Fear

Hatred, sin, fear, and disgrace — these four never leave the man who violates another's home.

பகைபாவம் அச்சம் பழியென நான்கும்
இகவாவாம் இல்லிறப்பான் கண்

Those accustomed to wrongdoing feel no dread of evil deeds; but the noble and virtuous dread that reckless arrogance as a mortal danger.

தீவினையார் அஞ்சார் விழுமியார் அஞ்சுவர்
தீவினை என்னும் செருக்கு

Because evil deeds inevitably produce suffering for the doer, one must fear doing evil even more than physical fire. Fire burns only what it touches; evil deeds destroy one's soul and posterity.

தீயவை தீய பயத்தலால் தீயவை
தீயினும் அஞ்சப் படும்

For one who cherishes living beings and practices compassion, there exists no wrongful deed that causes their own soul to tremble in fear.

மன்னுயிர் ஓம்பி அருளாள்வார்க்கு இல்லென்ப
தன்னுயிர் அஞ்சும் வினை

When tempted to oppress someone weaker than yourself, remember how you trembled with fear when standing before someone stronger.

வலியார்முன் தன்னை நினைக்கதான் தன்னின்
மெலியார்மேல் செல்லு மிடத்து

Among all who renounced household life from fear of continued birth, foremost is the one who fears the wrong of killing and keeps non-killing in mind.

Those who fear the reproach of disgrace do not begin an undertaking that has not been examined into clarity.

தெளிவி லதனைத் தொடங்கார் இளிவென்னும்
ஏதப்பாடு அஞ்சு பவர்

Just as a fort cannot benefit one whose mind is ruled by fear, no resource benefits one whose mind carries forgetful negligence.

அச்ச முடையார்க்கு அரணில்லை ஆங்கில்லை
பொச்சாப் புடையார்க்கு நன்கு

If a ruler follows a cruel sceptre through deeds that make the people tremble, he will certainly perish quickly.

வெருவந்த செய்தொழுகும் வெங்கோல னாயின்
ஒருவந்தம் ஒல்லைக் கெடும்

The king who has not built a fort before war arrives will be seized by fear when battle comes and will perish swiftly.

செருவந்த போழ்திற் சிறைசெய்யா வேந்தன்
வெருவந்து வெய்து கெடும்

Though the elephant is huge and armed with sharp tusks, it fears when a tiger attacks.

பரியது கூர்ங்கோட்டது ஆயினும் யானை
வெரூஉம் புலிதாக் குறின்

Rulers of a smaller realm, fearing their people's inward trembling when confronted by greater power, bow and accept when fitting terms of peace are available.

விழித்தகண் வேல்கொண டெறிய அழித்திமைப்பின்
ஒட்டன்றோ வன்க ணவர்க்கு

One who fears what need not be feared, does not learn what must be known, lacks accord, and will not give becomes easy for an enemy to overcome.

அஞ்சும் அறியான் அமைவிலன் ஈகலான்
தஞ்சம் எளியன் பகைக்கு

If one meets an enemy ignorant of justice and fearful, the lofty advantage of those opposing that enemy will not depart.

செறுவார்க்குச் சேணிகவா இன்பம் அறிவிலா
அஞ்சும் பகைவர்ப் பெறின்

Do not fear the enemy who stands openly like a sword; beware the association of an enemy who appears like kin.

யாண்டுச்சென்று யாண்டும் உளராகார் வெந்துப்பின்
வேந்து செறப்பட் டவர்

The servility of submitting meekly to one's wife will always cause shame among the noble.

இல்லாள்கண் தாழ்ந்த இயல்பின்மை எஞ்ஞான்றும்
நல்லாருள் நாணுத் தரும்

The enterprise of a person lacking virtue who lives in fear of his wife can never achieve greatness.

மனையாளை அஞ்சும் மறுமையி லாளன்
வினையாண்மை வீறெய்த லின்று

He who fears his wife will always fear doing good deeds for the virtuous.

இல்லாளை அஞ்சுவான் அஞ்சுமற் றெஞ்ஞான்றும்
நல்லார்க்கு நல்ல செயல்

Though they live in heavenly splendor, those who cower before their wives possess no true dignity.

இமையாரின் வாழினும் பாடிலரே இல்லாள்
அமையார்தோள் அஞ்சு பவர்

Will the poverty that killed me with suffering yesterday return today? What will I do if it comes?

இன்றும் வருவது கொல்லோ நெருநலும்
கொன்றது போலும் நிரப்பு

One might even find sleep lying in a fire; but in the grip of poverty, all sleep is impossible.

நெருப்பினுள் துஞ்சலும் ஆகும் நிரப்பினுள்
யாதொன்றும் கண்பாடு அரிது

Fear of punishment is the only virtue of the base; or rare greed may coax a little out.

அச்சமே கீழ்களது ஆசாரம் எச்சம்
அவாவுண்டேல் உண்டாம் சிறிது

The base will not flick water off their hand for beggars; they give only to a threatening fist.

கூன்கையர் அல்லா தவர்க்கு

புன்கண் உடைத்தால் புணர்வு

காமக் கடல்மன்னும் உண்டே அதுநீந்தும்
ஏமப் புணைமன்னும் இல்

When he does not come they do not sleep, watching the road for him; when he comes they do not sleep, dreading the parting. Either way my eyes have taken a grief past bearing.

வாராக்கால் துஞ்சா வரின்துஞ்சா ஆயிடை
ஆரஞர் உற்றன கண்

Darkness keeps its eye on the lamp, waiting for the flame to fail; just so, this pallor keeps its eye on my lord's embrace, waiting for it to slacken.

விளக்கற்றம் பார்க்கும் இருளேபோல் கொண்கன்
முயக்கற்றம் பார்க்கும் பசப்பு

Long life to you, evening — but evening you are not. You are the last hour, come to eat the lives of women who are wedded.

மாலையோ அல்லை மணந்தார் உயிருண்ணும்
வேலைநீ வாழி பொழுது

The evening that once came budding with dew and paling as it came now comes with loathing in bud, and grief growing larger the longer it stays.

பனிஅரும்பிப் பைதல்கொள் மாலை துனிஅரும்பித்
துன்பம் வளர வரும்

With the one I love not here, evening comes the way strangers come into a killing-ground — with no bond to me at all, and with my life as its errand.

காதலர் இல்வழி மாலை கொலைக்களத்து
ஏதிலர் போல வரும்

The herdsman's flute has become the messenger of an evening that burns like fire, and the weapon that kills me when it arrives.

அழல்போலும் மாலைக்குத் தூதாகி ஆயன்
குழல்போலும் கொல்லும் படை

At the hour when evening spreads and even those who look on lose their bearings, this whole town will be bewildered and will ache as I do.

பெறாஅமை அஞ்சும் பெறின்பிரிவு அஞ்சும்
அறாஅ இடும்பைத்தென் நெஞ்சு

Inside the sulk itself there is a pain of its own — the thought, will the coming together be put off from here, or will it not?
