The folly of desiring another man's wife is never found in those who have truly understood virtue and right living.

பிறன்பொருளாள் பெட்டொழுகும் பேதைமை ஞாலத்து
அறம்பொருள் கண்டார்கண் இல்

Of all who have strayed from virtue, none is a greater fool than the one who waits at another man's door.

அறன்கடை நின்றாருள் எல்லாம் பிறன்கடை
நின்றாரின் பேதையார் இல்

People do not know whether they will live even for one moment, yet they entertain not merely millions but countless plans.

ஒருபொழுதும் வாழ்வது அறியார் கருதுப
கோடியும் அல்ல பல

When loss-producing destiny arrives, it makes understanding foolish; when gain-producing destiny arrives, it expands understanding.

பேதைமை எல்லாந் தரும்

The house of the foolish person who holds destructive sloth within will decline even before that person does.

மடிமடிக் கொண்டொழுகும் பேதை பிறந்த
குடிமடியும் தன்னினும் முந்து

The gain said to belong to a person is this: leaving behind friendship with those who persist in foolish conduct.

ஊதியம் என்பது ஒருவற்குப் பேதையார்
கேண்மை ஒரீஇ விடல்

The estrangement of a discerning person is ten million times better than intimate friendship with one acting in practical folly.

பேதை பெருங்கெழீஇ நட்பின் அறிவுடையார்
ஏதின்மை கோடி உறும்

What is the clearest form of folly? Choosing what brings harm and letting go of what brings benefit.

பேதைமை என்பதொன்று யாதெனின் ஏதங்கொண்டு
ஊதியம் போக விடல்

Of all follies, the greatest is becoming attached to conduct that is not right or fitting for the responsibility one has accepted.

பேதைமையுள் எல்லாம் பேதைமை காதன்மை
கையல்ல தன்கட் செயல்

Folly’s pattern is to feel no shame where shame is due, seek none of what should be sought, break human bonds through word and deed, and care for nothing worthy of care.

நாணாமை நாடாமை நாரின்மை யாதொன்றும்
பேணாமை பேதை தொழில்

None is more foolish than one who studies and understands restraint, explains it to others, yet does not practise it personally.

ஓதி உணர்ந்தும் பிறர்க்குரைத்தும் தானடங்காப்
பேதையின் பேதையார் இல்

ஏதிலார் ஆரத் தமர்பசிப்பர் பேதை
பெருஞ்செல்வம் உற்றக் கடை

If a person already ruled by confused judgment gains even one possession or power, the confusion grows like intoxication added to an existing delirium.

மையல் ஒருவன் களித்தற்றால் பேதைதன்
கையொன்று உடைமை பெறின்

The friendship of people who act without good judgment is ‘very pleasant’ in this ironic sense: when it ends, the separation causes no pain.

பெரிதினிது பேதையார் கேண்மை பிரிவின்கண்
பீழை தருவதொன் றில்

A person who enters an assembly of the learned without fitting understanding or conduct is like placing an unwashed foot upon a clean, comfortable bed.

கழாஅக்கால் பள்ளியுள் வைத்தற்றால் சான்றோர்
குழாஅத்துப் பேதை புகல்

Even at some cost, one should surely take up opposition to a person who has begun an undertaking yet keeps doing what is unfit for it.

கொடுத்தும் கொளல்வேண்டும் மன்ற அடுத்திருந்து
மாணாத செய்வான் பகை

One who stands entirely alone yet takes on a multitude of foes is more foolish than the most bewildered of madmen.

ஏமுற் றவரினும் ஏழை தமியனாய்ப்
பல்லார் பகைகொள் பவன்

If one wishes for ruin, let him act without listening to wise counsel by offending those who have the power to destroy.

கெடல்வேண்டின் கேளாது செய்க அடல்வேண்டின்
ஆற்று பவர்கண் இழுக்கு

Those whose minds are anchored in thoughtful deliberation and broad vision will never succumb to foolish infatuation.

எண்சேர்ந்த நெஞ்சத் திடனுடையார்க்கு எஞ்ஞான்றும்
பெண்சேர்ந்தாம் பேதைமை இல்

Reasoning with a drunkard is like searching underwater with a flaming torch.

களித்தானைக் காரணம் காட்டுதல் கீழ்நீர்க்
குளித்தானைத் தீத்துரீஇ அற்று

In the minds of the small, there is never the noble thought to revere and learn from the great.

சிறியார் உணர்ச்சியுள் இல்லை பெரியாரைப்
பேணிக்கொள்வேம் என்னும் நோக்கு

To those who cannot warmly mingle and share joy with others, this vast world is dark even at noon.

நகல்வல்லர் அல்லார்க்கு மாயிரு ஞாலம்
பகலும்பாற் பட்டன்று இருள்

Hoarding wealth believing it accomplishes everything, yet giving nothing away, leads to endless craving and misery.

பொருளானாம் எல்லாமென்று ஈயாது இவறும்
மருளானாம் மாணாப் பிறப்பு

The motions of those without conscience within are like a wooden puppet pretending to be alive.

