Death

Say not, 'We will practice virtue in old age,' but do it now; for it remains an undying companion when life departs.

அன்றறிவாம் என்னாது அறஞ்செய்க மற்றது
பொன்றுங்கால் பொன்றாத் துணை

The verse declares death better than a life sustained by backbiting and false smiles—a severe ancient denunciation of the conduct, not advice to die; life remains precious and the behaviour can be changed.

புறங்கூறிப் பொய்த்துயிர் வாழ்தலின் சாதல்
அறங்கூற்றும் ஆக்கத் தரும்

Nothing is more agonizing than death; yet even death becomes sweet when one is utterly unable to give relief to the poor.

சாதலின் இன்னாத தில்லை இனிததூஉம்
ஈதல் இயையாக் கடை

நெருநல் உளனொருவன் இன்றில்லை என்னும்
பெருமை உடைத்துஇவ் வுலகு

The bond between body and life is like a bird flying away while the egg it occupied remains behind alone.

குடம்பை தனித்துஒழியப் புள்பறந் தற்றே
உடம்பொடு உயிரிடை நட்பு

Death is like falling asleep; birth after it is like waking from sleep.

உறங்கு வதுபோலுஞ் சாக்காடு உறங்கி
விழிப்பது போலும் பிறப்பு

Even if the embassy may bring death, the classical envoy does not shrink from securing assured advantage for his sovereign. This extreme royal-loyalty claim must never justify unsafe work or coerced self-sacrifice today.

இறுதி பயப்பினும் எஞ்சாது இறைவற்கு

முன்நின்று கல்நின் றவர்

If a warrior dies in battle so that the ruler who protected him weeps in grateful remembrance, the ancient martial judgement holds such a death worthy even of being begged for.

புரந்தார்கண் நீர்மல்கச் சாகிற்பின் சாக்காடு
இரந்துகோள் தக்கது உடைத்து

The friendship of those who desert one in ruin will burn the heart when remembered, even as death draws near.

கெடுங்காலைக் கைவிடுவார் கேண்மை அடுங்காலை
உள்ளினும் உள்ளஞ் சுடும்

If internal enmity arises under the guise of kinship, it brings countless perils extending even to mortal ruin.

உறல்முறையான் உட்பகை தோன்றின் இறல்முறையான்
ஏதம் பலவும் தரும்

If hostility arises among those joined to him, it is always difficult for a ruler to escape death.

ஒன்றாமை ஒன்றியார் கட்படின் எஞ்ஞான்றும்
பொன்றாமை ஒன்றல் அரிது

For the powerless to do harm to the powerful is like beckoning death with one's own hand.

கூற்றத்தைக் கையால் விளித்தற்றால் ஆற்றுவார்க்கு
ஆற்றாதார் இன்னா செயல்

The sleeping differ not from the dead; and drinkers of alcohol are drinkers of poison.

துஞ்சினார் செத்தாரின் வேறல்லர் எஞ்ஞான்றும்
நஞ்சுண்பார் கள்ளுண் பவர்

Far better is it to be said that one perished on the spot than to live begging behind those who despise him.

கெட்டான் எனப்படுதல் நன்று

மருந்தோமற்று ஊன்ஓம்பும் வாழ்க்கை பெருந்தகைமை
பீடழிய வந்த இடத்து

Like the yak that perishes if it loses a single hair, those of high honor surrender their lives when disgrace strikes.

மயிர்நீப்பின் வாழாக் கவரிமா அன்னார்
உயிர்நீப்பர் மானம் வரின்

One who hoards vast wealth but refuses to enjoy it is dead while living; he can do nothing with it.

வைத்தான்வாய் சான்ற பெரும்பொருள் அஃதுண்ணான்
செத்தான் செயக்கிடந்தது இல்

Those who live for honor will sacrifice life for conscience; they will never abandon conscience for life.

நாணால் உயிரைத் துறப்பர் உயிர்ப்பொருட்டால்
நாண்துறவார் நாணாள் பவர்

I had only heard of Death before, but now I know it: it has a woman's form and warring eyes.

பண்டறியேன் கூற்றென் பதனை இனியறிந்தேன்
பெண்டகையால் பேரமர்க் கட்டு

Is it death, an eye, or a startled doe? The young maid's glance holds the nature of all three.

கூற்றமோ கண்ணோ பிணையோ மடவரல்
நோக்கமிம் மூன்றும் உடைத்து

She wore an anicham flower with its stalk; such tiny weight threatens her delicate waist.

அனிச்சப்பூக் கால்களையாள் பெய்தாள் நுகப்பிற்கு
நல்ல படாஅ பறை

Her presence is like living breath to the body; her departure feels like bitter death.

வாழ்தல் உயிர்க்கன்னள் ஆயிழை சாதல்
அதற்கன்னள் நீங்கும் இடத்து

If there is such a thing as your not going, tell that to me. If what you have to say is that you will return quickly, say it to whoever will still be alive to hear it.

செல்லாமை உண்டேல் எனக்குரை மற்றுநின்
வல்வரவு வாழ்வார்க் குரை

If you would keep my life safe, then hold back the going of the man who holds it. If nobody holds him and he leaves, there will be no meeting again.

ஓம்பின் அமைந்தார் பிரிவோம்பல் மற்றவர்
நீங்கின் அரிதால் புணர்வு

Long life to you, evening — but evening you are not. You are the last hour, come to eat the lives of women who are wedded.

மாலையோ அல்லை மணந்தார் உயிருண்ணும்
வேலைநீ வாழி பொழுது

Remembering the man whose very nature is the getting of wealth, at this bewildering evening my life, which would not perish, is perishing.

பொருள்மாலை யாளரை உள்ளி மருள்மாலை
மாயும்என் மாயா உயிர்

What is the good of winning her back, what is the good of having won her, what is the good even of holding her, if by then her heart has broken and run out of her?
