பழியஞ்சிப் பாத்தூண் உடைத்தாயின் வாழ்க்கை
வழியெஞ்சல் எஞ்ஞான்றும் இல்

To greet another with a beaming smile and pleasant words is better even than giving gifts with a glad heart.

அகன்அமர்ந்து ஈதலின் நன்றே முகனமர்ந்து
இன்சொலன் ஆகப் பெறின்

The family of the one who can't bear to see others given to will waste away, without even food or clothing.

கொடுப்பது அழுக்கறுப்பான் சுற்றம் உடுப்பதூஉம்
உண்பதூஉம் இன்றிக் கெடும்

No one ever grew great by envy, and no generous heart ever fell from greatness.

அழுக்கற்று அகன்றாரும் இல்லை அஃதுஇல்லார்
பெருக்கத்தில் தீர்ந்தாரும் இல்

Just as the world can offer nothing in return to the rain cloud that sustains life, true civic help expects no payback from those it serves.

கைம்மாறு வேண்டா கடப்பாடு மாரிமாட்டு
என்ஆற்றுங் கொல்லோ உலகு

All the wealth earned through persistent, honest effort exists for the purpose of helping worthy people in society.

தாளாற்றித் தந்த பொருளெல்லாம் தக்கார்க்கு
வேளாண்மை செய்தற் பொருட்டு

Both in this earthly world and in the world of the celestials, it is rare to find a greater good than living in fitting service to others.

புத்தே ளுலகத்தும் ஈண்டும் பெறலரிதே
ஒப்புரவின் நல்ல பிற

Wealth belonging to an exceptionally generous person is like a medicinal tree whose every part heals and never fails to cure.

மருந்தாகித் தப்பா மரத்தற்றால் செல்வம்
பெருந்தகை யான்கண் படின்

For a benevolent person, true poverty is not the lack of money, but the inability to extend the help they long to give.

நயனுடையான் நல்கூர்ந்தா னாதல் செயும்நீர

Even if receiving from others were praised as a good path, it is still demeaning; even if there were no heavenly reward, giving to others remains supreme.

நல்லாறு எனினும் கொளல்தீது மேலுலகம்
இல்லெனினும் ஈதலே நன்று

Giving to a person before they are forced to express the painful cry of poverty belongs only to those of noble character.

இலனென்னும் எவ்வம் உரையாமை ஈதல்
குலனுடையான் கண்ணே யுள

It is painful to beg, and painful to be begged from; but both sorrows vanish the moment one gives and sees the petitioner's face light up with joy.

மாற்றுவார் ஆற்றலின் பின்

Relieving the tormenting hunger of the destitute is the safest treasury in which a person can store their hard-earned wealth.

அற்றார் அழிபசி தீர்த்தல் அஃதொருவன்
பெற்றான் பொருள்வைப் புழி

The fiery disease of hunger never touches one whose life is devoted to sharing daily food with those in need.

பாத்தூண் மரீஇ யவனைப் பசியென்னும்
தீப்பிணி தீண்டல் அரிது

Cruel misers who hoard their wealth and lose it without purpose have never tasted the exquisite joy of giving to others.

ஈத்துவக்கும் இன்பம் அறியார்கொல் தாமுடைமை
வைத்திழக்கும் வன்க ணவர்

Hoarding wealth and feasting alone while ignoring the starving around you is far more shameful than begging for food.

இரத்தலின் இன்னாது மன்ற நிரப்பிய
தாமே தமியர் உணல்

Nothing is more agonizing than death; yet even death becomes sweet when one is utterly unable to give relief to the poor.

சாதலின் இன்னாத தில்லை இனிததூஉம்
ஈதல் இயையாக் கடை

Giving to the destitute and earning enduring renown through that service is the supreme profit of human existence.

ஈதல் இசைபட வாழ்தல் அதுவல்லது
ஊதியம் இல்லை உயிர்க்கு

All praises spoken by the world endure permanently only when attached to the names of those who give freely to the needy.