நாண்அகத் தில்லார் இயக்கம் மரப்பாவை
நாணால் உயிர்மருட்டி அற்று

The base seem luckier than the wise, for no moral conscience ever troubles their mind.

நன்றறி வாரிற் கயவர் திருவுடையர்
நெஞ்சத்து அவலம் இலர்

The base are like the gods in that they do whatever they desire without restraint.

தேவர் அனையர் கயவர் அவருந்தாம்
மேவன செய்தொழுக லான்

O heart, comparing her rare eyes to common flowers seen by all, you lose your senses!

மலர்காணின் மையாத்தி நெஞ்சே இவள்கண்
பலர்காணும் பூவொக்கும் என்று

Thinking no one knows my hidden pain, my love now wanders bewildered through the streets.

அறிகிலார் எல்லாரும் என்றேஎன் காமம்
மறுகின் மறுகும் மருண்டு

Never having suffered love's agony themselves, the foolish openly mock me to my face.

யாம்கண்ணின் காண நகுப அறிவில்லார்
யாம்பட்ட தாம்படா ஆறு

Not knowing how hard she is to win, the town kindly links her name with mine.

மலரன்ன கண்ணாள் அருமை அறியாது
அலரெமக்கு ஈந்ததிவ் வூர்

Trying to quench love with public gossip is like trying to put out fire with ghee.

நெய்யால் எரிநுதுப்பேம் என்றற்றால் கெளவையால்
காமம் நுதுப்பேம் எனல்

They themselves showed him to me, and that is the whole of how I came to know this grief that will not cool. What are these eyes weeping for now?

கண்தாம் கலுழ்வ தெவன்கொலோ தண்டாநோய்
தாம்காட்ட யாம்கண் டது

Those darkened eyes looked at him that day without once examining what it would come to. Now they will not work out that they brought it on themselves and must bear it. What is all this wasting for?

தெரிந்துணரா நோக்கிய உண்கண் பரிந்துணராப்
பைதல் உழப்பது எவன்?

All at once, of themselves, they looked; and now, again of themselves, they sit and weep. There is something in this fit to be laughed at.

கதுமெனத் தாநோக்கித் தாமே கலுழும்
இதுநகத் தக்க துடைத்து

Having set standing in me a grief there is no living through and no getting free of, my dark eyes have run so dry that they cannot even rain.

பெயலாற்றா நீருலந்த உண்கண் உயலாற்றா
உய்வில்நோய் என்கண் நிறுத்து

Oh, but this is sweet — the very eyes that made this grief for me have now fallen into it themselves.

ஓஒ இனிதே எமக்கிந்நோய் செய்தகண்
தாஅம் இதற்பட் டது

Let them labour on and on until the water inside them is cut off — those eyes that gazed at him that day, wanting him, melting as they looked.

உழந்துழந் துள்நீர் அறுக விழைந்திழைந்து
வேண்டி அவர்க்கண்ட கண்

You would tell your great trouble to a man who is nothing to you? Go and fill up the sea instead. Long life to you, my heart.

உறாஅர்க்கு உறுநோய் உரைப்பாய் கடலைச்
செறாஅஅய் வாழிய நெஞ்சு

That you should ache for him while he holds no love is folly, and nothing else. Bless you, my heart.

காதல் அவரிலர் ஆகநீ நோவது
பேதைமை வாழியென் நெஞ்சு

What comes of sitting here, heart, remembering him and aching? In the man who gave this wasting sickness there is no such remembering, and no pity.

இருந்துள்ளி என்பரிதல் நெஞ்சே பரிந்துள்ளல்
பைதல்நோய் செய்தார்கண் இல்

You ache that he has not come back out of pity, and then you set off after the very man who chose to part: you know nothing, my heart.

பரிந்தவர் நல்காரென்று ஏங்கிப் பிரிந்தவர்
பின்செல்வாய் பேதைஎன் நெஞ்சு

Like those who leap into running water knowing perfectly well it will carry them off: knowing the sulk would not hold, what did I gain by sulking?

உய்த்தல் அறிந்து புனல்பாய் பவரேபோல்
பொய்த்தல் அறிந்தென் புலந்து

You have seen for yourself that he is one who does not draw near. And still, my heart, you go to him, on the sole ground that he will not be harsh.

உறாஅ தவர்க்கண்ட கண்ணும் அவரைச்
செறாஅரெனச் சேறியென் நெஞ்சு

You will not stay with me; you go after him exactly as you please. Is that because you hold that the ruined have no friends, my heart — or is it simply what you are?

கெட்டார்க்கு நட்டார்இல் என்பதோ நெஞ்சேநீ
பெட்டாங்கு அவர்பின் செலல்

I have forgotten even my own self-respect, caught in this worthless and witless heart of mine that will not forget the man who forgot me.

நாணும் மறந்தேன் அவர்மறக் கல்லாஎன்
மாணா மடநெஞ்சிற் பட்டு
