The Possession of Decorum
The fourteenth chapter, ஒழுக்கம் உடைமை — 'the possession of right conduct.' Self-control makes it possible; here Valluvar shows what it builds. Because good conduct brings honour to everyone, he says, it is to be guarded even above life itself — search as you will, you will find no surer ally. Conduct, not birth, is the real nobility: lapse from it and even high standing decays, while holding to it lifts the low. A forgotten scripture can be learned again, but a character once let fall is harder to recover. The firm-minded never slacken their conduct, knowing the disgrace a slip invites; good conduct is the seed of every good, bad conduct the mother of endless ills. Those of true breeding cannot utter a cruel word even by accident — and whoever has not learned to live in tune with the world's good people, however much else they have studied, has not really learned at all.

ஒழுக்கம் விழுப்பம் தரலான் ஒழுக்கம்
உயிரினும் ஓம்பப் படும்.

“The envious soul in life no rich increase of blessing gains, / So man of 'due decorum' void no dignity obtains.”
ஒழுக்கத்தின் ஒல்கார் உரவோர் இழுக்கத்தின்
ஏதம் படுபாக்கு அறிந்து.
“The strong of soul no jot abate of 'strict decorum's' laws, / Knowing that 'due decorum's' breach foulest disgrace will cause.”
ஒழுக்கத்தின் எய்துவர் மேன்மை இழுக்கத்தின்
எய்துவர் எய்தாப் பழி.
“'Tis source of dignity when 'true decorum' is preserved; / Who break 'decorum's' rules endure e'en censures undeserved.”
நன்றிக்கு வித்தாகும் நல்லொழுக்கம் தீயொழுக்கம்
என்றும் இடும்பை தரும்.
“'Decorum true' observed a seed of good will be; / 'Decorum's breach' will sorrow yield eternally.”

கல்லார் அறிவிலா தார்.