Have householders perhaps forgotten their own austerity because they are intent on supplying renunciants with what sustains them?

துறந்தார்க்குத் துப்புரவு வேண்டி மறந்தார்கொல்
மற்றை யவர்கள் தவம்

One who speaks truth in full agreement with the mind stands above those who combine austerity with giving.

மனத்தொடு வாய்மை மொழியின் தவத்தொடு
தானஞ்செய் வாரின் தலை

Sharing one's food and protecting many kinds of life stands foremost among all virtues gathered by the authors of ethical texts.

பகுத்துண்டு பல்லுயிர் ஓம்புதல் நூலோர்
தொகுத்தவற்றுள் எல்லாந் தலை

Wealth is by nature unable to last; if it comes to you, use it at once for deeds whose good can endure.

அற்கா இயல்பிற்றுச் செல்வம் அதுபெற்றால்
அற்குப ஆங்கே செயல்

Unfailing courage, generosity, wisdom, and purposeful energy—these four are the proper qualities of a ruler.

அஞ்சாமை ஈகை அறிவூக்கம் இந்நான்கும்
எஞ்சாமை வேந்தர்க் கியல்பு

For one able to give and protect with pleasant speech, this world will, by that leader's word, become as extensive as the leader intends.

When one can give relatives what they need and also speak pleasantly, one will be surrounded by kin of many connected kinds.

கொடுத்தலும் இன்சொலும் ஆற்றின் அடுக்கிய
சுற்றத்தால் சுற்றப் படும்

In this world, no one has a circle of kin to equal that of one who gives greatly and does not cherish anger.

பெருங்கொடையான் பேணான் வெகுளி அவனின்
மருங்குடையார் மாநிலத்து இல்

A crow does not hide found food; it calls its kind and eats with them. Circle-based prosperity belongs only to people of that sharing nature.

காக்கை கரவா கரைந்துண்ணும் ஆக்கமும்
அன்னநீ ரார்க்கே உள

Rulers without resolve do not attain, in this world, the proud self-regard of being called generous.

உள்ளம் இலாதவர் எய்தார் உலகத்து
வள்ளியம் என்னுஞ் செருக்கு

The worthy pride called beneficence rests within the quality called persevering effort.

தாளாண்மை என்னும் தகைமைக்கண் தங்கிற்றே
வேளாண்மை என்னுஞ் செருக்கு

Beneficence attempted without persevering capability fails, like a demanding instrument placed in hands not prepared to wield it.

தாளாண்மை இல்லாதான் வேளாண்மை பேடிகை
வாளாண்மை போலக் கெடும்

Cultivate the friendship of those free from blame; if already bound to people whose conduct does not accord with the right way, give even something they seek and leave that friendship.

மருவுக மாசற்றார் கேண்மைஒன் றீத்தும்
ஒருவுக ஒப்பிலார் நட்பு

If one lacking sound understanding gives with an open heart, it is purely the good fortune and merit of the recipient.

அறிவிலான் நெஞ்சுவந்து ஈதல் பிறிதியாதும்
இல்லை பெறுவான் தவம்

One who fears what need not be feared, does not learn what must be known, lacks accord, and will not give becomes easy for an enemy to overcome.

அஞ்சும் அறியான் அமைவிலன் ஈகலான்
தஞ்சம் எளியன் பகைக்கு

He who fears his wife will always fear doing good deeds for the virtuous.

இல்லாளை அஞ்சுவான் அஞ்சுமற் றெஞ்ஞான்றும்
நல்லார்க்கு நல்ல செயல்

A pleasant smile, generous giving, kind speech, and contempt for none: these four distinguish the noble.

நகைஈகை இன்சொல் இகழாமை நான்கும்
வகையென்ப வாய்மைக் குடிக்கு

Even when their capacity to give diminishes through poverty, an ancient noble house never parts with its virtues.

