others.

நோயெல்லாம் நோய்செய்தார் மேலவாம் நோய்செய்யார்
நோயின்மை வேண்டு பவர்

If asked what the work of virtue is, it is non-killing; killing brings every other evil deed in its train.

அறவினை யாதெனின் கொல்லாமை கோறல்
பிறவினை எல்லாந் தரும்

Death, the devourer of life, will not approach the span of one who undertakes non-killing as a way of conduct.

கொல்லாமை மேற்கொண் டொழுகுவான் வாழ்நாள்மேல்
செல்லாது உயிருண்ணுங் கூற்று

Those living in diseased bodies and in an abject life of poverty are said by interpreters of karma to be people who removed lives from bodies in a former birth.

உயிருடம்பின் நீக்கியா ரென்ப செயிருடம்பின்
செல்லாத்தீ வாழ்க்கை யவர்

One who cuts off the pride that says ‘I’ and ‘mine’ will enter a realm higher even than that of the heavenly beings.

யான்எனது என்னும் செருக்குஅறுப்பான் வானோர்க்கு
உயர்ந்த உலகம் புகும்

Only when attachment is absent is rebirth cut off; otherwise, recurring impermanence is what will be seen.

பற்றற்ற கண்ணே பிறப்பறுக்கும் மற்று
நிலையாமை காணப் படும்

Mistaking what lacks ultimate reality for enduring reality is the delusion that produces a sorrowful birth.

பொருளல்ல வற்றைப் பொருளென்று உணரும்
மருளானாம் மாணாப் பிறப்பு

For those whose delusion has left and whose vision of truth is stainless, the darkness of rebirth departs and the bliss of liberation arises.

இருள்நீங்கி இன்பம் பயக்கும் மருள்நீங்கி
மாசறு காட்சி யவர்க்கு

Those who learn here and realize ultimate truth will attain the path by which they do not return here again.

கற்றீண்டு மெய்ப்பொருள் கண்டார் தலைப்படுவர்
மற்றீண்டு வாரா நெறி

If the mind examines carefully, becomes firmly clear, and realizes what truly is, it need not think again of another birth.

ஓர்த்துள்ளம் உள்ளது உணரின் ஒருதலையாப்
பேர்த்துள்ள வேண்டா பிறப்பு

If one realizes the true support and lives so that attachments cease, the sufferings that would cling can no longer destroy that realization and conduct or cling afterward.

சார்புணர்ந்து சார்பு கெடஒழுகின் மற்றழித்துச்
சார்தரா சார்தரு நோய்

When desire, anger, and delusion—the three—vanish so completely that even their names disappear, the karmic suffering produced by them also ends.

காமம் வெகுளி மயக்கம் இவ்மூன்றன்
நாமம் கெடக்கெடும் நோய்

If one can cut desire off completely, the unfailing deed that leads to liberation will come in the way one rightly seeks.

அவாவினை ஆற்ற அறுப்பின் தவாவினை
தான்வேண்டு மாற்றான் வரும்

For those without desire, the suffering caused by it will be absent; if desire remains, that suffering comes on and on without end.

அவாஇல்லார்க் கில்லாகுந் துன்பம் அஃதுண்டேல்
தவாஅது மேன்மேல் வரும்

If the deepest suffering called desire comes to an end, uninterrupted joy is possible even here in embodied life.

இன்பம் இடையறா தீண்டும் அவாவென்னும்
துன்பத்துள் துன்பங் கெடின்

Though one studies many subtle books, one's destiny-shaped underlying understanding will still prevail.

நுண்ணிய நூல்பல கற்பினும் மற்றுந்தன்
உண்மை யறிவே மிகும்

Even for those who gather millions, enjoyment is difficult except in the manner allotted by the One who apportions.

வகுத்தான் வகுத்த வகையல்லால் கோடி
தொகுத்தார்க்கு துய்த்தல் அரிது

If a ruler is easy to meet for those seeking justice or relief and is not harsh in speech, the world will praise that ruler's land above others.

காட்சிக் கெளியன் கடுஞ்சொல்லன் அல்லனேல்
மீக்கூறும் மன்னன் நிலம்

For one able to give and protect with pleasant speech, this world will, by that leader's word, become as extensive as the leader intends.

