Discernment

One who guards the five senses with the goad of firm wisdom becomes a seed for the supreme realm of liberation.

உரனென்னும் தோட்டியான் ஓரைந்தும் காப்பான்
வரனென்னும் வைப்பிற்கோர் வித்து

The true nature of the world endures within the deep comprehension of the sage who discerns the five senses: taste, sight, touch, sound, and smell.

சுவைஒளி ஊறுஓசை நாற்றமென ஐந்தின்
வகைதெரிவான் கட்டே உலகு

Among all treasures one may acquire in life, there is no greater blessing than raising children endowed with true discernment and wisdom.

பெறுமவற்றுள் யாமறிவது இல்லை அறிவறிந்த
மக்கட்பேறு அல்ல பிற

That one's children possess greater wisdom than oneself brings delight not merely to the parents, but to every living soul on earth.

தம்மின்தம் மக்கள் அறிவுடைமை மாநிலத்து
மன்னுயிர்க் கெல்லாம் இனிது

The words of those who have realized righteous truth are pleasant, drenched in genuine love, and free from deceit.

இன்சொலால் ஈரம் அளைஇப் படிறுஇலவாம்
செம்பொருள் கண்டார்வாய்ச் சொல்

The wise never do wrong out of envy, because they know the suffering that wrong path brings on them.

அழுக்காற்றின் அல்லவை செய்யார் இழுக்காற்றின்
ஏதம் படுபாக்கு அறிந்து

Fortune seeks out, of her own accord, the wise who know what is right and never covet — she finds the way to their door.

அறனறிந்து வெஃகா அறிவுடையார்ச் சேரும்
திறன்அறிந் தாங்கே திரு

A person's own extended, pointless speech announces that the speaker lacks right judgment.

நயனிலன் என்பது சொல்லும் பயனில
பாரித் துரைக்கும் உரை

Those whose minds weigh rare, deep purposes will not utter words empty of any real benefit.

அரும்பயன் ஆயும் அறிவினார் சொல்லார்
பெரும்பயன் இல்லாத சொல்

The pure and clear-sighted, free of all delusion, will not speak a pointless word even by a slip.

பொருள்தீர்ந்த பொச்சாந்துஞ் சொல்லார் மருள்தீர்ந்த
மாசறு காட்சி யவர்

To refrain from retaliating with evil even toward enemies who deliberately seek one's ruin is hailed as the supreme crown of all wisdom.

அறிவினுள் எல்லாந் தலையென்ப தீய
செறுவார்க்கும் செய்யா விடல்

Discern the good path and cultivate universal compassion; examine life through every philosophy, and compassion alone remains your ultimate support.

நல்லாற்றாள் நாடி அருளாள்க பல்லாற்றால்
தேரினும் அஃதே துணை

Those whose discernment is freed from the fault of delusion do not eat flesh separated from life.

செயிரின் தலைப்பிரிந்த காட்சியார் உண்ணார்
உயிரின் தலைப்பிரிந்த ஊன்

Because austerity is believed to yield each desired result in the desired way, wise people undertake it here in this life.

வேண்டிய வேண்டியாங் கெய்தலால் செய்தவம்
ஈண்டு முயலப் படும்

An arrow is straight yet cruel in effect; a lute is curved yet produces what is good. Likewise, understand people by the character of their actions.

கணைகொடிது யாழ்கோடு செவ்விதுஆங் கன்ன
வினைபடு பாலால் கொளல்

Those whose desire is deeply fixed on theft cannot live by the measured discernment of soul, moral consequence, and liberation.

அளவின்கண் நின்றொழுகல் ஆற்றார் களவின்கண்
கன்றிய காத லவர்

The dark intelligence called theft is absent in those who seek the strength called measured discernment.

களவென்னும் காரறி வாண்மை அளவென்னும்
ஆற்றல் புரிந்தார்கண்ட இல்

Not every lamp is a lamp to the wise; the lamp that does not lie is their true light.

எல்லா விளக்கும் விளக்கல்ல சான்றோர்க்குப்
பொய்யா விளக்கே விளக்கு

What use is knowledge if it does not lead one to guard another being's pain as carefully as one's own?

அறிவினான் ஆகுவ துண்டோ பிறிதின்நோய்
தந்நோய்போல் போற்றாக் கடை

Whatever a thing may be and however it appears, wisdom is seeing the true reality within that thing rather than stopping at its appearance.

எப்பொருள் எத்தன்மைத் தாயினும் அப்பொருள்
மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்பது அறிவு

When loss-producing destiny arrives, it makes understanding foolish; when gain-producing destiny arrives, it expands understanding.

பேதைப் படுக்கும் இழவூழ் அறிவகற்றும்
ஆகலூழ் உற்றக் கடை

The world's nature has two distinct courses: the destiny for wealth is one, and becoming clear-minded is another.

இருவேறு உலகத்து இயற்கை திருவேறு
தெள்ளிய ராதலும் வேறு

Unfailing courage, generosity, wisdom, and purposeful energy—these four are the proper qualities of a ruler.