வழங்குவ துள்வீழ்ந்தக் கண்ணும் பழங்குடி
பண்பில் தலைப்பிரிதல் இன்று

Unloved by anyone because he gives nothing, what lasting legacy can such a person leave behind?

எச்சமென்று என்எண்ணுங் கொல்லோ ஒருவரால்
நச்சப் படாஅ தவன்

To those who neither give to the needy nor enjoy it themselves, even crores of wealth are entirely worthless.

கொடுப்பதூஉம் துய்ப்பதூஉம் இல்லார்க்கு அடுக்கிய
கோடியுண் டாயினும் இல்

Great wealth in the hands of one who neither uses it nor gives to worthy people is only a disease.

ஏதம் பெருஞ்செல்வம் தான்துவ்வான் தக்கார்க்கொன்று
ஈதல் இயல்பிலா தான்

The wealth of one who helps no needy person goes to waste, like great beauty growing old in solitary loneliness.

அற்றார்க்கொன்று ஆற்றாதான் செல்வம் மிகநலம்
பெற்றாள் தமியள்மூத் தற்று

Wealth amassed by a person whom nobody loves is like a poison tree bearing fruit in the heart of town.

நச்சப் படாதவன் செல்வம் நடுவூருள்
நச்சு மரம்பழுத் தற்று

Those who live by the labor of their own hands never beg; they give freely to all who ask.

இரவார் இரப்பார்க்கொன்று ஈவர் கரவாது
கைசெய்தூண் மாலை யவர்

One may ask help from those worthy of asking; if they refuse, the blame is theirs alone.

இரக்க இரத்தக்கார்க் காணின் கரப்பின்
அவர்பழி தம்பழி அன்று

Even asking for help brings joy, if given kindly without causing pain.

இன்பம் ஒருவற்கு இரத்தல் இரந்தவை
துன்பம் உறாஅ வரின்

To stand and ask help from open-hearted people who know duty carries a dignity of its own.

கரப்பிலா நெஞ்சின் கடனறிவார் முன்நின்று
இரப்புமோ ரேஎர் உடைத்து

Asking help from those who never dream of withholding is as noble as giving itself.

இரத்தலும் ஈதலே போலும் கரத்தல்
கனவிலும் தேற்றாதார் மாட்டு

The needy dare to stand and ask openly only because open-handed givers exist in the world.

கரப்பிலார் வையகத்து உண்மையால் கண்ணின்று
இரப்பவர் மேற்கொள் வது

Meeting someone free from the disease of stinginess dispels all the pains of poverty at once.

கரப்பிடும்பை யில்லாரைக் காணின் நிரப்பிடும்பை
எல்லாம் ஒருங்கு கெடும்

When meeting givers who help without mockery, the heart overflows with inner delight.

இகழ்ந்தெள்ளாது ஈவாரைக் காணின் மகிழ்ந்துள்ளம்
உள்ளுள் உவப்பது உடைத்து

If none came seeking aid, what honor or renown could givers ever attain?

ஈவார்கண் என்னுண்டாம் தோற்றம் இரந்துகோள்
மேவார் இலாஅக் கடை

Refraining from begging, even from beloved friends who give gladly, is ten million times better than living on charity.

கரவாது உவந்தீயும் கண்ணன்னார் கண்ணும்
இரவாமை கோடி உறும்

I plead with all who ask for help: if you must ask, never ask from those who hoard and hide.

இரப்பன் இரப்பாரை எல்லாம் இரப்பின்
கரப்பார் இரவன்மின் என்று

A beggar's life departs at the word of refusal; where does the soul of the refuser hide?

கரப்பவர்க்கு யாங்கொளிக்கும் கொல்லோ இரப்பவர்
சொல்லாடப் போஒம் உயிர்

The base will not flick water off their hand for beggars; they give only to a threatening fist.

ஈர்ங்கை விதிரார் கயவர் கொடிறுடைக்கும்
கூன்கையர் அல்லா தவர்க்கு

The noble help as soon as need is spoken; the base yield only when crushed like sugarcane.