இன்சொலால் ஈத்தளிக்க வல்லார்க்குத் தன்சொலால்
தான்கண் டனைத்திவ் வுலகு

The ruler who administers justice and protects people from being harmed by others will be regarded by those people as their divinely honoured protector.

முறைசெய்து காப்பாற்றும் மன்னவன் மக்கட்கு
இறையென்று வைக்கப் படும்

The world will remain beneath the protective canopy of a ruler who has the character to endure words that are bitter to the ear.

செவிகைப்பச் சொற்பொறுக்கும் பண்புடை வேந்தன்
கவிகைக்கீழ்த் தங்கும் உலகு

To the learned, every country is their own country and every town their own town; why then does anyone remain unlearned until death?

யாதானும் நாடாமால் ஊராமால் என்னொருவன்
சாந்துணையுங் கல்லாத வாறு

The learning acquired in one birth becomes a protection for a person through seven births.

ஒருமைக்கண் தான்கற்ற கல்வி ஒருவற்கு
எழுமையும் ஏமாப் புடைத்து

An unlearned person's self-estimated intellectual stature collapses when informed discussion begins.

கல்லா ஒருவன் தகைமை தலைப்பெய்து
சொல்லாடச் சோர்வு படும்

Those whose listening has accumulated through careful discernment will not voice a foolish claim, even when they have first understood something incorrectly.

பிழைத்துணர்ந்தும் பேதைமை சொல்லா ரிழைத்துணர்ந்
தீண்டிய கேள்வி யவர்

It is difficult for those without subtle learning gained by listening to possess speech that bends with humility.

நுணங்கிய கேள்விய ரல்லார் வணங்கிய
வாயின ராதல் அரிது

No suffering arrives to make those with foresight tremble when they understand what is coming and protect against it in advance.

எதிரதாக் காக்கும் அறிவினார்க் கில்லை
அதிர வருவதோர் நோய்

The life of one who does not guard before a fault arrives will perish like a heap of dry straw before fire.

For those who choose a knowledgeable council, examine the undertaking with it, and then think for themselves before acting, no objective remains inherently unattainable.

Rising against an enemy without fully considering every relevant course is a way of planting that enemy in a bed where it can grow.

Ruin comes both from doing what ought not to be done and from failing to do what ought to be done.

Effort not pursued through a means capable of completing it will expose its flaw even when many people stand together to support it.

For one already standing at a branch's tip, pushing beyond that limit can make the impulse itself an end to life.

நுனிக்கொம்பர் ஏறினார் அஃதிறந் தூக்கின்
உயிர்க்கிறுதி ஆகி விடும்

The life of one who does not live according to known means appears to exist, then becomes nothing and vanishes without even that appearance.

அளவறிந்து வாழாதான் வாழ்க்கை உளபோல
இல்லாகித் தோன்றாக் கெடும்

Beneficence that does not weigh the limit of available means will quickly destroy the boundary of one's wealth.

உளவரை தூக்காத ஒப்புர வாண்மை
வளவரை வல்லைக் கெடும்

When facing an adversary, endure until a decisive vulnerability appears; when it does, the adversary's dominance will fall.

செறுநரைக் காணின் சுமக்க இறுவரை
காணின் கிழக்காம் தலை

Even for those whose strength is joined with martial skill, the advantage gained by joining a fort yields many benefits.

முரண்சேர்ந்த மொய்ம்பி னவர்க்கும் அரண்சேர்ந்தாம்
ஆக்கம் பலவுந் தரும்

Even those without strength can become capable and prevail if they know the fitting place, protect themselves, and act against their opponents.

ஆற்றாரும் ஆற்றி அடுப இடனறிந்து
போற்றார்கண் போற்றிச் செயின்

If those who have found the fitting place draw near, hold their position, and act, the opponents who planned victory will lose that plan.

Even after people have been examined in every way and trusted, many become different because of the particular nature of the work.

If a king does not regard everyone identically but recognises each according to rank or fitness, many relatives and retainers will remain with him for that distinction.

Those who were once one's own and left because they could not remain in accord return as one's circle when the cause of that non-agreement no longer exists on one's side.

