Setting Reserve Aside
On longing that outgrows discretion, and on what a person will admit when concealment stops working.
This chapter is about the moment concealment stops working. Reserve is what keeps a private feeling private; these ten verses describe a person for whom reserve has run out.
The old Tamil poets had a name for what follows. A man who could no longer hold his love in would cut a horse-shape from the stem of a palmyra leaf, ride it through the streets, and let the town see exactly what he felt. Riding the palmyra horse meant giving up the right to be thought discreet. Kural 1131 says that for someone worn down by love, no other support is left.
Kurals 1132 to 1134 trace how the defences fall. In 1132 the body and the life within it, unable to bear the pain any longer, push shame aside and turn toward the palmyra horse. In 1133 the speaker measures the loss plainly: reserve and good manliness were his once; today he owns only the lover's palmyra. In 1134 those two qualities become a raft, and the flood of love carries the raft away.
Kurals 1135 and 1136 fix the pain to a particular person and a particular hour. In 1135 the woman with the small close-set bangles has given him two things at once — the palmyra horse and the grief that arrives at evening. In 1136 sleep will not come, and at midnight, when everyone else is asleep, his mind is still on riding out.
Then the chapter turns. Kural 1137 says nothing is worthier than a woman who bears love as vast as the sea and still does not ride out — praise for the endurance the earlier verses gave up. But 1138 answers that love itself is no respecter of that endurance: it neither fears her self-command nor pities her, and it walks her secret into the public square. In 1139 her love, convinced that nobody has noticed, wanders the streets bewildered. And in 1140 the ones who have never felt any of this laugh in her face.
What survives the old custom is the question underneath it: how long can a person carry a feeling alone, and what does it cost when it finally shows. The chapter neither recommends the display nor mocks the one who breaks.
