Virtue alone is what a person must do; whatever earns blame is what must be shunned.

செயற்பால தோரும் அறனே ஒருவற்கு
உயற்பால தோரும் பழி

புகழ்புரிந்த இல்லிலோர்க்கு இல்லை இகழ்வார்முன்
ஏறுபோல் பீடு நடை

ஒழுக்கத்தின் ஒல்கார் உரவோர் இழுக்கத்தின்
ஏதம் படுபாக் கறிந்து

By right conduct people rise to greatness; by lapsing from it they draw disgrace they need never have had.

உள்ளொற்றி உள்ளூர் நகப்படுவர் எஞ்ஞான்றும்
கள்ளொற்றிக் கண்சாய் பவர்

சிறுமை பலசெய்து சீரழக்கும் சூதின்
வறுமை தருவதொன்று இல்

மதிக்கண் மறுப்போல் உயர்ந்து

இன்றி அமையாச் சிறப்பின ஆயினும்
குன்ற வருப விடல்

Like hair fallen from the head, despised by all, are those who fall from their high station of honor.

தலையின் இழிந்த மயிரனையர் மாந்தர்
நிலையின் இழிந்தக் கடை

Even those towering like mountains will fall low if they commit a seed's measure of unworthy action.

குன்றின் அனையாரும் குன்றுவர் குன்றுவ
குன்றி அனைய செயின்

Trailing behind those who despise you brings no fame here nor bliss hereafter; what then is its use?

புகழ்இன்றால் புத்தேள்நாட்டு உய்யாதால் என்மற்று
இகழ்வார்பின் சென்று நிலை

Far better is it to be said that one perished on the spot than to live begging behind those who despise him.

ஒட்டார்பின் சென்றொருவன் வாழ்தலின் அந்நிலையே
கெட்டான் எனப்படுதல் நன்று

Those who shrink from others' shame as from their own are hailed as the true home of honor.

பிறர்பழியும் தம்பழியும் நாணுவார் நாணுக்கு
உறைபதி என்னும் உலகு

If one feels no shame at what others shrink from, virtue itself shrinks from him in disgust.

பிறர்நாணத் தக்கது தான்நாணா னாயின்
அறம்நாணத் தக்கது உடைத்து

Lapsing in conduct stains family honor; but shamelessness utterly destroys every virtue you possess.

குலஞ்சுடும் கொள்கை பிழைப்பின் நலஞ்சுடும்
நாணின்மை நின்றக் கடை

Even if pleading for water to save a dying cow, nothing degrades the tongue like begging.

ஆவிற்கு நீரென்று இரப்பினும் நாவிற்கு
இரவின் இளிவந்த தில்

The heart melts thinking of the shame of begging; thinking of cold refusal, it turns entirely numb.

இரவுள்ள உள்ளம் உருகும் கரவுள்ள
உள்ளதூஉம் இன்றிக் கெடும்

A beggar's life departs at the word of refusal; where does the soul of the refuser hide?

கரப்பவர்க்கு யாங்கொளிக்கும் கொல்லோ இரப்பவர்
சொல்லாடப் போஒம் உயிர்

In outward appearance, the base resemble noble humans; no two opposites share such exact resemblance.

மக்களே போல்வர் கயவர் அவரன்ன
ஒப்பாரி யாங்கண்ட தில்