காரணம் இன்றி வரும்

Forgetful negligence destroys a person's reputation, just as continual destitution destroys learning or practical intelligence.

பொச்சாப்புக் கொல்லும் புகழை அறிவினை
நிச்ச நிரப்புக் கொன்றாங்கு

Those who live in habitual forgetful negligence gain no lasting renown; this is the settled conclusion of learned people of every kind throughout the world.

One who forgetfully fails to foresee and guard against preventable trouble later grieves over that error when the trouble arrives and prevention is too late.

No undertaking need remain impossible merely because it is difficult, if it is thoughtfully guarded and performed with a non-forgetting mind as the instrument.

Seasonal rain and unfailing yield gather together in the land of a ruler who wields the sceptre according to the prescribed just order.

பெயலும் விளையுளும் தொக்கு

Though easy to approach, a ruler who fails to investigate and decide according to established truth will bring about his own fall from his low position.

The country of a king who does not investigate wrongs and apply justice every day declines day after day.

If the guardian-ruler fails to protect living beings, cows' yield will diminish and the Brahmans of the six duties will forget their sacred texts.

The world rightfully belongs to those who can show considerate regard without letting their duty fail.

கருமம் சிதையாமல் கண்ணோட வல்லார்க்கு
உரிமை உடைத்திவ் வுலகு

A king who gathers reports through spies but does not examine their meaning and consequence has no other path by which to attain victory.

ஒற்றினான் ஒற்றிப் பொருள்தெரியா மன்னவன்
கொற்றங் கொளக்கிடந்தது இல்

Those who hold firmly established resolve in hand as their resource do not cry in despair, ‘We have lost our prosperity.’

ஆக்கம் இழந்தேமென்று அல்லாவார் ஊக்கம்
ஒருவந்தம் கைத்துடை யார்

Prosperity will ask the way and go to the person whose resolve does not waver.

ஆக்கம் அதர்வினாய்ச் செல்லும் அசைவிலா
ஊக்க முடையா னுழை

Rulers without resolve do not attain, in this world, the proud self-regard of being called generous.

உள்ளம் இலாதவர் எய்தார் உலகத்து
வள்ளியம் என்னுஞ் செருக்கு

The unfailing lamp called a household's standing fades and is extinguished when the stain called sloth spreads over it.

குடியென்னும் குன்றா விளக்கம் மடியென்னும்
மாசூர மாய்ந்து கெடும்

The house of the foolish person who holds destructive sloth within will decline even before that person does.

மடிமடிக் கொண்டொழுகும் பேதை பிறந்த
குடிமடியும் தன்னினும் முந்து

For those sunk in sloth and without worthy effort, the house declines and faults multiply.

குடிமடிந்து குற்றம் பெருகும் மடிமடிந்து
மாண்ட உஞற்றி லவர்க்கு

Those who embrace sloth and lack worthy effort will hear forceful rebuke and, later, words of contempt.

இடிபுரிந்து எள்ளுஞ்சொல் கேட்பர் மடிபுரிந்து
மாண்ட உஞற்றி லவர்

If sloth settles in a person responsible for a house, it will place that person in subjection to enemies.

மடிமை குடிமைக்கண் தங்கின்தன் ஒன்னார்க்கு
அடிமை புகுத்தி விடும்

When a person removes the disposition ruled by sloth, faults that entered household leadership and effective capability disappear.

குடியாண்மை யுள்வந்த குற்றம் ஒருவன்
மடியாண்மை மாற்றக் கெடும்

The ruler without sloth will attain at once the whole expanse measured by the divine being's feet.

மடியிலா மன்னவன் எய்தும் அடியளந்தான்

Once a work has begun, guard it from failing through incompletion. The world withdraws its trust from those who repeatedly leave a work deficient.

One who seeks the work to be done rather than private pleasure becomes a supporting pillar, removing the suffering of those close to them.

இன்பம் விழையான் வினைவிழைவான் தன்கேளிர்
துன்பம் துடைத்தூன்றும் தூண்

Those who act without agitation or delay, adapting and persisting, make even the fate that obstructs their result turn its back.

