To the renunciant, the destitute, and the lonely departed with no kin, the householder is the ultimate refuge and support.

துறந்தார்க்கும் துவ்வா தவர்க்கும் இறந்தார்க்கும்
இல்வாழ்வான் என்பான் துணை

The life of one who hospitably honors guests each day will never suffer misery or fall into ruin.

வருவிருந்து வைகலும் ஓம்புவான் வாழ்க்கை
பருவந்து பாழ்படுதல் இன்று

To possess plenty yet neglect hospitality is utter poverty in the midst of wealth; such folly belongs only to the senseless.

உடைமையுள் இன்மை விருந்தோம்பல் ஓம்பா
மடமை மடவார்கண் உண்டு

Sorrowful destitution will never touch those who speak pleasant, joy-bringing words to all people.

துன்புறூஉம் துவ்வாமை இல்லாகும் யார்மாட்டும்
இன்புறூஉம் இன்சொ லவர்க்கு

The wise never look down on the poverty of one who stood firm in fairness and goodness.

கெடுவாக வையாது உலகம் நடுவாக
நன்றிக்கண் தங்கியான் தாழ்வு

The worst poverty is sending a guest away hungry. The greatest strength is bearing with people who act out of ignorance.

இன்மையுள் இன்மை விருந்தொரால் வன்மையுள்
வன்மை மடவார்ப் பொறை

Lakshmi, the deity of fortune, will not abide with the envious; she abandons them to her sister Misfortune and departs.

அவ்வித்து அழுக்காறு உடையானைச் செய்யவள்
தவ்வையைக் காட்டி விடும்

Those who have mastered the senses and see clearly never covet another's goods, even when they say to themselves, 'I am in want.'

இலமென்று வெஃகுதல் செய்யார் புலம்வென்ற
புன்மையில் காட்சி யவர்

Never plead poverty as an excuse to commit wrongful deeds; doing so only deepens one's destitution and leads to lasting ruin.

இலன்என்று தீயவை செய்யற்க செய்யின்
இலனாகும் மற்றும் பெயர்த்து

Those who clearly understand their civic duty do not shrink from helping others, even during periods when their own resources decline.

இடனில் பருவத்தும் ஒப்புரவிற்கு ஒல்கார்
கடனறி காட்சி யவர்

For a benevolent person, true poverty is not the lack of money, but the inability to extend the help they long to give.

நயனுடையான் நல்கூர்ந்தா னாதல் செயும்நீர
செய்யாது அமைகலா வாறு

Giving to the truly destitute who possess nothing is genuine charity; giving to others resembles a loan made with the expectation of a return.

வறியார்க்கொன்று ஈவதே ஈகைமற் றெல்லாம்
குறியெதிர்ப்பை நீர துடைத்து

Relieving the tormenting hunger of the destitute is the safest treasury in which a person can store their hard-earned wealth.

அற்றார் அழிபசி தீர்த்தல் அஃதொருவன்
பெற்றான் பொருள்வைப் புழி

Nothing is more agonizing than death; yet even death becomes sweet when one is utterly unable to give relief to the poor.

சாதலின் இன்னாத தில்லை இனிததூஉம்
ஈதல் இயையாக் கடை

Giving to the destitute and earning enduring renown through that service is the supreme profit of human existence.

Just as this earthly world offers no joy to those without material resources, the higher spiritual realm offers no entry to those without compassion.

பொருளற்றார் பூப்பர் ஒருகால் அருளற்றார்
அற்றார்மற் றாதல் அரிது

The verse says the reason those who lack are many is that practitioners of austerity are few, while non-practitioners are many.

இலர்பல ராகிய காரணம் நோற்பார்
சிலர்பலர் நோலா தவர்

Those living in diseased bodies and in an abject life of poverty are said by interpreters of karma to be people who removed lives from bodies in a former birth.

உயிருடம்பின் நீக்கியா ரென்ப செயிருடம்பின்
செல்லாத்தீ வாழ்க்கை யவர்

கடையரே கல்லா தவர்

The wealth accumulated by the unlearned brings greater harm than the poverty endured by the learned.

