Compassion

The virtuous rightly called Anthanar are those who live embracing gracious compassion toward all living beings.

அந்தணர் என்போர் அறவோர்மற் றெவ்வுயிர்க்கும்
செந்தண்மை பூண்டொழுக லான்

Even when someone wrongs you without cause, take the better path: ache for their fault, but do nothing unjust yourself.

திறனல்ல தற்பிறர் செய்யினும் நோநொந்து
அறனல்ல செய்யாமை நன்று

Even one who loves grace and walks the household path to it is ruined the moment he covets another's wealth and plots crooked ways to get it.

அருள்வெஃகி ஆற்றின்கண் நின்றான் பொருள்வெஃகிப்
பொல்லாத சூழக் கெடும்

Wealth in the hands of a benevolent person is like a fruitful tree ripening in the heart of town, freely accessible to all.

பயன்மரம் உள்ளூர்ப் பழுத்தற்றால் செல்வம்
நயனுடை யான்கண் படின்

Compassion toward all living beings is the wealth of wealths; mere material riches are possessed even by the base and ignoble.

அருட்செல்வம் செல்வத்துள் செல்வம் பொருட்செல்வம்
பூரியார் கண்ணும் உள

Discern the good path and cultivate universal compassion; examine life through every philosophy, and compassion alone remains your ultimate support.

நல்லாற்றாள் நாடி அருளாள்க பல்லாற்றால்
தேரினும் அஃதே துணை

For those whose hearts are filled with universal compassion, there is no entry into the dark, sorrowful realm of misery.

அருள்சேர்ந்த நெஞ்சினார்க் கில்லை இருள்சேர்ந்த
இன்னா உலகம் புகல்

For one who cherishes living beings and practices compassion, there exists no wrongful deed that causes their own soul to tremble in fear.

மன்னுயிர் ஓம்பி அருளாள்வார்க்கு இல்லென்ப
தன்னுயிர் அஞ்சும் வினை

Misery never touches those who govern their lives by compassion; the vast, fertile earth through which the winds blow stands as proof.

அல்லல் அருளாள்வார்க்கு இல்லை வளிவழங்கும்
மல்லன்மா ஞாலங் கரி

Those who abandon compassion to commit cruel deeds have forgotten the suffering they brought upon themselves when they formerly failed to pursue virtue.

பொருள்நீங்கிப் பொச்சாந்தார் என்பர் அருள்நீங்கி
அல்லவை செய்தொழுகு வார்

Just as this earthly world offers no joy to those without material resources, the higher spiritual realm offers no entry to those without compassion.

அருளில்லார்க்கு அவ்வுலகம் இல்லை பொருளில்லார்க்கு
இவ்வுலகம் இல்லாகி யாங்கு

Those stripped of material wealth may one day rise and prosper again; but those devoid of compassion remain morally ruined, and their restoration is exceedingly rare.

பொருளற்றார் பூப்பர் ஒருகால் அருளற்றார்
அற்றார்மற் றாதல் அரிது

When examined closely, the supposed virtue performed by someone devoid of compassion is as hollow as an ignorant fool claiming to perceive ultimate truth.

தெருளாதான் மெய்ப்பொருள் கண்டற்றால் தேரின்
அருளாதான் செய்யும் அறம்

When tempted to oppress someone weaker than yourself, remember how you trembled with fear when standing before someone stronger.

வலியார்முன் தன்னை நினைக்கதான் தன்னின்
மெலியார்மேல் செல்லு மிடத்து

How can compassion govern someone who, to enlarge their own flesh, eats the flesh of another living being?

தன்னூன் பெருக்கற்குத் தான்பிறிது ஊனுண்பான்
எங்ஙனம் ஆளும் அருள்?

Those who do not safeguard wealth cannot receive its benefit; likewise, those who eat flesh cannot receive the governing benefit of compassion.

பொருளாட்சி போற்றாதார்க்கு இல்லை அருளாட்சி
ஆங்கில்லை ஊன்தின் பவர்க்கு

As the mind of one holding a killing weapon does not incline toward good, the mind of one who has savoured another creature's body does not incline toward good.

படைகொண்டார் நெஞ்சம்போல் நன்னூக்காது ஒன்றன்
உடல்சுவை உண்டார் மனம்

If asked what compassion is: it is non-killing. If asked what is opposed to it: it is killing. Therefore, eating the flesh produced by that killing is not morally right.

அருளல்ல தியாதெனிற் கொல்லாமை கோறல்
பொருளல்லது அவ்வூன் தினல்

One should abstain from flesh if one comes to understand that flesh is the wound of another living being.

