Greed

If a man, abandoning fairness, covets another's goods, his greed ruins his own family and heaps wrongs on him at once.

நடுவின்றி நன்பொருள் வெஃகின் குடிபொன்றிக்
குற்றமும் ஆங்கே தரும்

Those who shrink in shame from any unfairness will not, for the gain it might bring, do the shameful things coveting leads to.

படுபயன் வெஃகிப் பழிப்படுவ செய்யார்
நடுவன்மை நாணு பவர்

Those who long for the lasting joy of virtue never do wrong for the fleeting pleasure that seizing another's wealth might buy.

சிற்றின்பம் வெஃகி அறனல்ல செய்யாரே
மற்றின்பம் வேண்டு பவர்

Those who have mastered the senses and see clearly never covet another's goods, even when they say to themselves, 'I am in want.'

இலமென்று வெஃகுதல் செய்யார் புலம்வென்ற
புன்மையில் காட்சி யவர்

What use is a mind subtle and vast in learning, if it yields to greed and does senseless things to anyone at all?

அஃகி அகன்ற அறிவென்னாம் யார்மாட்டும்
வெஃகி வெறிய செயின்

Even one who loves grace and walks the household path to it is ruined the moment he covets another's wealth and plots crooked ways to get it.

அருள்வெஃகி ஆற்றின்கண் நின்றான் பொருள்வெஃகிப்
பொல்லாத சூழக் கெடும்

Do not desire the gain got by coveting; when its harvest comes, the fruit is anything but good.

வேண்டற்க வெஃகியாம் ஆக்கம் விளைவயின்
மாண்டற் கரிதாம் பயன்

What keeps wealth from dwindling? Simply this: not coveting the property in another's hand.

அஃகாமை செல்வத்திற்கு யாதெனின் வெஃகாமை
வேண்டும் பிறன்கைப் பொருள்

Fortune seeks out, of her own accord, the wise who know what is right and never covet — she finds the way to their door.

அறனறிந்து வெஃகா அறிவுடையார்ச் சேரும்
திறன்அறிந் தாங்கே திரு

Reckless coveting breeds ruin; the proud wealth of wanting nothing breeds victory over all.

வேண்டாமை என்னுஞ் செருக்கு

ஈத்துவக்கும் இன்பம் அறியார்கொல் தாமுடைமை
வைத்திழக்கும் வன்க ணவர்

Hoarding wealth and feasting alone while ignoring the starving around you is far more shameful than begging for food.

இரத்தலின் இன்னாது மன்ற நிரப்பிய
தாமே தமியர் உணல்

Compassion-guided love is absent in those who desire another's property and watch for an unguarded moment.

அருள்கருதி அன்புடைய ராதல் பொருள்கருதிப்
பொச்சாப்புப் பார்ப்பார்கண் இல்

For a ruler, refusing to give wealth when duty requires it, honor severed from excellence, and unmeasured delight are faults.

இவறலும் மாண்பிறந்த மானமும் மாணா
உவகையும் ஏதம் இறைக்கு

The wealth of one who clings to it and leaves undone the things that ought to be done will perish without remaining capable of survival.

செயற்பால செய்யா திவறியான் செல்வம்
உயற்பால தன்றிக் கெடும்

உயிர்க்கிறுதி ஆகி விடும்

A ruler who harasses subjects for wealth and acts unjustly is crueller than those who have made killing their trade.

கொலைமேற்கொண் டாரிற் கொடிதே அலைமேற்கொண்டு
அல்லவை செய்தொழுகும் வேந்து

Those who did not cling to prosperity with possessive hoarding do not collapse into ‘we have nothing’ when it recedes.

அற்றேமென்று அல்லற் படுபவோ பெற்றேமென்று
ஓம்புதல் தேற்றா தவர்

Not becoming a personal rival for what the ruler seeks brings the minister enduring prosperity from that ruler.

மன்னர் விழைப விழையாமை மன்னரால்
மன்னிய ஆக்கந் தரும்

Desire not gambling even if you can win; what is won is like bait swallowed by a fish on a hook.

வேண்டற்க வென்றிடினும் சூதினை வென்றதூஉம்
தூண்டிற்பொன் மீன்விழுங்கி அற்று

If one gluttonously overeats heedless of his digestive fire, diseases will multiply beyond measure.

தீயள வன்றித் தெரியான் பெரிதுண்ணின்
நோயள வின்றிப் படும்

One who hoards vast wealth but refuses to enjoy it is dead while living; he can do nothing with it.

வைத்தான்வாய் சான்ற பெரும்பொருள் அஃதுண்ணான்
செத்தான் செயக்கிடந்தது இல்

Hoarding wealth believing it accomplishes everything, yet giving nothing away, leads to endless craving and misery.

பொருளானாம் எல்லாமென்று ஈயாது இவறும்
மருளானாம் மாணாப் பிறப்பு

Denying oneself, shunning loved ones, and ignoring virtue to hoard wealth will only leave it for strangers to take.