அஞ்சாமை ஈகை அறிவூக்கம் இந்நான்கும்
எஞ்சாமை வேந்தர்க் கியல்பு

As water rises in a sandy well in proportion to the digging, understanding rises in people in proportion to their learning.

தொட்டனைத் தூறும் மணற்கேணி மாந்தர்க்குக்
கற்றனைத் தூறும் அறிவு

However excellent an unlearned person's subtle insight may be, the learned do not accept it as cultivated understanding.

கல்லாதான் ஒட்பம் கழியநன் றாயினும்
கொள்ளார் அறிவுடை யார்

Those whose listening has accumulated through careful discernment will not voice a foolish claim, even when they have first understood something incorrectly.

பிழைத்துணர்ந்தும் பேதைமை சொல்லா ரிழைத்துணர்ந்
தீண்டிய கேள்வி யவர்

Wisdom is the instrument that guards against ruin and an inner fortress that even enemies cannot destroy.

அறிவற்றங் காக்குங் கருவி செறுவார்க்கும்
உள்ளழிக்க லாகா அரண்

Wisdom does not let the mind continue wherever it has wandered; examining harm and benefit, it draws the mind away from evil and guides it toward good.

சென்ற இடத்தால் செலவிடா தீதொரீஇ
நன்றின்பால் உய்ப்ப தறிவு

Whatever the matter and whoever speaks it, wisdom is discerning that matter's true substance and real import.

எப்பொருள் யார்யார்வாய்க் கேட்பினும் அப்பொருள்
மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்ப தறிவு

Wisdom expresses even difficult ideas so that they become easy to grasp, and discerns subtle meaning in the words of others.

எண்பொருள வாகச் செலச்சொல்லித் தான்பிறர்வாய்
நுண்பொருள் காண்ப தறிவு

Wisdom embraces the world in friendship and remains steady there, neither first blooming nor later closing like a flower.

உலகம் தழீஇய தொட்பம் மலர்தலும்
கூம்பலும் இல்ல தறிவு

Wisdom is conducting oneself with the world in the manner by which the world itself lives.

எவ்வ துறைவது உலகம் உலகத்தோடு
அவ்வ துறைவ தறிவு

Those who possess understanding know what is to come; those without it cannot know that beforehand.

அறிவுடையார் ஆவ தறிவார் அறிவிலார்
அஃதறி கல்லா தவர்

Not fearing what ought to be feared is folly; fearing what deserves fear is the conduct of the knowledgeable.

அஞ்சுவ தஞ்சாமை பேதைமை அஞ்சுவது
அஞ்சல் அறிவார் தொழில்

No suffering arrives to make those with foresight tremble when they understand what is coming and protect against it in advance.

எதிரதாக் காக்கும் அறிவினார்க் கில்லை
அதிர வருவதோர் நோய்

Those with understanding possess everything; those without understanding possess nothing, whatever else they may own.

அறிவுடையார் எல்லா முடையார் அறிவிலார்
என்னுடைய ரேனும் இலர்

Examine and choose the friendship of elders in wisdom who understand virtue, knowing both their worth and how to sustain that bond.

அறனறிந்து மூத்த அறிவுடையார் கேண்மை
திறனறிந்து தேர்ந்து கொளல்

As water changes according to the ground it joins, human understanding takes on the character of close association.

நிலத்தியல்பால் நீர்திரிந் தற்றாகும் மாந்தர்க்கு
இனத்தியல்ப தாகும் அறிவு

Understanding appears to reside in one's own mind, yet it is truly formed within the company one keeps.

மனத்து ளதுபோலக் காட்டி ஒருவற்கு
இனத்துள தாகும் அறிவு

Even in doing good there is error if one does not understand each person's disposition and act in a way fitted to it.

நன்றாற்ற லுள்ளுந் தவுறுண்டு அவரவர்
பண்பறிந் தாற்றாக் கடை

One who weighs both benefit and harm, and whose disposition chooses what is good, should be entrusted with responsibility.

நன்மையும் தீமையும் நாடி நலம்புரிந்த
தன்மையான் ஆளப் படும்

Even when troubles swell like a flood, a discerning mind can regard and contain them clearly; they then lose their power to overwhelm the inner life.

வெள்ளத் தனைய இடும்பை அறிவுடையான்
உள்ளத்தின் உள்ளக் கெடும்

Knowing that embodied life is exposed to pain, the discerning do not make panic their only response when hardship arrives.

இலக்கம் உடம்பிடும்பைக் கென்று கலக்கத்தைக்
கையாறாக் கொள்ளாதாம் மேல்

What exceedingly subtle scheme can stand before a counsellor whose natural acuity is joined with learned knowledge?

மதிநுட்பம் நூலோடு உடையார்க்கு அதிநுட்பம்
யாவுள முன்நிற் பவை

Know the capacities of speaker and hearer, then speak fittingly; no virtue or gain surpasses such speech.

திறனறிந்து சொல்லுக சொல்லை அறனும்
பொருளும் அதனினூஉங்கு இல்

Love, intelligence about what benefits one's ruler, and strength in carefully considered speech—these three are indispensable to an envoy.

