About this chapter

On choices that embrace harm, discard benefit, and reveal practical folly without treating education, disability, or human worth as defects.

Verse 831 defines the subject in one clause and it is behavioural, not intellectual: folly is choosing what brings harm and letting go of what brings benefit. Nothing about capacity, schooling or wit. It is about which of two available things you reached for.

Verse 834 names the version of it that catches educated people. Nobody is more foolish than the person who studies restraint, understands it, explains it to others, and does not practise it. Being able to teach the thing is treated as an aggravation, not a defence.

Verse 838 is the sharpest observation here and it has aged well: give a person already ruled by confused judgement one more possession or scrap of power, and the confusion grows like intoxication. And 837 shows the effect on everybody nearby — when a foolish person comes into great wealth, unrelated people eat their fill while those who depend on them go without. Take this chapter to be about specific choices, never as a comment on anybody's education, disability or mental health.