உண்ணாமை வேண்டும் புலாஅல் பிறிதொன்றன்
புண்ணது உணர்வார்ப் பெறின்

Compassion-guided love is absent in those who desire another's property and watch for an unguarded moment.

அருள்கருதி அன்புடைய ராதல் பொருள்கருதிப்
பொச்சாப்புப் பார்ப்பார்கண் இல்

Generosity, gracious concern, just rule, and care for the people—one who possesses all four is a light among rulers.

கொடையளி செங்கோல் குடியோம்பல் நான்கும்
உடையானாம் வேந்தர்க் கொளி

As the absence of rain afflicts living beings across the world, the absence of a ruler's compassionate protection afflicts those who live under his rule.

துளியின்மை ஞாலத்திற்கு எற்றற்றே வேந்தன்
அளியின்மை வாழும் உயிர்க்கு

If a ruler is harsh in speech and without compassionate regard, his great prosperity will fail there and then, without endurance.

கடுஞ்சொல்லன் கண்ணிலன் ஆயின் நெடுஞ்செல்வம்
நீடின்றி ஆங்கே கெடும்

The world endures because rulers possess the surpassingly great grace called considerate regard.

கண்ணோட்டம் என்னும் கழிபெருங் காரிகை
உண்மையான் உண்டிவ் வுலகு

The ways of the world rest in considerate regard; those without it are but a burden upon the earth.

கண்ணோட்டத் துள்ளது உலகியல் அஃதிலார்
உண்மை நிலக்குப் பொறை

What use is a musical mode if it does not suit the song? What use are eyes that hold no considerate regard?

பண்என்னாம் பாடற்கு இயைபின்றேல் கண்என்னாம்
கண்ணோட்டம் இல்லாத கண்

What do eyes merely present on the face accomplish, if they show no considerate regard in due measure?

உளபோல் முகத்தெவன் செய்யும் அளவினால்
கண்ணோட்டம் இல்லாத கண்

Considerate regard is the eye's true ornament; without it, the eye is perceived as a wound.

கண்ணிற்கு அணிகலம் கண்ணோட்டம் அஃதின்றேல்
புண்ணென்று உணரப் படும்

Those furnished with eyes yet offering no considerate regard are like trees rooted to the earth.

மண்ணோ டியைந்த மரத்தனையர் கண்ணோ
டியைந்துகண் ணோடா தவர்

Those without considerate regard are without eyes; among those who truly have eyes, regard cannot be absent.

கண்ணோட்டம் இல்லவர் கண்ணிலர் கண்ணுடையார்
கண்ணோட்டம் இன்மையும் இல்

The world rightfully belongs to those who can show considerate regard without letting their duty fail.

கருமம் சிதையாமல் கண்ணோட வல்லார்க்கு
உரிமை உடைத்திவ் வுலகு

For rulers, foremost is the quality of showing regard and patiently forbearing even toward people inclined to punish or hurt them.

ஒறுத்தாற்றும் பண்பினார் கண்ணும்கண் ணோடிப்
பொறுத்தாற்றும் பண்பே தலை

Those who seek admirable civility would knowingly drink even poison mixed for them by familiar hands and remain composed.

பெயக்கண்டும் நஞ்சுண் டமைவர் நயத்தக்க
நாகரிகம் வேண்டு பவர்

If one gains a person who can look into the mind through signs, understand the distress that has befallen, and relieve it, merely standing face to face is enough.

முகம்நோக்கி நிற்க அமையும் அகம்நோக்கி
உற்ற துணர்வார்ப் பெறின்

Rulers should refuse and let go of revenue that does not come with compassion toward their subjects and the subjects' reciprocal affection.

அருளொடும் அன்பொடும் வாராப் பொருளாக்கம்
புல்லார் புரள விடல்

Compassion is the child born of love; wealth is the resource-endowed nurse through whom that child is sustained and grows.

அருளென்னும் அன்பீன் குழவி பொருளென்னும்
செல்வச் செவிலியால் உண்டு

Fearless attack is called great martial valour; when a setback befalls the enemy, magnanimously helping them is that valour's sharper edge.

பேராண்மை என்ப தறுகண்ஒன் றுற்றக்கால்
ஊராண்மை மற்றதன் எஃகு

Friendship turns a person away from ruinous courses, guides that person onto a good path, and shares the suffering when unavoidable adversity arrives.

அழிவி னவைநீக்கி ஆறுய்த்து அழிவின்கண்
அல்லல் உழப்பதாம் நட்பு

As the hand moves at once when a person’s garment slips, friendship goes there and then to remove a friend’s distress.

