If the abundance that clouds pour down begins to fail, farmers will set aside their ploughs.

வாரி வளங்குன்றிக் கால்

In every possible way, without ceaseless pause, do deeds of virtue wherever action can reach.

ஒல்லும் வகையான் அறவினை ஓவாதே
செல்லும்வாய் எல்லாஞ் செயல்

The destiny that brings gain gives rise to tireless effort; the destiny that brings loss gives rise to idleness.

ஆகூழால் தோன்றும் அசைவின்மை கைப்பொருள்
போகூழால் தோன்றும் மடி

Effort not pursued through a means capable of completing it will expose its flaw even when many people stand together to support it.

ஆற்றின் வருந்தா வருத்தம் பலர்நின்று
போற்றினும் பொத்துப் படும்

No undertaking need remain impossible merely because it is difficult, if it is thoughtfully guarded and performed with a non-forgetting mind as the instrument.

அரியஎன்று ஆகாத இல்லைபொச் சாவாக்
கருவியால் போற்றிச் செயின்

Those who want their house to remain a worthy house must recognise sloth for what it is and live with deliberate effort.

மடியை மடியா ஒழுகல் குடியைக்
குடியாக வேண்டு பவர்

For those sunk in sloth and without worthy effort, the house declines and faults multiply.

குடிமடிந்து குற்றம் பெருகும் மடிமடிந்து
மாண்ட உஞற்றி லவர்க்கு

Do not lose heart by saying, ‘This is too difficult.’ Sustained effort creates in us the capacity and distinction needed to complete it.

அருமை உடைத்தென்று அசாவாமை வேண்டும்
பெருமை முயற்சி தரும்

Once a work has begun, guard it from failing through incompletion. The world withdraws its trust from those who repeatedly leave a work deficient.

வினைக்கண் வினைகெடல் ஓம்பல் வினைக்குறை
தீர்ந்தாரின் தீர்ந்தன்று உலகு

The worthy pride called beneficence rests within the quality called persevering effort.

தாளாண்மை என்னும் தகைமைக்கண் தங்கிற்றே
வேளாண்மை என்னுஞ் செருக்கு

Beneficence attempted without persevering capability fails, like a demanding instrument placed in hands not prepared to wield it.

தாளாண்மை இல்லாதான் வேளாண்மை பேடிகை
வாளாண்மை போலக் கெடும்

One who seeks the work to be done rather than private pleasure becomes a supporting pillar, removing the suffering of those close to them.

இன்பம் விழையான் வினைவிழைவான் தன்கேளிர்
துன்பம் துடைத்தூன்றும் தூண்

Effort develops prosperity-producing work; lack of effort lets want enter. This does not make poverty proof of personal failure: opportunity, health, injustice, and disaster also shape outcomes.

முயற்சி திருவினை ஆக்கும் முயற்றின்மை
இன்மை புகுத்தி விடும்

They say the goddess of misfortune dwells with entrenched sloth, while the lotus goddess of prosperity takes her stand at the feet of one free from sloth. These are literary personifications, not judgements about gender, body, colour, birth, poverty, or human worth.

மடியுளாள் மாமுகடி என்ப மடியிலான்
தாளுளான் தாமரையி னாள்

Lack of favourable endowment or fortune is blame to no one. The blame lies in knowing the action required and making no effort when it is genuinely possible.

பொறியின்மை யார்க்கும் பழியன்று அறிவறிந்து
ஆள்வினை இன்மை பழி

Even when fate prevents the intended result, effort is not wholly barren; it yields a return proportionate to the real exertion—skill, knowledge, evidence, or readiness for another opening.

தெய்வத்தான் ஆகா தெனினும் முயற்சிதன்
மெய்வருத்தக் கூலி தரும்

Those who act without agitation or delay, adapting and persisting, make even the fate that obstructs their result turn its back.

ஊழையும் உப்பக்கம் காண்பர் உலைவின்றித்
தாழாது உஞற்று பவர்

Like a draught ox that draws its cart through every obstructed passage, one who can carry an undertaking onward makes adversity itself struggle for a way.

