To deny that virtue exists and then do evil is bad; but to smile to a person's face and tear them down behind their back is worse.

அறனழீஇ அல்லவை செய்தலின் தீதே
புறனழீஇப் பொய்த்து நகை

The verse declares death better than a life sustained by backbiting and false smiles—a severe ancient denunciation of the conduct, not advice to die; life remains precious and the behaviour can be changed.

புறங்கூறிப் பொய்த்துயிர் வாழ்தலின் சாதல்
அறங்கூற்றும் ஆக்கத் தரும்

However a person's lips may praise virtue, the meanness of heart behind the praise shows in the very fact that they backbite.

அறஞ்சொல்லும் நெஞ்சத்தான் அன்மை புறஞ்சொல்லும்
புன்மையாற் காணப் படும்

The five elements composing the body, says the verse, laugh inwardly at the concealed false conduct of a person whose mind is deceitful.

What use is an appearance lofty as the sky if one's own heart sinks under a fault it knows to be wrong?

A person without inner self-mastery who assumes the powerful appearance of an ascetic is like a cow grazing under a tiger's skin.

வலியில் நிலைமையான் வல்லுருவம் பெற்றம்
புலியின்தோல் போர்த்துமேய்ந் தற்று

Doing wrong while hidden inside the appearance of austerity is like a hunter concealed in scrub while trapping birds.

தவமறைந்து அல்லவை செய்தல் புதல்மறைந்து
வேட்டுவன் புள்சிமிழ்த் தற்று

The concealed false conduct of those who say, ‘We are free of attachment,’ will later bring many troubles and repeated regret: ‘What have we done?’

பற்றற்றேம் என்பார் படிற்றொழுக்கம் எற்றெற்றென்று
ஏதம் பலவுந் தரும்

None is more hard-hearted than those who have not renounced attachment inwardly, yet live by deceiving others as though they had renounced.

நெஞ்சின் துறவார் துறந்தார்போல் வஞ்சித்து
வாழ்வாரின் வன்கணார் இல்

Some people may look as bright as the outer red of a kunri seed, yet within be dark like its black tip, says the verse.

புறங்குன்றி கண்டனைய ரேனும் அகங்குன்றி
முக்கிற் கரியார் உடைத்து

Many people carry impurity in the mind yet bathe ceremonially and move through the world with their conduct concealed.

மனத்தது மாசாக மாண்டார் நீராடி
மறைந்தொழுகு மாந்தர் பலர்

An arrow is straight yet cruel in effect; a lute is curved yet produces what is good. Likewise, understand people by the character of their actions.

கணைகொடிது யாழ்கோடு செவ்விதுஆங் கன்ன
வினைபடு பாலால் கொளல்

Neither shaving the head nor growing matted hair is necessary if one gives up the conduct that the morally discerning world condemns.

மழித்தலும் நீட்டலும் வேண்டா உலகம்
பழித்தது ஒழித்து விடின்

As virtue abides in the heart of those who understand measured discernment, concealment abides in the heart of those practiced in theft.

அளவறிந்தார் நெஞ்சத் தறம்போல நிற்கும்
களவறிந்தார் நெஞ்சில் கரவு

Even a false statement may stand with truth if—and only if—it produces a good wholly free from fault.

நன்மை பயக்கும் எனின்

The ascetic virtue is to guard against desire, for desire can enter by deception and betray a person.

Taking on an ascetic's appearance, entering inaccessible places, and investigating them, the spy does not reveal the mission whatever suffering is inflicted.

துறந்தார் படிவத்த ராகி இறந்தாராய்ந்து
என்செயினும் சோர்விலது ஒற்று

Friendship that smiles only in the face is not friendship; friendship in which the inner heart truly rejoices through affection is friendship.

முகநக நட்பது நட்பன்று நெஞ்சத்து
அகநக நட்பது நட்பு

How bitter—even in dreams—is connection with those whose deeds and words stand apart.

கனவினும் இன்னாது மன்னோ வினைவேறு
சொல்வேறு பட்டார் தொடர்பு

Guard against even slight closeness with those who treat you as a friend in private but disparage you before others.