நல்லார்கண் பட்ட வறுமையின் இன்னாதே
கல்லார்கண் பட்ட திரு

Even after wealth is gone, continuing to honour an established bond is a grace the Kural attributes uniquely to kin.

பற்றற்ற கண்ணும் பழைமைபா ராட்டுதல்
சுற்றத்தார் கண்ணே உள

Forgetful negligence destroys a person's reputation, just as continual destitution destroys learning or practical intelligence.

Even when one sees the hunger of the mother who bore them, one must not do a deed the ethically wise condemn.

ஈன்றாள் பசிகாண்பான் ஆயினுஞ் செய்யற்க
சான்றோர் பழிக்கும் வினை

The deep poverty of the worthy is superior to wealth obtained by embracing blame.

பழிமலைந்து எய்திய ஆக்கத்தின் சான்றோர்
கழிநல் குரவே தலை

Those who doted on the dice, the gaming den, and their skillful hand have ended in utter poverty.

கவறும் கழகமும் கையும் தருக்கி
இவறியார் இல்லாகி யார்

Those covered by the misfortune called gambling will never fill their belly and will suffer ceaseless misery.

அகடாரார் அல்லல் உழப்பர்சூ தென்னும்
முகடியான் மூடப்பட் டார்

Even when their capacity to give diminishes through poverty, an ancient noble house never parts with its virtues.

வழங்குவ துள்வீழ்ந்தக் கண்ணும் பழங்குடி
பண்பில் தலைப்பிரிதல் இன்று

In prosperity cultivate humility; in adversity maintain unyielding dignity.

பெருக்கத்து வேண்டும் பணிதல் சிறிய
சுருக்கத்து வேண்டும் உயர்வு

Poverty is no disgrace to a person who is fortified by the strength of noble character.

இன்மை ஒருவற்கு இளிவன்று சால்பென்னும்
திண்மை உண்டாகப் பெறின்

To those who neither give to the needy nor enjoy it themselves, even crores of wealth are entirely worthless.

கொடுப்பதூஉம் துய்ப்பதூஉம் இல்லார்க்கு அடுக்கிய
கோடியுண் டாயினும் இல்

The wealth of one who helps no needy person goes to waste, like great beauty growing old in solitary loneliness.

அற்றார்க்கொன்று ஆற்றாதான் செல்வம் மிகநலம்
பெற்றாள் தமியள்மூத் தற்று

The brief poverty of generous benefactors is like a rain cloud temporarily running dry.

சீருடைச் செல்வர் சிறுதுனி மாரி
வறங்கூர்ந் தனையது உடைத்து

Mother Earth laughs in scorn at those who sit idle, complaining that they have nothing.

இலமென்று அசைஇ இருப்பாரைக் காணின்
நிலமென்னும் நல்லாள் நகும்

If you ask what brings greater grief than poverty, nothing is as painful as poverty itself.

When the sinner called poverty strikes, it robs a person of happiness both in this life and the next.

Meeting someone free from the disease of stinginess dispels all the pains of poverty at once.

கரப்பிடும்பை யில்லாரைக் காணின் நிரப்பிடும்பை
எல்லாம் ஒருங்கு கெடும்

One who asks must not show anger if denied; their own poverty is proof that means are not always available.

இரப்பான் வெகுளாமை வேண்டும் நிரப்பிடும்பை
தானேயும் சாலும் கரி

Refraining from begging, even from beloved friends who give gladly, is ten million times better than living on charity.

இரவாமை கோடி உறும்

If the creator destined people to live by begging, may he too wander homeless and perish.

தெண்ணீர் அடுபுற்கை ஆயினும் தாள்தந்தது
உண்ணலின் ஊங்கினிய தில்

The fragile boat of begging shatters when it strikes the hidden rock of refusal.

இரவென்னும் ஏமாப்பில் தோணி கரவென்னும்
பார்தாக்கப் பக்கு விடும்
