About this chapter

On the contradiction of outward ascetic appearance joined to concealed misconduct, and the futility of virtue performed only for display.

Verse 279 is the line to take away, and it works on anybody, in any century. An arrow is straight and cruel in what it does. A lute is curved and produces something good. Judge people by what their character actually does, not by the shape they present.

The rest of the chapter is a gallery of that mismatch, and the images are merciless. A person without inner mastery wearing the powerful appearance of an ascetic is a cow grazing under a tiger's skin (273). Doing wrong from inside that appearance is a hunter crouched in scrub while trapping birds (274). And 277 gives the picture that sticks: bright as the outer red of a kunri seed, dark as its black tip within.

What makes this more than satire is where it lands. Verse 272 asks the question inwards: what use is an appearance lofty as the sky, when your own heart is sinking under a fault it knows about? The chapter is not primarily interested in exposing frauds. It is interested in the private cost of being one. Verse 280 closes it off completely — neither a shaved head nor matted hair is necessary, if you have given up the conduct the discerning world condemns.
