Neither compassionate giving nor disciplined contemplation can survive on this earth if the sky withholds its rain.

தானம் தவம்இரண்டும் தங்கா வியன்உலகம்
வானம் வழங்கா தெனின்

The highest verdict of every ethical code is this: nothing surpasses the greatness of those who renounce desire while holding firm to discipline.

ஒழுக்கத்து நீத்தார் பெருமை விழுப்பத்து
வேண்டும் பனுவல் துணிவு

Measuring the greatness of those who have renounced attachment is like trying to count everyone who has ever died on earth.

துறந்தார் பெருமை துணைக்கூறின் வையத்து
இறந்தாரை எண்ணிக்கொண் டற்று

One who guards the five senses with the goad of firm wisdom becomes a seed for the supreme realm of liberation.

உரனென்னும் தோட்டியான் ஓரைந்தும் காப்பான்
வரனென்னும் வைப்பிற்கோர் வித்து

Indra, king of the heavens, is witness enough to the boundless strength of one who conquers the five desires.

ஐந்தவித்தான் ஆற்றல் அகல்விசும்பு ளார்கோமான்
இந்திரனே சாலுங் கரி

Those who accomplish rare and arduous deeds of virtue are truly great; those who cannot bring themselves to do them are small.

செயற்கரிய செய்வார் பெரியர் சிறியர்
செயற்கரிய செய்கலா தார்

The greatness of sages whose words unfailingly come to pass is revealed to the world by the sacred words they leave behind.

நிறைமொழி மாந்தர் பெருமை நிலத்து
மறைமொழி காட்டி விடும்

Even if it endures for merely an instant, none can withstand the righteous anger of those who stand atop the mountain of virtue.

குணமென்னும் குன்றேறி நின்றார் வெகுளி
கணமேயும் காத்தல் அரிது

The virtuous rightly called Anthanar are those who live embracing gracious compassion toward all living beings.

அந்தணர் என்போர் அறவோர்மற் றெவ்வுயிர்க்கும்
செந்தண்மை பூண்டொழுக லான்

A family life that keeps others on the right path without slipping from virtue has greater endurance than the austerities of ascetics.

ஆற்றின் ஒழுக்கி அறனிழுக்கா இல்வாழ்க்கை
நோற்பாரின் நோன்மை உடைத்து

We call those who fast and endure hunger great. Greater still are those who endure other people's cruel words.

உண்ணாது நோற்பார் பெரியர் பிறர்சொல்லும்
இன்னாச்சொல் நோற்பாரின் பின்

The endurance of ascetics who bear their own hunger is great; yet it ranks behind the power of the generous who extinguish the hunger of others.

ஆற்றுவார் ஆற்றல் பசிஆற்றல் அப்பசியை
மாற்றுவார் ஆற்றலின் பின்

Better than pouring offerings into fire and performing a thousand sacrifices is refusing to eat flesh obtained by taking even one creature's life.

அவிசொரிந் தாயிரம் வேட்டலின் ஒன்றன்
உயிர்செகுத் துண்ணாமை நன்று

Bearing the hardship that comes through one's own discipline, while causing no distress to other life—these together form austerity.

உற்றநோய் நோன்றல் உயிர்க்குறுகண் செய்யாமை
அற்றே தவத்திற் குரு

Austerity itself succeeds only for those already formed by austerity; for those without that preparation, taking it up is futile.

தவமும் தவமுடையார்க்கு ஆகும் அதனை
அஃதிலார் மேற்கொள் வது

Have householders perhaps forgotten their own austerity because they are intent on supplying renunciants with what sustains them?

துறந்தார்க்குத் துப்புரவு வேண்டி மறந்தார்கொல்
மற்றை யவர்கள் தவம்

The verse attributes to the power of austerity, if the practitioner so intends, the destruction of adversaries and the elevation of those who delight in it.

ஒன்னார்த் தெறலும் உவந்தாரை ஆக்கலும்
எண்ணின் தவத்தான் வரும்

Because austerity is believed to yield each desired result in the desired way, wise people undertake it here in this life.

