Destiny

One need not explain through texts the fruit of virtue; the visible contrast between the palanquin-bearer and the rider shows it plain.

அறத்தாறு இதுவென வேண்டா சிவிகை
பொறுத்தானோடு ஊர்ந்தான் இடை

Loss and gain were settled long ago; so the wise keep an unbending heart, and that is their ornament.

கேடும் பெருக்கமும் இல்லல்ல நெஞ்சத்துக்
கோடாமை சான்றோர்க் கணி

The destiny that brings gain gives rise to tireless effort; the destiny that brings loss gives rise to idleness.

ஆகூழால் தோன்றும் அசைவின்மை கைப்பொருள்
போகூழால் தோன்றும் மடி

When loss-producing destiny arrives, it makes understanding foolish; when gain-producing destiny arrives, it expands understanding.

பேதைப் படுக்கும் இழவூழ் அறிவகற்றும்
ஆகலூழ் உற்றக் கடை

Though one studies many subtle books, one's destiny-shaped underlying understanding will still prevail.

நுண்ணிய நூல்பல கற்பினும் மற்றுந்தன்
உண்மை யறிவே மிகும்

The world's nature has two distinct courses: the destiny for wealth is one, and becoming clear-minded is another.

இருவேறு உலகத்து இயற்கை திருவேறு
தெள்ளிய ராதலும் வேறு

For making wealth, all good things can turn harmful, and harmful things can turn helpful, under destiny's power.

நல்லவை எல்லாஅந் தீயவாம் தீயவும்
நல்லவாம் செல்வம் செயற்கு

What is not allotted to one will not remain despite careful guarding; what is one's own by allotment will not leave even if carried out and scattered.

பரியினும் ஆகாவாம் பாலல்ல உய்த்துச்
சொரியினும் போகா தம

Even for those who gather millions, enjoyment is difficult except in the manner allotted by the One who apportions.

வகுத்தான் வகுத்த வகையல்லால் கோடி
தொகுத்தார்க்கு துய்த்தல் அரிது

Those without means for enjoyment would indeed renounce, if destinies passed without inflicting the sufferings allotted to them.

துறப்பார்மன் துப்புர வில்லார் உறற்பால
ஊட்டா கழியு மெனின்

Those who accept events as good when good fortune comes—why do they suffer when fortune comes otherwise?

நன்றாங்கால் நல்லவாக் காண்பவர் அன்றாங்கால்
அல்லற் படுவ தெவன்?

What is stronger than destiny? Even when one devises another means against it, destiny itself arrives first.

ஊழிற் பெருவலி யாவுள மற்றொன்று
சூழினுந் தான்முந் துறும்

Let every intention aim at elevation; even if fate pushes the result away, that elevated intention is of a nature not to fall.

உள்ளுவ தெல்லாம் உயர்வுள்ளல் மற்றது
தள்ளினுந் தள்ளாமை நீர்த்து

Lack of favourable endowment or fortune is blame to no one. The blame lies in knowing the action required and making no effort when it is genuinely possible.

பொறியின்மை யார்க்கும் பழியன்று அறிவறிந்து
ஆள்வினை இன்மை பழி

Even when fate prevents the intended result, effort is not wholly barren; it yields a return proportionate to the real exertion—skill, knowledge, evidence, or readiness for another opening.

தெய்வத்தான் ஆகா தெனினும் முயற்சிதன்
மெய்வருத்தக் கூலி தரும்

Those who act without agitation or delay, adapting and persisting, make even the fate that obstructs their result turn its back.

ஊழையும் உப்பக்கம் காண்பர் உலைவின்றித்
தாழாது உஞற்று பவர்

If one lacking sound understanding gives with an open heart, it is purely the good fortune and merit of the recipient.

அறிவிலான் நெஞ்சுவந்து ஈதல் பிறிதியாதும்
இல்லை பெறுவான் தவம்

When gain is on its way, one overlooks hostility; when bringing ruin upon oneself, one seeks to magnify it.

இகல்காணான் ஆக்கம் வருங்கால் அதனை
மிகல்காணும் கேடு தரற்கு

To one who resolves to raise their family, providence itself steps forward to lead the way.

குடிசெய்வல் என்னும் ஒருவற்குத் தெய்வம்
மடிதற்றுத் தான்முந் துறும்

When the sinner called poverty strikes, it robs a person of happiness both in this life and the next.

இன்மை எனவொரு பாவி மறுமையும்
இம்மையும் இன்றி வரும்

If the creator destined people to live by begging, may he too wander homeless and perish.

இரந்தும் உயிர்வாழ்தல் வேண்டின் பரந்து
கெடுக உலகியற்றி யான்

The town's rumour sustains my fading life; by good fortune, the gossips do not know it.

அலரெழ ஆருயிர் நிற்கும் அதனைப்
பலரறியார் பாக்கியத் தால்

I have swum the fierce water of love and I cannot see the shore. And at the midnight watch, when everything else sleeps, I am the one still here.

காமக் கடும்புனல் நீந்திக் கரைகாணேன்
யாமத்தும் யானே உளேன்

The eyes that made me a love-grief the sea is not big enough to hold are churning in it now, and cannot close.

படலாற்றா பைதல் உழக்கும் கடலாற்றாக்
காமநோய் செய்தஎன் கண்

Even a woman whom everyone holds dear is without the one closeness that counts, if the man she loves does not love her.