மடுத்தவா யெல்லாம் பகடன்னான் உற்ற
இடுக்கண் இடர்ப்பாடு உடைத்து

One who does not demand uninterrupted pleasure and understands effort's ordinary hardship as part of undertaking the work is not inwardly overthrown when that hardship arrives.

இன்பம் விழையான் இடும்பை இயல்பென்பான்
துன்பம் உறுதல் இலன்

When one receives the necessary hardship of worthy effort as part of its joy, a distinction arises that even rivals are moved to respect.

இன்னாமை இன்பம் எனக்கொளின் ஆகுந்தன்
ஒன்னார் விழையுஞ் சிறப்பு

Weigh the effort required for completion, the obstacles, and the great benefit reached after those obstacles are overcome; then act.

முடிவும் இடையூறும் முற்றியாங்கு எய்தும்
படுபயனும் பார்த்துச் செயல்

That deserves to be called a country where resources reach residents without painful searching; a land that yields only after exhausting pursuit does not.

நாடென்ப நாடா வளத்தன நாடல்ல
நாட வளந்தரு நாடு

Even when a fort possesses every excellence, it is effectively no fort for defenders who lack excellence in action.

எனைமாட்சித் தாகியக் கண்ணும் வினைமாட்சி
இல்லார்கண் இல்லது அரண்

All human beings are born equal; distinctions arise solely from the varying quality of their actions.

பிறப்பொக்கும் எல்லா உயிர்க்கும் சிறப்பொவ்வா
செய்தொழில் வேற்றுமை யான்

Those endowed with greatness accomplish deeds of rare difficulty through proper methods.

பெருமை யுடையவர் ஆற்றுவார் ஆற்றின்
அருமை உடைய செயல்

Nothing brings greater honor than resolving to work tirelessly until one's family is elevated.

கருமம் செயஒருவன் கைதூவேன் என்னும்
பெருமையின் பீடுடையது இல்

A family rises to greatness through continuous effort combined with mature wisdom.

ஆள்வினையும் ஆன்ற அறிவும் எனஇரண்டின்
நீள்வினையால் நீளும் குடி

For those who work promptly to elevate their home, success arrives naturally of itself.

சூழாமல் தானே முடிவெய்தும் தம்குடியைத்
தாழாது உஞற்று பவர்க்கு

True personal strength is mastering the ability to lead and sustain the home you were born into.

நல்லாண்மை என்பது ஒருவற்குத் தான்பிறந்த
இல்லாண்மை ஆக்கிக் கொளல்

Is the body of one who shields their family made only to bear hardship, and never to taste joy?

இடும்பைக்கே கொள்கலம் கொல்லோ குடும்பத்தைக்
குற்ற மறைப்பான் உடம்பு

A family collapses under crisis if there is no strong pillar to step forward and support it.

இடுக்கண்கால் கொன்றிட வீழும் அடுத்தூன்றும்
நல்லாள் இலாத குடி

Though people turn to other pursuits, the world follows the plow; despite all hardships, farming is supreme.

சுழன்றும்ஏர்ப் பின்னது உலகம் அதனால்
உழந்தும் உழவே தலை

Sustaining all who follow other callings, farmers are the vital linchpin of the world.

உழுவார் உலகத்தார்க்கு ஆணிஅஃ தாற்றாது
எழுவாரை எல்லாம் பொறுத்து

If plowed soil is well dried in the sun, crops will flourish richly even without manure.

தொடிப்புழுதி கஃசா உணக்கின் பிடித்தெருவும்
வேண்டாது சாலப் படும்

Nothing is as stubbornly foolish as choosing to escape poverty through begging rather than honest effort.

இன்மை இடும்பை இரந்துதீர் வாமென்னும்
வன்மையின் வன்பாட்ட தில்

Though it be only thin, watery gruel, nothing tastes sweeter than food earned by your own labor.