ஊழையும் உப்பக்கம் காண்பர் உலைவின்றித்
தாழாது உஞற்று பவர்

Even when troubles swell like a flood, a discerning mind can regard and contain them clearly; they then lose their power to overwhelm the inner life.

வெள்ளத் தனைய இடும்பை அறிவுடையான்
உள்ளத்தின் உள்ளக் கெடும்

Those who do not surrender to grief when adversity interrupts their work put adversity itself under strain until its hold weakens.

இடும்பைக்கு இடும்பை படுப்பர் இடும்பைக்கு
இடும்பை படாஅ தவர்

Even when adversities arrive one upon another, they themselves are worn down against a person whose inner purpose does not disintegrate.

அடுக்கி வரினும் அழிவிலான் உற்ற
இடுக்கண் இடுக்கட் படும்

Those who did not cling to prosperity with possessive hoarding do not collapse into ‘we have nothing’ when it recedes.

அற்றேமென்று அல்லற் படுபவோ பெற்றேமென்று
ஓம்புதல் தேற்றா தவர்

One who does not demand uninterrupted pleasure and understands effort's ordinary hardship as part of undertaking the work is not inwardly overthrown when that hardship arrives.

இன்பம் விழையான் இடும்பை இயல்பென்பான்
துன்பம் உறுதல் இலன்

When one receives the necessary hardship of worthy effort as part of its joy, a distinction arises that even rivals are moved to respect.

இன்னாமை இன்பம் எனக்கொளின் ஆகுந்தன்
ஒன்னார் விழையுஞ் சிறப்பு

Those who lack the practical capacity to finish leave work incomplete even after planning it properly and in order.

முறைப்படச் சூழ்ந்தும் முடிவிலவே செய்வர்
திறப்பாடு இலாஅ தவர்

True speech binds friendly hearers and makes even those opposed to it desire friendship.

கேட்டார்ப் பிணிக்கும் தகையவாய்க் கேளாரும்
வேட்ப மொழிவதாம் சொல்

One who can speak fittingly, does not lapse, and does not fear the assembly is difficult for anyone to defeat in debate.

சொலல்வல்லன் சோர்விலன் அஞ்சான் அவனை
இகல்வெல்லல் யார்க்கும் அரிது

When someone can arrange matters in order and present them pleasantly, the world quickly undertakes the work.

விரைந்து தொழில்கேட்கும் ஞாலம் நிரந்தினிது
சொல்லுதல் வல்லார்ப் பெறின்

Even when hardship closes in, people of unwavering clarity do not perform a degrading deed.

இடுக்கண் படினும் இளிவந்த செய்யார்
நடுக்கற்ற காட்சி யவர்

To those who knowingly do what moral teaching condemns, those very deeds bring suffering even if they first succeed.

கடிந்த கடிந்தொரார் செய்தார்க்கு அவைதாம்
முடிந்தாலும் பீழை தரும்

All wealth taken through others' tears will depart amid one's own tears; goods of the good kind may be lost first yet bear fruit later.

அழக்கொண்ட எல்லாம் அழப்போம் இழப்பினும்
பிற்பயக்கும் நற்பா லவை

Strength lies in carrying an undertaking so that it becomes known at completion; if exposed midway, that exposure can bring trouble not easily removed.

கடைக்கொட்கச் செய்தக்க தாண்மை இடைக்கொட்கின்
எற்றா விழுமந் தரும்

The firmness in action of accomplished ministers, once it finds established acceptance with the ruler, will be esteemed throughout the realm.

வீறெய்தி மாண்டார் வினைத்திட்பம் வேந்தன்கண்

Planners may attain what they intended in the manner intended, if they remain firm in the action that is the means to it.

The firm envoy who carries a ruler's mandate does not let fear make his mouth utter a blemishing or demeaning version of the entrusted message.

வாய்சோரா வன்க ணவன்

Not becoming a personal rival for what the ruler seeks brings the minister enduring prosperity from that ruler.

மன்னர் விழைப விழையாமை மன்னரால்
மன்னிய ஆக்கந் தரும்

Those who would protect themselves must prevent grave faults; after a ruler has become suspicious, clearing that suspicion is difficult for anyone.

