To the renunciant, the destitute, and the lonely departed with no kin, the householder is the ultimate refuge and support.

இல்வாழ்வான் என்பான் துணை

To faithfully serve departed ancestors, the divine, guests, kin, and one's own household is the foremost duty of family life.

தென்புலத்தார் தெய்வம் விருந்தொக்கல் தானென்றாங்கு
ஐம்புலத்தாறு ஓம்பல் தலை

She who guards herself, cares for her partner, protects the family's good name, and never tires of virtue is the true woman.

தற்காத்துத் தற்கொண்டாற் பேணித் தகைசான்ற
சொற்காத்துச் சோர்விலாள் பெண்

Of what avail are all the outer limbs of the body to one who lacks that vital inner limb of the soul: love?

புறத்துறுப் பெல்லாம் எவன்செய்யும் யாக்கை
அகத்துறுப்பு அன்பி லவர்க்கு

Equity is standing impartial toward foe, stranger, and friend without letting relationship tilt conduct; maintaining that single upright balance is the highest good.

தகுதி எனவொன்று நன்றே பகுதியால்
பாற்பட்டு ஒழுகப் பெறின்

Hatred, sin, fear, and disgrace — these four never leave the man who violates another's home.

பகைபாவம் அச்சம் பழியென நான்கும்
இகவாவாம் இல்லிறப்பான் கண்

If asked what compassion is: it is non-killing. If asked what is opposed to it: it is killing. Therefore, eating the flesh produced by that killing is not morally right.

அருளல்ல தியாதெனிற் கொல்லாமை கோறல்
பொருளல்லது அவ்வூன் தினல்

The objects of the five senses must be subdued; everything acquired for enjoying them must be relinquished together.

அடல்வேண்டும் ஐந்தன் புலத்தை விடல்வேண்டும்
வேண்டிய வெல்லாம் ஒருங்கு

When desire, anger, and delusion—the three—vanish so completely that even their names disappear, the karmic suffering produced by them also ends.

காமம் வெகுளி மயக்கம் இவ்மூன்றன்
நாமம் கெடக்கெடும் நோய்

Among rulers, the one who possesses all six—defence, people, resources, ministers, allies, and fortification—is like a lion among them.

படைகுடி கூழ்அமைச்சு நட்பரண் ஆறும்
உடையான் அரசருள் ஏறு

Unfailing courage, generosity, wisdom, and purposeful energy—these four are the proper qualities of a ruler.

அஞ்சாமை ஈகை அறிவூக்கம் இந்நான்கும்
எஞ்சாமை வேந்தர்க் கியல்பு

Prompt action, learning, and resolute decision—these three must never leave the person who governs the land.

தூங்காமை கல்வி துணிவுடைமை இம்மூன்றும்
நீங்கா நிலனான் பவர்க்கு

True government does not depart from virtue, removes what is unjust, and possesses honour that does not fail in courage.

அறனிழுக்கா தல்லவை நீக்கி மறனிழுக்கா
மானம் உடைய தரசு

A capable ruler creates sources of revenue, gathers resources, safeguards what has been gathered, and distributes what was protected for proper purposes.

இயற்றலும் ஈட்டலுங் காத்தலும் காத்த
வகுத்தலும் வல்ல தரசு

Generosity, gracious concern, just rule, and care for the people—one who possesses all four is a light among rulers.

கொடையளி செங்கோல் குடியோம்பல் நான்கும்
உடையானாம் வேந்தர்க் கொளி

Numeracy and literacy are the two eyes of a life equipped to understand the world.

எண்ணென்ப ஏனை எழுத்தென்ப இவ்விரண்டும்
கண்ணென்ப வாழும் உயிர்க்கு

The prosperity of rulers free from arrogance, wrath, and degrading lust has the nature of dignified greatness.

செருக்குஞ் சினமும் சிறுமையும் இல்லார்
பெருக்கம் பெருமித நீர்த்து

For a ruler, refusing to give wealth when duty requires it, honor severed from excellence, and unmeasured delight are faults.