எனைத்தும் குறுகுதல் ஓம்பல் மனைக்கெழீஇ
மன்றில் பழிப்பார் தொடர்பு

Be wary of deceivers who smile sweetly to one’s face while carrying harmful intent within.

முகத்தின் இனிய நகாஅ அகத்தின்னா
வஞ்சரை அஞ்சப் படும்

When a person’s allegiance is materially unaligned with yours, it is not sound to place confidence in words alone in any matter.

மனத்தின் அமையா தவரை எனைத்தொன்றும்
சொல்லினால் தேறற்பாற்று அன்று

Even when an opponent speaks helpful words like a friend, what those words truly serve soon becomes clear.

நட்டார்போல் நல்லவை சொல்லினும் ஒட்டார்சொல்
ஒல்லை உணரப் படும்

A weapon may lie hidden even within an enemy’s supplicating hands; their tears may conceal the same.

தொழுதகை யுள்ளும் படையொடுங்கும் ஒன்னார்
அழுதகண் ணீரும் அனைத்து

None is more foolish than one who studies and understands restraint, explains it to others, yet does not practise it personally.

ஓதி உணர்ந்தும் பிறர்க்குரைத்தும் தானடங்காப்
பேதையின் பேதையார் இல்

Pretending mastery over what one has not learned casts doubt even upon the subjects one has truly mastered.

கல்லாத மேற்கொண் டொழுகல் கசடற
வல்லதூஉம் ஐயம் தரும்

When internal character faults remain uncorrected, can merely covering bodily nakedness be considered true concealment? That too is shallow understanding.

அற்றம் மறைத்தலோ புல்லறிவு தம்வயின்
குற்றம் மறையா வழி

Though it may appear joined like a metal container fitted with its lid, a household possessed by internal enmity is not truly united.

செப்பின் புணர்ச்சிபோல் கூடினும் கூடாதே
உட்பகை உற்ற குடி

Discern the selfish intent of unprincipled women who measure gain before showing warmth, and avoid their company.

பயன்தூக்கிப் பண்புரைக்கும் பண்பின் மகளிர்
நயன்தூக்கி நள்ளா விடல்

The false embrace of mercenary women is like embracing a strange corpse in a dark room.

பொருட்பெண்டிர் பொய்ம்மை முயக்கம் இருட்டறையில்
ஏதில் பிணந்தழீஇ அற்று

To those lacking discerning wisdom, the embrace of deceitful women is like the fatal grasp of a destructive enchantress.

ஆயும் அறிவினர் அல்லார்க்கு அணங்கென்ப
மாய மகளிர் முயக்கு

Those who drink secretly and reel with clouded eyes will be exposed and mocked by their own townsfolk.

உள்ளொற்றி உள்ளூர் நகப்படுவர் எஞ்ஞான்றும்
கள்ளொற்றிக் கண்சாய் பவர்

Drop the claim 'I was never drunk'; for secret thoughts hidden in the heart spill out in intoxication.

களித்தறியேன் என்பது கைவிடுக நெஞ்சத்து
ஒளித்ததூஉம் ஆங்கே மிகும்

Gambling ruins wealth, leads to falsehood, strips away compassion, and plunges one into misery.

பொருள்கெடுத்துப் பொய்மேற் கொளீஇ அருள்கெடுத்து
அல்லல் உழப்பிக்கும் சூது

Those who seek to live true to an untarnished lineage will not practice deceit or unworthy deeds.

சலம்பற்றிச் சால்பில செய்யார்மா சற்ற
குலம்பற்றி வாழ்தும் என்பார்

Though she speaks like a cold stranger, a loving heart's words are quickly understood.

உறாஅ தவர்போல் சொலினும் செறாஅர்சொல்
ஒல்லை உணரப் படும்

There is a man who wanted me with his words and never cherished me in his heart. And what of it — without the sight of him my eyes will not settle.

பேணாது பெட்டார் உளர்மன்னோ மற்றவர்க்
காணாது அமைவில கண்

In my mind I hold nothing but him; on my tongue there is nothing but his good. And still the pallor came. It is a cheat — or what else would you call it?

உள்ளுவன் மன்யான் உரைப்பது அவர்திறமால்
கள்ளம் பிறவோ பசப்பு