போற்றின் அரியவை போற்றல் கடுத்தபின்
தேற்றுதல் யார்க்கும் அரிது

Presumptuous familiarity that treats long association as permission for conduct outside proper character brings ruin.

பழையம் எனக்கருதிப் பண்பல்ல செய்யும்
கெழுதகைமை கேடு தரும்

If a minister can discern the differing ways of a foreign ruler's gaze, the eyes themselves will declare that ruler's hostility and friendship.

பகைமையும் கேண்மையும் கண்ணுரைக்கும் கண்ணின்
வகைமை உணர்வார்ப் பெறின்

Those who take up speaking without knowing the assembly understand neither the forms of speech nor any art they claim to command.

அவையறியார் சொல்லல்மேற் கொள்பவர் சொல்லின்
வகையறியார் வல்லதூஉம் இல்

The learning of one who has studied and understood shines in an assembly capable of examining words without fault.

கற்றறிந்தார் கல்வி விளங்கும் கசடறச்
சொல்தெரிதல் வல்லார் அகத்து

However much they have studied, those who cannot make good ideas reach a good assembly effectively bring no benefit to the world.

பல்லவை கற்றும் பயமிலரே நல்லவையுள்
நன்கு செலச்சொல்லா தார்

A true fort enables those who hold it to keep their positions and defeat even enemies powerful enough to encircle it fully.

முற்றாற்றி முற்றி யவரையும் பற்றாற்றிப்
பற்றியார் வெல்வது அரண்

An excellent fort gives its defenders mastery in action at the battlefront, so that the opposing force is overcome as the engagement begins.

முனைமுகத்து மாற்றலர் சாய வினைமுகத்து
வீறெய்தி மாண்ட தரண்

Wealth acquired with knowledge of proper method and without wrongdoing yields both virtue and enjoyment.

அறன்ஈனும் இன்பமும் ஈனும் திறனறிந்து
தீதின்றி வந்த பொருள்

For those who have built abundant resources by honourable means, the other two ends—virtue and wholesome enjoyment—become attainable together.

ஒண்பொருள் காழ்ப்ப இயற்றியார்க்கு எண்பொருள்
ஏனை இரண்டும் ஒருங்கு

Warriors who do not fear for life when battle comes do not lose their martial distinction, even when their ruler angrily restrains them.

உறின்உயிர் அஞ்சா மறவர் இறைவன்
செறினும் சீர்குன்றல் இலர்

Friendship formed without examining a person again and again will, in the end, bring its maker grief capable of destroying him.

ஆய்ந்தாய்ந்து கொள்ளாதான் கேண்மை கடைமுறை
தான்சாம் துயரம் தரும்

The friendship of those who desert one in ruin will burn the heart when remembered, even as death draws near.

கெடுங்காலைக் கைவிடுவார் கேண்மை அடுங்காலை
உள்ளினும் உள்ளஞ் சுடும்

If an established friend acts without asking through affectionate familiarity, people of discernment will welcome the act because it is genuinely desirable.

விழைதகையான் வேண்டி இருப்பர் கெழுதகையாற்
கேளாது நட்டார் செயின்

Those who stay within friendship’s proper bounds will not abandon the bond of a friend who has stood with them from of old, even when loss comes through that friend.

எல்லைக்கண் நின்றார் துறவார் தொலைவிடத்தும்
தொல்லைக்கண் நின்றார் தொடர்பு

Those whose old friendship has grown along the path of love do not cease loving even when the friend does something that brings them ruin.

அழிவந்த செய்யினும் அன்பறார் அன்பின்
வழிவந்த கேண்மை யவர்

For one skilled in the familiar liberty of friendship, who does not accept reports of a friend’s fault uncritically, the day an old friend actually errs becomes a useful day for truth and repair.

கேளிழுக்கம் கேளாக் கெழுதகைமை வல்லார்க்கு
நாளிழுக்கம் நட்டார் செயின்

The world esteems those who do not discard the friendship of people whose close bond has come down through time without decay.

கெடாஅ வழிவந்த கேண்மையார் கேண்மை
விடாஅர் விழையும் உலகு

Even those who did not desire them will seek people who do not depart from their own good character toward old friends.