இவறலும் மாண்பிறந்த மானமும் மாணா
உவகையும் ஏதம் இறைக்கு

Act only after weighing the immediate loss, what may arise from it, and the profit the undertaking will yield along the way.

அழிவதூஉம் ஆவதூஉம் ஆகி வழிபயக்கும்
ஊதியமும் சூழ்ந்து செயல்

Weigh the strength of the task, one's own strength, the opponent's strength, and allies' strength before acting.

வினைவலியும் தன்வலியும் மாற்றான் வலியும்
துணைவலியும் தூக்கிச் செயல்

A person should be trusted only after their disposition has been examined through four tests: virtue, material gain, pleasure, and fear for life.

அறம்பொருள் இன்பம் உயிரச்சம் நான்கின்
திறந்தெரிந்து தேறப் படும்

In the classical claim, confidence rests only with one born into a high lineage, free from faults, and possessed of a conscience that fears disgrace.

குடிப்பிறந்து குற்றத்தின் நீங்கி வடுப்பரியும்
நாணுடையான் சுட்டே தெளிவு

Entrust the work to one who can broaden sources of revenue, grow the resulting resources, and continually identify and remove the obstacles that affect them.

வாரி பெருக்கி வளம்படுத்து உற்றவை
ஆராய்வான் செய்க வினை

Confidence belongs with one who steadily possesses these four: loyal affection toward the ruler, understanding of what benefits him, unwavering resolve in carrying it out, and freedom from greed when resources come into hand.

அன்பறிவு தேற்றம் அவாவின்மை இந்நான்கும்
நன்குடையான் கட்டே தெளிவு

Examine the doer and the work; then understand how both fit the proper time, and make the assignment only when all three are aligned.

செய்வானை நாடி வினைநாடிக் காலத்தோடு
எய்த உணர்ந்து செயல்

The right course is to investigate an offence, show no favoritism to anyone, remain impartial, consult those learned in the law about the prescribed penalty, and impose only that measure.

ஓர்ந்துகண் ணோடாது இறைபுரிந்து யார்மாட்டும்
தேர்ந்துசெய் வஃதே முறை

The covert intelligence agent and the renowned treatise on justice and statecraft—regard these two clearly as the king's eyes.

ஒற்றும் உரைசான்ற நூலும் இவையிரண்டும்
தெற்றென்க மன்னவன் கண்

A spy is one who investigates all three—the ruler's agents, his own circle, and those opposed to him—through their words and deeds.

வினைசெய்வார் தம்சுற்றம் வேண்டாதார் என்றாங்கு
அனைவரையும் ஆராய்வது ஒற்று

The true spy is one whose appearance arouses no suspicion, who does not fear a hostile gaze, and who can keep from divulging the secret under any pressure.

கடாஅ உருவொடு கண்ணஞ்சாது யாண்டும்
உகாஅமை வல்லதே ஒற்று

Delay, forgetfulness, sloth, and sleep are four desired boats for people disposed toward ruin.

நெடுநீர் மறவி மடிதுயில் நான்கும்
கெடுநீரார் காமக் கலன்

A true minister can judge together the means, the fitting time, the method, and the difficult undertaking to be carried out.

கருவியும் காலமும் செய்கையும் செய்யும்
அருவினையும் மாண்டது அமைச்சு

Ministerial excellence requires five joined strengths: firmness in action, protection of the people, learned discernment, energetic effort, and the practical competence already described.

வன்கண் குடிகாத்தல் கற்றறிதல் ஆள்வினையோடு
ஐந்துடன் மாண்டது அமைச்சு

A capable minister can detach an enemy's supporters, preserve existing allies, and reconcile those who have separated.

பிரித்தலும் பேணிக் கொளலும் பிரிந்தார்ப்
பொருத்தலும் வல்ல தமைச்சு

The discerning hold to a twofold path: avoid unsound undertakings, and, if a sound undertaking later meets an obstacle, do not lose heart.

