Betrayal

Those who betray the home of a friend who trusts them are, though living, no different from the dead.

தீமை புரிந்து ஒழுகுவார்

Those who were once one's own and left because they could not remain in accord return as one's circle when the cause of that non-agreement no longer exists on one's side.

One minister beside the ruler who secretly plans harm brings greater danger than an immense multitude of open enemies.

A fort is hard to capture by close encirclement, by a concentrated assault without full surrounding, or by covertly inducing those within to open it.

முற்றியும் முற்றா தெறிந்தும் அறைப்படுத்தும்
பற்றற் கரியது அரண்

That alone is a true army which is not destroyed in battle, cannot be undermined or bought away by the enemy, and possesses hardiness carried through long continuity.

வஞ்சரை அஞ்சப் படும்

When a person’s allegiance is materially unaligned with yours, it is not sound to place confidence in words alone in any matter.

மனத்தின் அமையா தவரை எனைத்தொன்றும்
சொல்லினால் தேறற்பாற்று அன்று

Even when an opponent speaks helpful words like a friend, what those words truly serve soon becomes clear.

நட்டார்போல் நல்லவை சொல்லினும் ஒட்டார்சொல்
ஒல்லை உணரப் படும்

Do not take an enemy’s deferential words as goodwill: the bow’s bend, too, is directed toward harm.

நட்பினுள் சாப்புல்லற் பாற்று

When a time comes in which enemies act as friends, meet them with outward friendship while withholding inward trust, and afterward let that posture go.

பகைநட்பாம் காலம் வருங்கால் முகநட்டு

அளித்தஞ்சல் என்றவர் நீப்பின் தெளித்தசொல்
தேறியார்க்கு உண்டோ தவறு

If he can stand in front of me and speak the parting aloud, he has the hard eye for it — and the hungry hope that he will one day be tender is a hope I must let go.

பிரிவுரைக்கும் வன்கண்ணர் ஆயின் அரிதவர்
நல்குவர் என்னும் நசை

துறைவன் துறந்தமை தூற்றாகொல் முன்கை
இறைஇறவா நின்ற வளை
