Shame at wrongdoing

If a life is lived fearing dishonor and sharing meals with others, its noble lineage will never fail through time.

பழியஞ்சிப் பாத்தூண் உடைத்தாயின் வாழ்க்கை
வழியெஞ்சல் எஞ்ஞான்றும் இல்

Those who shrink in shame from any unfairness will not, for the gain it might bring, do the shameful things coveting leads to.

படுபயன் வெஃகிப் பழிப்படுவ செய்யார்
நடுவன்மை நாணு பவர்

Those accustomed to wrongdoing feel no dread of evil deeds; but the noble and virtuous dread that reckless arrogance as a mortal danger.

தீவினையார் அஞ்சார் விழுமியார் அஞ்சுவர்
தீவினை என்னும் செருக்கு

Because evil deeds inevitably produce suffering for the doer, one must fear doing evil even more than physical fire. Fire burns only what it touches; evil deeds destroy one's soul and posterity.

தீயவை தீய பயத்தலால் தீயவை
தீயினும் அஞ்சப் படும்

What use is an appearance lofty as the sky if one's own heart sinks under a fault it knows to be wrong?

வானுயர் தோற்றம் எவன்செய்யும் தன்னெஞ்சம்
தான்அறி குற்றப் படின்

Do not speak what your own conscience knows to be false; after the lie, that same conscience will burn within you.

தன்நெஞ் சறிவது பொய்யற்க பொய்த்தபின்
தன்நெஞ்சே தன்னைச் சுடும்

A noble way to correct someone who caused pain is to offer a bounded good that awakens moral shame, then release both the wrong and one's own good deed from the ledger.

இன்னாசெய் தாரை ஒறுத்தல் அவர்நாண
நன்னயஞ் செய்து விடல்

Those who are ethically ashamed of blameworthy conduct regard even a millet-sized fault in themselves as though it were palm-sized.

தினைத்துணையாங் குற்றம் வரினும் பனைத்துணையாக்
கொள்வர் பழிநாணு வார்

பிறர்பழியும் தம்பழியும் நாணுவார் நாணுக்கு
உறைபதி என்னும் உலகு

The truly noble hold moral conscience as their safeguard; they will not cast it off even to win the world.

நாணின்மை நின்றக் கடை

The motions of those without conscience within are like a wooden puppet pretending to be alive.

நாண்அகத் தில்லார் இயக்கம் மரப்பாவை
நாணால் உயிர்மருட்டி அற்று

Endowed with a fawn's soft glance and modesty, what need has she of alien ornaments?

பிணையேர் மடநோக்கும் நாணும் உடையாட்கு
அணியெவனோ ஏதில தந்து

She never looks straight, but casts a teasing sidelong glance and rejoices within.

குறிக்கொண்டு நோக்காமை அல்லால் ஒருகண்
சிறக்கணித்தாள் போல நகும்

Could water-lilies see, they would bow to the ground in shame before her radiant eyes.

காணின் குவளை கவிழ்ந்து நிலன்நோக்கும்
மாணிழை கண்ணொவ்வேம் என்று

Unable to bear this torment, my body and soul discard all modesty to mount the horse.

நோனா உடம்பும் உயிரும் மடலேறும்

கரத்தலும் ஆற்றேன்இந் நோயைநோய் செய்தார்க்கு
உரைத்தலும் நாணுத் தரும்

Desire hangs at one end and restraint at the other, and my life is the pole between them — inside a body that has no strength to carry either.

காமமும் நாணும் உயிர்காவாத் தூங்கும்என்
நோனா உடம்பின் அகத்து