ஊறொரால் உற்றபின் ஒல்காமை இவ்விரண்டின்
ஆறென்பர் ஆய்ந்தவர் கோள்

Consider resources, instruments, time, the action itself, and place—all five—until uncertainty is cleared, and then act.

பொருள்கருவி காலம் வினையிடனொடு ஐந்தும்
இருள்தீர எண்ணிச் செயல்

Weigh the effort required for completion, the obstacles, and the great benefit reached after those obstacles are overcome; then act.

முடிவும் இடையூறும் முற்றியாங்கு எய்தும்
படுபயனும் பார்த்துச் செயல்

For an envoy, the classical qualities are loyal affection, birth in a lineage fitted for ministry, and the character rulers desire. A modern representative should be chosen for demonstrated care, competence, and integrity—not ancestry.

அன்புடைமை ஆன்ற குடிப்பிறத்தல் வேந்தவாம்
பண்புடைமை தூதுரைப்பான் பண்பு

Love, intelligence about what benefits one's ruler, and strength in carefully considered speech—these three are indispensable to an envoy.

அன்பறிவு ஆராய்ந்த சொல்வன்மை தூதுரைப்பார்க்கு
இன்றி யமையாத மூன்று

Let the person in whom natural intelligence, a pleasing or commanding presence, and deeply examined learning converge go on the mission. The appearance standard is classical; modern fitness must never depend on beauty, body, race, disability, or conformity.

அறிவுரு வாராய்ந்த கல்விஇம் மூன்றன்
செறிவுடையான் செல்க வினைக்கு

An envoy is learned, unafraid before an angry gaze, able to make the message land, and able to discern the means fitting to the time.

கற்றுக்கண் அஞ்சான் செலச்சொல்லிக் காலத்தால்
தக்கது அறிவதாம் தூது

Foremost among envoys is the one who knows the duty, considers the time, understands the fitting place, thinks through the wording, and then delivers the message.

கடனறிந்து காலங் கருதி இடனறிந்து
எண்ணி உரைப்பான் தலை

Purity from corrupting desire, support, resolve, and truthfulness belong to the envoy who speaks faithfully along the entrusted line.

தூய்மை துணைமை துணிவுடைமை இம்மூன்றின்
வாய்மை வழியுரைப்பான் பண்பு

In the presence of an eminent ruler, refrain from whispering privately into another's ear and from exchanged laughter.

செவிச்சொல்லும் சேர்ந்த நகையும் அவித்தொழுகல்
ஆன்ற பெரியா ரகத்து

A country is where producers of unfailing yield, people worthy through virtue, and possessors of wealth without decline live together.

தள்ளா விளையுளும் தக்காரும் தாழ்விலாச்
செல்வரும் சேர்வது நாடு

A country functions well when severe hunger, unceasing disease, and destructive external enmity do not take hold.

உறுபசியும் ஓவாப் பிணியும் செறுபகையும்
சேரா தியல்வது நாடு

A country is free of ruinous factions, internal enmity that wastes it from within, and violent bands that unsettle its ruler.

பல்குழுவும் பாழ்செய்யும் உட்பகையும் வேந்தலைக்கும்
கொல்குறும்பும் இல்லது நாடு

Groundwater and surface water, a fitting mountain, water flowing from it, and a strong fort are constituent parts of a country.

இருபுனலும் வாய்ந்த மலையும் வருபுனலும்
வல்லரணும் நாட்டிற்கு உறுப்பு

Freedom from pervasive disease, wealth, productive yield, joy, and security are the five ornaments of a country.

பிணியின்மை செல்வம் விளைவின்பம் ஏமம்

A fort possesses gem-clear water, open ground, a mountain, and forest with beautiful cool shade.

மணிநீரும் மண்ணும் மலையும் அணிநிழற்

Military treatises declare that a fort must combine four qualities: height, breadth, solidity, and difficulty of access.

உயர்வகலம் திண்மை அருமைஇந் நான்கின்
அமைவரண் என்றுரைக்கும் நூல்

A fort is difficult for outsiders to capture, contains ample food provisions, and makes it practicable for those within to maintain their defensive positions.