விழையார் விழையப் படுப பழையார்கண்
பண்பின் தலைப்பிரியா தார்

Even when an opponent speaks helpful words like a friend, what those words truly serve soon becomes clear.

நட்டார்போல் நல்லவை சொல்லினும் ஒட்டார்சொல்
ஒல்லை உணரப் படும்

Within one birth, a person can commit a deed that, in the verse's moral cosmology, sinks them in hell through seven births.

If a person already ruled by confused judgment gains even one possession or power, the confusion grows like intoxication added to an existing delirium.

மையல் ஒருவன் களித்தற்றால் பேதைதன்
கையொன்று உடைமை பெறின்

Pretending mastery over what one has not learned casts doubt even upon the subjects one has truly mastered.

கல்லாத மேற்கொண் டொழுகல் கசடற
வல்லதூஉம் ஐயம் தரும்

One who receives rare and precious counsel but lets it slip away brings great calamity upon oneself.

அருமறை சோரும் அறிவிலான் செய்யும்
பெருமிறை தானே தனக்கு

One who neither heeds wise guidance nor discerns the right path on their own remains a continuing affliction to the world until death.

ஏவவும் செய்கலான் தான்தேறான் அவ்வுயிர்
போஒம் அளவுமோர் நோய்

One who tries to enlighten an unreceptive person is dismissed as unseeing; the unreceptive person counts only his own flawed vision as truth.

காணாதான் காட்டுவான் தான்காணான் காணாதான்

Hoarding wealth believing it accomplishes everything, yet giving nothing away, leads to endless craving and misery.

பொருளானாம் எல்லாமென்று ஈயாது இவறும்
மருளானாம் மாணாப் பிறப்பு

Denying oneself, shunning loved ones, and ignoring virtue to hoard wealth will only leave it for strangers to take.

அன்பொரீஇத் தற்செற்று அறநோக்காது ஈட்டிய
ஒண்பொருள் கொள்வார் பிறர்

If one feels no shame at what others shrink from, virtue itself shrinks from him in disgust.

பிறர்நாணத் தக்கது தான்நாணா னாயின்
அறம்நாணத் தக்கது உடைத்து

Lapsing in conduct stains family honor; but shamelessness utterly destroys every virtue you possess.

குலஞ்சுடும் கொள்கை பிழைப்பின் நலஞ்சுடும்
நாணின்மை நின்றக் கடை

A family rises to greatness through continuous effort combined with mature wisdom.

ஆள்வினையும் ஆன்ற அறிவும் எனஇரண்டின்
நீள்வினையால் நீளும் குடி

The world gathers round as family to anyone who uplifts their household blamelessly.

குற்றம் இலனாய்க் குடிசெய்து வாழ்வானைச்
சுற்றமாச் சுற்றும் உலகு

Those raising a family cannot wait for opportune times; indulging sloth and pride only ruins the home.

A family collapses under crisis if there is no strong pillar to step forward and support it.

இடுக்கண்கால் கொன்றிட வீழும் அடுத்தூன்றும்

Those who dwell under the shade of abundant harvest will see kingdoms united under their ruler's crown.

பலகுடை நீழலும் தங்குடைக்கீழ்க் காண்பர்

If the farmer's hands fold in idleness, even ascetics who renounce the world cannot endure.

If an owner fails to visit his fields daily, the land turns cold and withholds its bounty.

செல்லான் கிழவன் இருப்பின் நிலம்புலந்து
இல்லாளின் ஊடி விடும்

When the sinner called poverty strikes, it robs a person of happiness both in this life and the next.

இன்மை எனவொரு பாவி மறுமையும்
இம்மையும் இன்றி வரும்

The sting of poverty destroys at once both ancestral honor and dignified speech.

தொல்வரவும் தோலும் கெடுக்கும் தொகையாக
நல்குரவு என்னும் நசை

Even among the nobly born, poverty brings the desperation that forces humiliating words.

இற்பிறந்தார் கண்ணேயும் இன்மை இளிவந்த
சொற்பிறக்கும் சோர்வு தரும்

Within the single misery of poverty, all other forms of suffering gather and take root.

