Humility

Like sense organs that lack perception, heads that do not bow before the Possessor of Eightfold Qualities are devoid of purpose.

கோளில் பொறியின் குணமிலவே எண்குணத்தான்
தாளை வணங்காத் தலை

To be humble and speak pleasant words is a person's only true ornament; all other jewels are no real adornment.

பணிவுடையன் இன்சொலன் ஆதல் ஒருவற்கு
அணியல்ல மற்றுப் பிற

Humility becomes everyone, but on those who are prosperous it shines like a crowning wealth.

எல்லார்க்கும் நன்றாம் பணிதல் அவருள்ளும்
செல்வர்க்கே செல்வம் தகைத்து

Those who stood humbly and eagerly before teachers to learn are exalted; those who refused to learn remain base.

உடையார்முன் இல்லார்போல் ஏக்கற்றுங் கற்றார்
கடையரே கல்லா தவர்

It is difficult for those without subtle learning gained by listening to possess speech that bends with humility.

நுணங்கிய கேள்விய ரல்லார் வணங்கிய
வாயின ராதல் அரிது

Do not despise the ruler as younger or related; conduct yourself in keeping with the standing dignity of kingship.

இளையர் இனமுறையர் என்றிகழார் நின்ற
ஒளியோடு ஒழுகப் படும்

Among all qualities praised as good, especially good is the restraint not to speak ahead of those senior in learning.

நன்றென்ற வற்றுள்ளும் நன்றே முதுவருள்
முந்து கிளவாச் செறிவு

Before the learned, present what you know so that it reaches them; then learn the greater matters from those whose learning exceeds yours.

கற்றார்முன் கற்ற செலச்சொல்லித் தாம்கற்ற
மிக்காருள் மிக்க கொளல்

Do not take an enemy’s deferential words as goodwill: the bow’s bend, too, is directed toward harm.

சொல்வணக்கம் ஒன்னார்கண் கொள்ளற்க வில்வணக்கம்
தீங்கு குறித்தமை யான்

Not despising the power of those who can accomplish all they undertake is the foremost safeguard among all protections.

ஆற்றுவார் ஆற்றல் இகழாமை போற்றுவார்
போற்றலுள் எல்லாம் தலை

If you seek true well-being, hold fast to modesty; if you seek family honor, cultivate humility before all.

நலம்வேண்டின் நாணுடைமை வேண்டும் குலம்வேண்டின்
வேண்டுக யார்க்கும் பணிவு

In prosperity cultivate humility; in adversity maintain unyielding dignity.

பெருக்கத்து வேண்டும் பணிதல் சிறிய
சுருக்கத்து வேண்டும் உயர்வு

In the minds of the small, there is never the noble thought to revere and learn from the great.

சிறியார் உணர்ச்சியுள் இல்லை பெரியாரைப்
பேணிக்கொள்வேம் என்னும் நோக்கு

Greatness always conducts itself with humility; smallness constantly parades its self-admiration.

பணியுமாம் என்றும் பெருமை சிறுமை
அணியுமாம் தன்னை வியந்து

Greatness is the absence of conceit; smallness is being swept away by swollen pride.

பெருமை பெருமிதம் இன்மை சிறுமை
பெருமிதம் ஊர்ந்து விடல்

The strength of the capable is humility; and that is the weapon with which the noble disarm foes.

ஆற்றுவார் ஆற்றல் பணிதல் அதுசான்றோர்
மாற்றாரை மாற்றும் படை

The touchstone of noble character is graciously accepting defeat even before inferiors.

சால்பிற்குக் கட்டளை யாதெனின் தோல்வி
துலையல்லார் கண்ணும் கொளல்

Being easily approachable to everyone is the easiest path to attaining noble character.

எண்பதத்தால் எய்தல் எளிதென்ப யார்மாட்டும்
பண்புடைமை என்னும் வழக்கு

Even when I humble myself and bring her round, she flares up — saying that this is exactly the manner I must have with other women too.

தன்னை உணர்த்தினும் காயும் பிறர்க்கும்நீர்
இந்நீரர் ஆகுதிர் என்று

In a lovers' sulk the one who loses is the one who has won; and that is a thing seen in the coming together afterwards.