கொளற்கரிதாய்க் கொண்டகூழ்த் தாகி அகத்தார்
நிலைக்கெளிதாம் நீரது அரண்

A fort is hard to capture by close encirclement, by a concentrated assault without full surrounding, or by covertly inducing those within to open it.

முற்றியும் முற்றா தெறிந்தும் அறைப்படுத்தும்
பற்றற் கரியது அரண்

Three historical royal revenues are classified separately: ownerless property accruing to the ruler, customs revenue, and tribute obtained from opponents.

உறுபொருளும் உல்கு பொருளும்தன் ஒன்னார்த்
தெறுபொருளும் வேந்தன் பொருள்

That alone is a true army which is not destroyed in battle, cannot be undermined or bought away by the enemy, and possesses hardiness carried through long continuity.

அழிவின்றி அறைபோகா தாகி வழிவந்த
வன்க ணதுவே படை

Courage, honour, following the proven path, and the ruler's confidence in the force—these four alone are protections for an army.

மறமானம் மாண்ட வழிச்செலவு தேற்றம்
எனநான்கே ஏமம் படைக்கு

An army will prevail if it is free from three distinct deficits: shrinkage in numbers, persistent inward resentment, and poverty of supplies.

சிறுமையும் செல்லாத் துனியும் வறுமையும்
இல்லாயின் வெல்லும் படை

Friendship turns a person away from ruinous courses, guides that person onto a good path, and shares the suffering when unavoidable adversity arrives.

அழிவி னவைநீக்கி ஆறுய்த்து அழிவின்கண்
அல்லல் உழப்பதாம் நட்பு

Know a person's character, lineage, faults, and unfailing circle of kin, and then form friendship.

குணமும் குடிமையும் குற்றமும் குன்றா
இனனும் அறிந்தியாக்க நட்பு

Folly’s pattern is to feel no shame where shame is due, seek none of what should be sought, break human bonds through word and deed, and care for nothing worthy of care.

நாணாமை நாடாமை நாரின்மை யாதொன்றும்
பேணாமை பேதை தொழில்

Without affection for one’s circle, without strong support, and without strength oneself, how can one repel an enemy’s force?

அன்பிலன் ஆன்ற துணையிலன் தான்துவ்வான்
என்பரியும் ஏதிலான் துப்பு

One who fears what need not be feared, does not learn what must be known, lacks accord, and will not give becomes easy for an enemy to overcome.

அஞ்சும் அறியான் அமைவிலன் ஈகலான்
தஞ்சம் எளியன் பகைக்கு

One who does not consult the right path, does not perform fitting actions, does not consider blame, and lacks cultivated conduct makes enmity pleasant to opponents.

வழிநோக்கான் வாய்ப்பன செய்யான் பழிநோக்கான்
பண்பிலன் பற்றார்க்கு இனிது

Virtuous deeds, abundant wealth, and noble pleasures are absent in those who slavishly obey their wives.

அறவினையும் ஆன்ற பொருளும் பிறவினையும்
பெண்ஏவல் செய்வார்கண் இல்

Double-minded women, intoxicating liquor, and gambling are the companions of those abandoned by fortune.

இருமனப் பெண்டிரும் கள்ளும் கவறும்
திருநீக்கப் பட்டார் தொடர்பு

Those who doted on the dice, the gaming den, and their skillful hand have ended in utter poverty.

கவறும் கழகமும் கையும் தருக்கி
இவறியார் இல்லாகி யார்

Gambling ruins wealth, leads to falsehood, strips away compassion, and plunges one into misery.

பொருள்கெடுத்துப் பொய்மேற் கொளீஇ அருள்கெடுத்து
அல்லல் உழப்பிக்கும் சூது

Clothing, wealth, food, renown, and learning: all five will elude the one who takes to gambling.

உடைசெல்வம் ஊண்ஒளி கல்விஎன்று ஐந்தும்
அடையாவாம் ஆயங் கொளின்

Diagnose the ailment, seek its root cause, determine the cure, and apply the remedy with precision.

