Silence

Even those without learning may appear very good if they can remain silent before learned people.

கல்லா தவரும் நனிநல்லர் கற்றார்முன்
சொல்லா திருக்கப் பெறின்

The true spy is one whose appearance arouses no suspicion, who does not fear a hostile gaze, and who can keep from divulging the secret under any pressure.

கடாஅ உருவொடு கண்ணஞ்சாது யாண்டும்
உகாஅமை வல்லதே ஒற்று

Do not honour a spy in a way others can know; if the ruler does so, he himself makes the secret public.

சிறப்பறிய ஒற்றின்கண் செய்யற்க செய்யின்
புறப்படுத்தான் ஆகும் மறை

Strength lies in carrying an undertaking so that it becomes known at completion; if exposed midway, that exposure can bring trouble not easily removed.

கடைக்கொட்கச் செய்தக்க தாண்மை இடைக்கொட்கின்
எற்றா விழுமந் தரும்

Do not overhear or press to discover any of the ruler's secrets; listen when the ruler voluntarily discloses the matter.

எப்பொருளும் ஓரார் தொடரார்மற் றப்பொருளை
விட்டக்கால் கேட்க மறை

Do not tell your suffering to those unable to understand it, and do not expose your weakness in the presence of an enemy.

நோவற்க நொந்தது அறியார்க்கு மேவற்க
மென்மை பகைவர் அகத்து

When the eyes of lovers meet in mutual understanding, spoken words have no purpose left.

கண்ணொடு கண்இணை நோக்கொக்கின் வாய்ச்சொற்கள்
என்ன பயனும் இல

I do keep this sickness hidden, for all the good it does. It only rises higher, the way the water in a spring rises for the people who keep baling it out.

மறைப்பேன்மன் யானிஃதோ நோயை இறைப்பவர்க்கு
ஊற்றுநீர் போல மிகும்

I have not the strength left to hide this sickness. And telling it to the man who caused it brings its own restraint down on me. Both doors are shut.

கரத்தலும் ஆற்றேன்இந் நோயைநோய் செய்தார்க்கு
உரைத்தலும் நாணுத் தரும்

I was the one who agreed to it, when the man who wanted me asked to keep himself away. So this faded state I am in now — whom else is there to tell it to?

நயந்தவர்க்கு நல்காமை நேர்ந்தேன் பசந்தவென்
பண்பியார்க்கு உரைக்கோ பிற

You may hide it, but your dark eyes will not go along with the hiding. They have gone out past your hand, and there is something they are setting out to say.

கரப்பினுங் கையிகந் தொல்லாநின் உண்கண்
உரைக்கல் உறுவதொன் றுண்டு

ஊடி இருந்தேமாத் தும்மினார் யாம்தம்மை
நீடுவாழ் கென்பாக் கறிந்து