நல்குரவு என்னும் இடும்பையுள் பல்குரைத்
துன்பங்கள் சென்று படும்

One who is poor without virtue will be regarded as a stranger even by their own mother.

அறஞ்சாரா நல்குரவு ஈன்றதா யானும்
பிறன்போல நோக்கப் படும்

Those with nothing who refuse to renounce the world become a destructive drain on others' humble salt and broth.

துப்புர வில்லார் துவரத் துறவாமை
உப்பிற்கும் காடிக்கும் கூற்று

The needy dare to stand and ask openly only because open-handed givers exist in the world.

கரப்பிலார் வையகத்து உண்மையால் கண்ணின்று
இரப்பவர் மேற்கொள் வது

Meeting someone free from the disease of stinginess dispels all the pains of poverty at once.

கரப்பிடும்பை யில்லாரைக் காணின் நிரப்பிடும்பை
எல்லாம் ஒருங்கு கெடும்

When meeting givers who help without mockery, the heart overflows with inner delight.

இகழ்ந்தெள்ளாது ஈவாரைக் காணின் மகிழ்ந்துள்ளம்
உள்ளுள் உவப்பது உடைத்து

The fragile boat of begging shatters when it strikes the hidden rock of refusal.

இரவென்னும் ஏமாப்பில் தோணி கரவென்னும்
பார்தாக்கப் பக்கு விடும்

The heart melts thinking of the shame of begging; thinking of cold refusal, it turns entirely numb.

இரவுள்ள உள்ளம் உருகும் கரவுள்ள
உள்ளதூஉம் இன்றிக் கெடும்

Seeing someone with lower conduct, the base person swells with pride at being worse.

அகப்பட்டி ஆவாரைக் காணின் அவரின்
மிகப்பட்டுச் செம்மாக்கும் கீழ்

Envious at seeing others well clothed and fed, the base invent non-existent faults to slander them.

உடுப்பதூஉம் உண்பதூஉம் காணின் பிறர்மேல்
வடுக்காண வற்றாகும் கீழ்

I refuse to blink lest he be hidden, yet the town claims my lover is cold and unkind.

இமைப்பின் கரப்பாக்கு அறிவல் அனைத்திற்கே
ஏதிலர் என்னும் இவ்வூர்

He dwells joyfully within my heart, though the foolish town gossips that he has left me.

உவந்துறைவர் உள்ளத்துள் என்றும் இகந்துறைவர்
ஏதிலர் என்னும் இவ்வூர்

Unable to bear this torment, my body and soul discard all modesty to mount the horse.

These arms, which lost their old beauty when their companion went away, have now lost their fullness as well, and the bright bangles slip from them of themselves.

பணைநீங்கிப் பைந்தொடி சோரும் துணைநீங்கித்
தொல்கவின் வாடிய தோள்

I loosened the arms that were holding her, only so as not to hurt her — and at that much alone the forehead of that trusting girl in her bright bangles lost its colour.

முயங்கிய கைகளை ஊக்கப் பசந்தது
பைந்தொடிப் பேதை நுதல்

Keep in the heart the man who went away rather than come near, and the grace we still have left will go the way of the grace already gone.

துன்னாத் துறந்தாரை நெஞ்சத்து உடையேமா
இன்னும் இழத்தும் கவின்

The axe that is desire breaks the door called self-command, for all that the bolt of shame was drawn across it.

காமக் கணிச்சி உடைக்கும் நிறையென்னும்
நாணுத்தாழ் வீழ்த்த கதவு

The brightness has gone out of my eyes and left them dull; and my fingers are worn away with touching, one by one, the marks that count the days since he went.

வாளற்றுப் புற்கென்ற கண்ணும் அவர்சென்ற
நாளொற்றித் தேய்ந்த விரல்

You whose jewels are shining: if I let him go from my mind for even this one day, my beauty will walk out on me, and the bangles will slip from my arms.

இலங்கிழாய் இன்று மறப்பின்என் தோள்மேல்
கலங்கழியும் காரிகை நீத்து

Let me only see him, and see him until my eyes are full; once I have seen him like that, the pallor on my arms will go of its own accord.