நோய்நாடி நோய்முதல் நாடி அதுதணிக்கும்
வாய்நாடி வாய்ப்பச் செயல்

The learned physician should weigh the patient's constitution, the severity of the illness, and the season, and then treat.

உற்றான் அளவும் பிணியளவும் காலமும்
கற்றான் கருதிச் செயல்

Healing comprises four parts: the patient, the physician, the medicine, and the attendant.

உற்றவன் தீர்ப்பான் மருந்துழைச் செல்வானென்று
அப்பால் நாற்கூற்றே மருந்து

Upright integrity and modesty dwell naturally together only in those of noble heritage.

இற்பிறந்தார் கண்அல்லது இல்லை இயல்பாகச்
செப்பமும் நாணும் ஒருங்கு

Good conduct, truthfulness, and modesty: these three are never compromised by the noble-born.

ஒழுக்கமும் வாய்மையும் நாணும்இம் மூன்றும்
இழுக்கார் குடிப்பிறந் தார்

A pleasant smile, generous giving, kind speech, and contempt for none: these four distinguish the noble.

நகைஈகை இன்சொல் இகழாமை நான்கும்
வகையென்ப வாய்மைக் குடிக்கு

Love, modesty, helpful benevolence, compassionate regard, and truthfulness: these five are the pillars of noble character.

அன்புநாண் ஒப்புரவு கண்ணோட்டம் வாய்மையொடு
ஐந்துசால் ஊன்றிய தூண்

Having love for all and being born into a noble family are the two marks of true character.

அன்புடைமை ஆன்ற குடிப்பிறத்தல் இவ்விரண்டும்
பண்புடைமை என்னும் வழக்கு

Denying oneself, shunning loved ones, and ignoring virtue to hoard wealth will only leave it for strangers to take.

அன்பொரீஇத் தற்செற்று அறநோக்காது ஈட்டிய
ஒண்பொருள் கொள்வார் பிறர்

Within the single misery of poverty, all other forms of suffering gather and take root.

நல்குரவு என்னும் இடும்பையுள் பல்குரைத்
துன்பங்கள் சென்று படும்

Is she a goddess, a rare peacock, or a mortal maid? My heart stands utterly bewildered.

அணங்குகொல் ஆய்மயில் கொல்லோ கனங்குழை
மாதர்கொல் மாலும்என் நெஞ்சு

Is it death, an eye, or a startled doe? The young maid's glance holds the nature of all three.

கூற்றமோ கண்ணோ பிணையோ மடவரல்
நோக்கமிம் மூன்றும் உடைத்து

The gaze of her kohl-lined eyes has two powers: one glance causes love's ache, the other cures it.

இருநோக்கு இவளுண்கண் உள்ளது ஒருநோக்கு
நோய்நோக்கொன் றந்நோய் மருந்து

All delights of sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch unite within this bright-jeweled maiden.

கண்டுகேட்டு உண்டுயிர்த்து உற்றறியும் ஐம்புலனும்
ஒண்தொடி கண்ணே உள

A playful spat, tender reconciliation, and reunion — these are the sweetest fruits of true love.

ஊடல் உணர்தல் புணர்தல் இவைகாமம்
கூடியார் பெற்ற பயன்

Her skin is like a tender shoot, teeth like pearls, scent pure fragrance, and eyes like spears.

முறிமேனி முத்தம் முறுவல் வெறிநாற்றம்
வேலுண்கண் வேய்த்தோ ளவட்கு

When the one who is dear to me as my own eyes comes back, shall I hold off in displeasure, or shall I take hold of him, or shall I somehow do both at once?

புலப்பேன்கொல் புல்லுவேன் கொல்லோ கலப்பேன்கொல்
கண்அன்ன கேளிர் விரன்

She looked at her bangle, then at her soft shoulders, then at her feet. That was what she did there - and that was the message.

தொடிநோக்கி மென்தோளும் நோக்கி அடிநோக்கி
அஃதாண் டவள்செய் தது

To be elated by the mere thought of them, and gladdened by the mere sight: palm wine has neither of these. Love has both.