அன்பறிவு ஆராய்ந்த சொல்வன்மை தூதுரைப்பார்க்கு
இன்றி யமையாத மூன்று

Let the person in whom natural intelligence, a pleasing or commanding presence, and deeply examined learning converge go on the mission. The appearance standard is classical; modern fitness must never depend on beauty, body, race, disability, or conformity.

அறிவுரு வாராய்ந்த கல்விஇம் மூன்றன்
செறிவுடையான் செல்க வினைக்கு

One who reads an unspoken intention by observing its signs is, at all times, an ornament to the world encircled by the unfailing sea.

கூறாமை நோக்கக் குறிப்பறிவான் எஞ்ஞான்றும்
மாறாநீர் வையக் கணி

Regard as equal to the divine the person who understands, without uncertainty, what lies within another's mind.

ஐயப் படாஅது அகத்தது உணர்வானைத்
தெய்வத்தோ டொப்பக் கொளல்

Though alike in bodily form, those who grasp an intended thought before it is spoken are different in intelligence from those who cannot.

குறித்தது கூறாமைக் கொள்வாரோ டேனை
உறுப்போ ரனையரால் வேறு

On examination, ministers who call themselves discerning have no measuring rod other than their eyes for gauging a ruler's intention.

நுண்ணியம் என்பார் அளக்குங்கோல் காணுங்கால்
கண்ணல்லது இல்லை பிற

Before the discerning, show discernment; before those unable to receive such depth, take on the plain colour of white plaster.

ஒளியார்முன் ஒள்ளிய ராதல் வெளியார்முன்
வான்சுதை வண்ணம் கொளல்

Speaking before people who possess understanding is like pouring water into the bed of a plant already growing.

உணர்வ துடையார்முன் சொல்லல் வளர்வதன்
பாத்தியுள் நீர்சொரிந் தற்று

Friendship among people of sound judgement grows fuller day by day, like the waxing crescent; friendship among the unreflective wanes day by day, like the moon after it is full.

நிறைநீர நீரவர் கேண்மை பிறைமதிப்
பின்னீர பேதையார் நட்பு

If an established friend acts without asking through affectionate familiarity, people of discernment will welcome the act because it is genuinely desirable.

விழைதகையான் வேண்டி இருப்பர் கெழுதகையாற்
கேளாது நட்டார் செயின்

The estrangement of a discerning person is ten million times better than intimate friendship with one acting in practical folly.

பேதை பெருங்கெழீஇ நட்பின் அறிவுடையார்
ஏதின்மை கோடி உறும்

What is the clearest form of folly? Choosing what brings harm and letting go of what brings benefit.

பேதைமை என்பதொன்று யாதெனின் ஏதங்கொண்டு
ஊதியம் போக விடல்

Among all forms of deprivation, lack of wisdom is the deepest; the world does not reckon lack of other possessions as true poverty.

அறிவின்மை இன்மையுள் இன்மை பிறிதின்மை
இன்மையா வையா துலகு

One who obstinately denies what enlightened society affirms as real is regarded on earth as nothing better than a phantom.

உலகத்தார் உண்டென்பது இல்லென்பான் வையத்து
அலகையா வைக்கப் படும்

Those whose harmful judgment clings to hostility cannot see the true and just principle that leads to victory.

மிகல்மேவல் மெய்ப்பொருள் காணார் இகல்மேவல்
இன்னா அறிவி னவர்

Those whose minds are anchored in thoughtful deliberation and broad vision will never succumb to foolish infatuation.

எண்சேர்ந்த நெஞ்சத் திடனுடையார்க்கு எஞ்ஞான்றும்
பெண்சேர்ந்தாம் பேதைமை இல்

Those endowed with discernment who seek spiritual grace will never touch the shallow pleasures of mercenary women.

பொருட்பொருளார் புன்னலந் தோயார் அருட்பொருள்
ஆயும் அறிவி னவர்

Those graced with lofty wisdom and deep discernment will never seek the shallow pleasures of public women.

பொதுநலத்தார் புன்னலம் தோயார் மதிநலத்தின்
மாண்ட அறிவி னவர்

To those lacking discerning wisdom, the embrace of deceitful women is like the fatal grasp of a destructive enchantress.

ஆயும் அறிவினர் அல்லார்க்கு அணங்கென்ப
மாய மகளிர் முயக்கு

Drink not intoxicants; let only those drink who do not care to be esteemed by the wise.

உண்ணற்க கள்ளை உணில்உண்க சான்றோரான்
எண்ணப் படவேண்டா தார்

Though their intellect be sharp as a file, those who lack human kindness are like lifeless wood.

அரம்போலும் கூர்மைய ரேனும் மரம்போல்வர்
மக்கட்பண்பு இல்லா தவர்

A family rises to greatness through continuous effort combined with mature wisdom.

ஆள்வினையும் ஆன்ற அறிவும் எனஇரண்டின்
நீள்வினையால் நீளும் குடி

The base seem luckier than the wise, for no moral conscience ever troubles their mind.

நன்றறி வாரிற் கயவர் திருவுடையர்
நெஞ்சத்து அவலம் இலர்