உடுக்கை இழந்தவன் கைபோல ஆங்கே
இடுக்கண் களைவதாம் நட்பு

Gambling ruins wealth, leads to falsehood, strips away compassion, and plunges one into misery.

பொருள்கெடுத்துப் பொய்மேற் கொளீஇ அருள்கெடுத்து
அல்லல் உழப்பிக்கும் சூது

Greatness shields the weaknesses of others; smallness loudly broadcasts their faults.

அற்றம் மறைக்கும் பெருமை சிறுமைதான்
குற்றமே கூறி விடும்

Love, modesty, helpful benevolence, compassionate regard, and truthfulness: these five are the pillars of noble character.

அன்புநாண் ஒப்புரவு கண்ணோட்டம் வாய்மையொடு
ஐந்துசால் ஊன்றிய தூண்

Those who shrink from others' shame as from their own are hailed as the true home of honor.

பிறர்பழியும் தம்பழியும் நாணுவார் நாணுக்கு
உறைபதி என்னும் உலகு

Those who live by the labor of their own hands never beg; they give freely to all who ask.

இரவார் இரப்பார்க்கொன்று ஈவர் கரவாது
கைசெய்தூண் மாலை யவர்

Even if pleading for water to save a dying cow, nothing degrades the tongue like begging.

ஆவிற்கு நீரென்று இரப்பினும் நாவிற்கு
இரவின் இளிவந்த தில்

The heart melts thinking of the shame of begging; thinking of cold refusal, it turns entirely numb.

இரவுள்ள உள்ளம் உருகும் கரவுள்ள
உள்ளதூஉம் இன்றிக் கெடும்

Never having suffered love's agony themselves, the foolish openly mock me to my face.

யாம்கண்ணின் காண நகுப அறிவில்லார்
யாம்பட்ட தாம்படா ஆறு

What rain from the sky is to people who live by nothing else, the tenderness a loved one grants is to the one who loves.

வாழ்வார்க்கு வானம் பயந்தற்றால் வீழ்வார்க்கு
வீழ்வார் அளிக்கும் அளி

Does he not see the wasting, does he not see the colour going out of her — this Kaman, who takes his stand at one of the two and keeps at his work there?

பருவரலும் பைதலும் காணான்கொல் காமன்
ஒருவர்கண் நின்றொழுகு வான்

He grants me nothing in my waking hours; my life holds on by the sight of him in dream.

நனவினால் நல்கா தவரைக் கனவினால்
காண்டலின் உண்டென் உயிர்

The cruel man grants me nothing in my waking hours — by what right does he come and torment me in my dreams?

நனவினால் நல்காக் கொடியார் கனவனால்
என்எம்மைப் பீழிப் பது

It is those who never meet their lover in dream who reproach him for not coming to them in waking.

நனவினால் நல்காரை நோவர் கனவினால்
காதலர்க் காணா தவர்

Long life to you, bewildering evening — you look stricken yourself. Tell me: is the one who keeps you company as pitiless as mine?

புன்கண்ணை வாழி மருள்மாலை எம்கேள்போல்
வன்கண்ண தோநின் துணை

Your eyes, gone sallow and running with tears, look as though they are telling other people that the man we set our hearts on has withheld his kindness.

நயந்தவர் நல்காமை சொல்லுவ போலும்
பசந்து பனிவாரும் கண்

These arms, their bangles slipped away and their old beauty faded, are themselves speaking aloud the cruelty of that cruel man.

கொடியார் கொடுமை உரைக்கும் தொடியொடு
தொல்கவின் வாடிய தோள்

That my shoulders slacken and the bangles go with them, I bear. What I grieve at, and grieve at inwardly, is hearing you call him cruel for it.

தொடியொடு தோள்நெகிழ நோவல் அவரைக்
கொடியர் எனக்கூறல் நொந்து

What comes of sitting here, heart, remembering him and aching? In the man who gave this wasting sickness there is no such remembering, and no pity.

இருந்துள்ளி என்பரிதல் நெஞ்சே பரிந்துள்ளல்
பைதல்நோய் செய்தார்கண் இல்

You ache that he has not come back out of pity, and then you set off after the very man who chose to part: you know nothing, my heart.

பரிந்தவர் நல்காரென்று ஏங்கிப் பிரிந்தவர்
பின்செல்வாய் பேதைஎன் நெஞ்சு

To leave those who sulked at you without ending the sulk and holding them is to lay a fresh grief on people already worn out by grief.
