Trailing behind those who despise you brings no fame here nor bliss hereafter; what then is its use?

புகழ்இன்றால் புத்தேள்நாட்டு உய்யாதால் என்மற்று
இகழ்வார்பின் சென்று நிலை

Far better is it to be said that one perished on the spot than to live begging behind those who despise him.

ஒட்டார்பின் சென்றொருவன் வாழ்தலின் அந்நிலையே
கெட்டான் எனப்படுதல் நன்று

When noble dignity and honor are lost, is clinging to mere bodily survival an elixir of life?

மருந்தோமற்று ஊன்ஓம்பும் வாழ்க்கை பெருந்தகைமை
பீடழிய வந்த இடத்து

If worldly eminence falls to those devoid of virtue, it produces only arrogant excess.

இறப்பே புரிந்த தொழிற்றாம் சிறப்புந்தான்
சீரல் லவர்கண் படின்

Moral conscience is an ornament to the noble; without it, their proud bearing is an eyesore.

அணிஅன்றோ நாணுடைமை சான்றோர்க்கு அஃதின்றேல்
பிணிஅன்றோ பீடு நடை

Those raising a family cannot wait for opportune times; indulging sloth and pride only ruins the home.

குடிசெய்வார்க் கில்லை பருவம் மடிசெய்து
மானங் கருதக் கெடும்

One may ask help from those worthy of asking; if they refuse, the blame is theirs alone.

இரக்க இரத்தக்கார்க் காணின் கரப்பின்
அவர்பழி தம்பழி அன்று

The dignified poise that refuses to beg even in utter destitution is grander than the whole world.

இடமெல்லாம் கொள்ளாத் தகைத்தே இடமில்லாக்
காலும் இரவொல்லாச் சால்பு

At the first sign of trouble, the base will hastily sell themselves into slavery; what else are they good for?

எற்றிற் குரியர் கயவரொன்று உற்றக்கால்
விற்றற்கு உரியர் விரைந்து

Modesty and manliness were once mine; now I hold only the palmyra horse of desperate lovers.

நாணொடு நல்லாண்மை பண்டுடையேன் இன்றுடையேன்
காமுற்றார் ஏறும் மடல்

The raging flood of love swept away the raft of modesty and dignity I counted on.

காமக் கடும்புனல் உய்க்கும் நாணொடு
நல்லாண்மை என்னும் புணை

How very gracious of it: the grief that has come upon me wants nothing except that I should go after the one who cut me off.

செற்றவர் பின்சேறல் வேண்டி அளித்தரோ
எற்றென்னை உற்ற துயர்
