அழுக்காறு உடையார்க்கு அதுசாலும் ஒன்னார்
வழுக்காயும் கேடீன் பது

If a person could see his own faults as clearly as he sees an enemy's, would any evil ever come to his enduring life?

தீதுண்டோ மன்னும் உயிர்க்கு

A capable minister can detach an enemy's supporters, preserve existing allies, and reconcile those who have separated.

Even after learning many good teachings, those who continue to choose hostility rarely become good-hearted through learning alone.

பலநல்ல கற்றக் கடைத்து மனநல்லர்
ஆகுதல் மாணார்க் கரிது

Even when an opponent speaks helpful words like a friend, what those words truly serve soon becomes clear.

நட்டார்போல் நல்லவை சொல்லினும் ஒட்டார்சொல்
ஒல்லை உணரப் படும்

Do not take an enemy’s deferential words as goodwill: the bow’s bend, too, is directed toward harm.

Hostility toward one blinded by rage and possessed by ever-growing desire will be eagerly chosen.

பேணாமை பேணப் படும்

Even at some cost, one should surely take up opposition to a person who has begun an undertaking yet keeps doing what is unfit for it.

கொடுத்தும் கொளல்வேண்டும் மன்ற அடுத்திருந்து
மாணாத செய்வான் பகை

If one has no cultivated virtue and many faults, one will be left without allies; that very lack becomes strength for opponents.

குணனிலனாய்க் குற்றம் பலவாயின் மாற்றார்க்கு
இனனிலனாம் ஏமாப் புடைத்து

If one meets an enemy ignorant of justice and fearful, the lofty advantage of those opposing that enemy will not depart.

செறுவார்க்குச் சேணிகவா இன்பம் அறிவிலா
அஞ்சும் பகைவர்ப் பெறின்

Renown will never attach to one who refuses the easy gain available in opposing an unlearned and angry adversary.

கல்லான் வெகுளும் சிறுபொருள் எஞ்ஞான்றும்
ஒல்லானை ஒல்லா தொளி

Hostility has no good quality; one should not desire it even in play.

பகைஎன்னும் பண்பி லதனை ஒருவன்
நகையேயும் வேண்டற்பாற்று அன்று

Though one may oppose those who plough with the bow, one should not make enemies of those who plough with words.

வில்லேர் உழவர் பகைகொளினும் கொள்ளற்க
சொல்லேர் உழவர் பகை

One who stands entirely alone yet takes on a multitude of foes is more foolish than the most bewildered of madmen.

Even shade and water become painful when they cause illness; so do the qualities of intimates when their conduct causes harm.

Do not fear the enemy who stands openly like a sword; beware the association of an enemy who appears like kin.

Guard yourself against internal enmity; in a moment of weakness it will destroy unerringly, like the potter’s tool that cuts the clay vessel free.

உட்பகை அஞ்சித்தற் காக்க உலைவிடத்து
மட்பகையின் மாணத் தெறும்

If internal enmity arises from a mind not truly in accord, it brings many faults that estrange one’s own circle.

மனமாணா உட்பகை தோன்றின் இனமாணா
ஏதம் பலவும் தரும்

If internal enmity arises under the guise of kinship, it brings countless perils extending even to mortal ruin.

உறல்முறையான் உட்பகை தோன்றின் இறல்முறையான்
ஏதம் பலவும் தரும்

If hostility arises among those joined to him, it is always difficult for a ruler to escape death.

ஒன்றாமை ஒன்றியார் கட்படின் எஞ்ஞான்றும்
பொன்றாமை ஒன்றல் அரிது

Though it may appear joined like a metal container fitted with its lid, a household possessed by internal enmity is not truly united.

செப்பின் புணர்ச்சிபோல் கூடினும் கூடாதே
உட்பகை உற்ற குடி

A household afflicted by internal enmity has its strength worn away, as iron is worn down by the file that rubs against it.

அரம்பொருத பொன்போலத் தேயும் உரம்பொருது
உட்பகை உற்ற குடி

Though internal enmity be as small as a split sesame seed, the ruin of an entire greatness lies within it.

எட்பக வன்ன சிறுமைத்தே ஆயினும்
உட்பகை உள்ளதாங் கேடு

Life with those who lack true concord is like dwelling together with a snake inside one hut.

உடம்பாடு இலாதவர் வாழ்க்கை குடங்கருள்
பாம்போடு உடனுறைந் தற்று

Those who live enslaved by love of intoxicants inspire no awe and lose all honor.

உட்கப் படாஅர் ஒளியிழப்பர் எஞ்ஞான்றும்
கட்காதல் கொண்டொழுகு வார்

The strength of the capable is humility; and that is the weapon with which the noble disarm foes.

ஆற்றுவார் ஆற்றல் பணிதல் அதுசான்றோர்
மாற்றாரை மாற்றும் படை

Mockery hurts even in jest; those who understand others show gracious courtesy even toward foes.

நகையுள்ளும் இன்னா திகழ்ச்சி பகையுள்ளும்
பண்புள பாடறிவார் மாட்டு

To withhold gracious courtesy even from those who show hostility is the lowest failure for the wise.

நண்பாற்றார் ஆகி நயமில செய்வார்க்கும்
பண்பாற்றார் ஆதல் கடை

They can bring sorrow into a friendship, which exists to give pleasure. What will they be, then, where hostility is the whole point of it?

துப்பின் எவனாவர் மன்கொல் துயர்வரவு
நட்பினுள் ஆற்று பவர்

With the one I love not here, evening comes the way strangers come into a killing-ground — with no bond to me at all, and with my life as its errand.

காதலர் இல்வழி மாலை கொலைக்களத்து
ஏதிலர் போல வரும்

What kindness did I ever do the morning? And what wrong did I do the evening, that it should treat me as an enemy?

காலைக்குச் செய்தநன்று என்கொல் எவன்கொல்யான்
மாலைக்குச் செய்த பகை?

Heart, have we it in us to call him an enemy and let him go — the man who does not draw near, though we do?