வேண்டிய வேண்டியாங் கெய்தலால் செய்தவம்
ஈண்டு முயலப் படும்

Those who practise austerity perform the work proper to them; the others, caught in desire, act vainly and to their own harm.

தவஞ்செய்வார் தங்கருமஞ் செய்வார்மற் றல்லார்
அவஞ்செய்வார் ஆசையுட் பட்டு

As gold shines brighter with repeated heating, those capable of austerity are said to shine more as its hardship presses them.

சுடச்சுடரும் பொன்போல் ஒளிவிடும் துன்பஞ்
சுடச்சுட நோற்கிற் பவர்க்கு

All other enduring beings will revere the person who has gained true mastery of their own life-self.

தன்னுயிர் தான்அறப் பெற்றானை ஏனைய
மன்னுயி ரெல்லாந் தொழும்

Those who attain the full power arising from austerity are said to succeed even in passing beyond Death.

கூற்றம் குதித்தலும் கைகூடும் நோற்றலின்
ஆற்றல் தலைப்பட் டவர்க்குல்

The verse says the reason those who lack are many is that practitioners of austerity are few, while non-practitioners are many.

இலர்பல ராகிய காரணம் நோற்பார்
சிலர்பலர் நோலா தவர்

A person without inner self-mastery who assumes the powerful appearance of an ascetic is like a cow grazing under a tiger's skin.

வலியில் நிலைமையான் வல்லுருவம் பெற்றம்
புலியின்தோல் போர்த்துமேய்ந் தற்று

Doing wrong while hidden inside the appearance of austerity is like a hunter concealed in scrub while trapping birds.

தவமறைந்து அல்லவை செய்தல் புதல்மறைந்து
வேட்டுவன் புள்சிமிழ்த் தற்று

Neither shaving the head nor growing matted hair is necessary if one gives up the conduct that the morally discerning world condemns.

மழித்தலும் நீட்டலும் வேண்டா உலகம்
பழித்தது ஒழித்து விடின்

One who speaks truth in full agreement with the mind stands above those who combine austerity with giving.

மனத்தொடு வாய்மை மொழியின் தவத்தொடு
தானஞ்செய் வாரின் தலை

If a person never entertains anger in the heart, everything they contemplate is attained at once.

உள்ளிய தெல்லாம் உடனெய்தும் உள்ளத்தால்
உள்ளான் வெகுளி எனின்

Possessing nothing is natural to ascetic discipline; possessing even one thing returns and becomes delusion again.

இயல்பாகும் நோன்பிற்கொன்று இன்மை உடைமை
மயலாகும் மற்றும் பெயர்த்து

The ascetic virtue is to guard against desire, for desire can enter by deception and betray a person.

அஞ்சுவ தோரும் அறனே ஒருவனை
வஞ்சிப்ப தோரும் அவா

Though burned by raging fire, one may still survive; but those who offend the great will never escape.

எரியால் சுடப்படினும் உய்வுண்டாம் உய்யார்
பெரியார்ப் பிழைத்தொழுகு வார்

What is the use of a life adorned with every excellence and immense wealth, if one provokes the wrath of the truly worthy?

வகைமாண்ட வாழ்க்கையும் வான்பொருளும் என்னாம்
தகைமாண்ட தக்கார் செறின்

If those who stand like mountains resolve to bring someone low, even those firmly rooted on earth will perish with their whole lineage.

குன்றன்னார் குன்ற மதிப்பின் குடியொடு
நின்றன்னார் மாய்வர் நிலத்து

If those holding lofty vows are angered, even a crowned king will be broken midway and lose his sovereignty.

ஏந்திய கொள்கையார் சீறின் இடைமுரிந்து
வேந்தனும் வேந்து கெடும்

Though possessing boundless allies and support, none can escape if those of supreme excellence are provoked to anger.

இறந்தமைந்த சார்புடையர் ஆயினும் உய்யார்
சிறந்தமைந்த சீரார் செறின்
