Backbiting

Even a man who does no good and commits wrongs is well spoken of, sweetly, if people can at least say, 'He does not backbite.'

அறங்கூறான் அல்ல செயினும் ஒருவன்
புறங்கூறான் என்றல் இனிது

To deny that virtue exists and then do evil is bad; but to smile to a person's face and tear them down behind their back is worse.

அறனழீஇ அல்லவை செய்தலின் தீதே
புறனழீஇப் பொய்த்து நகை

The verse declares death better than a life sustained by backbiting and false smiles—a severe ancient denunciation of the conduct, not advice to die; life remains precious and the behaviour can be changed.

புறங்கூறிப் பொய்த்துயிர் வாழ்தலின் சாதல்
அறங்கூற்றும் ஆக்கத் தரும்

Even if someone has rebuked you to your face, mercilessly, do not say behind their back a word that ignores its consequences.

கண்ணின்று கண்ணறச் சொல்லினும் சொல்லற்க
முன்னின்று பின்நோக்காச் சொல்

However a person's lips may praise virtue, the meanness of heart behind the praise shows in the very fact that they backbite.

அறஞ்சொல்லும் நெஞ்சத்தான் அன்மை புறஞ்சொல்லும்
புன்மையாற் காணப் படும்

Whoever speaks ill of another behind his back will have his own faults — the most wounding of them — picked out and told to his face.

பிறன்பழி கூறுவான் தன்பழி யுள்ளும்
திறன்தெரிந்து கூறப் படும்

Those who don't know how to speak warmly and win friends will, by divisive talk, split apart even close companions.

பகச்சொல்லிக் கேளிர்ப் பிரிப்பர் நகச்சொல்லி
நட்பாடல் தேற்றா தவர்

Those whose habit is to broadcast even an intimate friend's faults — what will they not do to a mere stranger?

துன்னியார் குற்றமும் தூற்றும் மரபினார்
என்னைகொல் ஏதிலார் மாட்டு

How can the earth bear on her own body the one who waits for another's back to turn and speaks low words? It seems she bears him only because forbearance is her own virtue.

அறன்நோக்கி ஆற்றுங்கொல் வையம் புறன்நோக்கிப்
புன்சொல் உரைப்பான் பொறை

If a person could see his own faults as clearly as he sees an enemy's, would any evil ever come to his enduring life?

ஏதிலார் குற்றம்போல் தங்குற்றங் காண்கிற்பின்
தீதுண்டோ மன்னும் உயிர்க்கு

Guard against even slight closeness with those who treat you as a friend in private but disparage you before others.

எனைத்தும் குறுகுதல் ஓம்பல் மனைக்கெழீஇ
மன்றில் பழிப்பார் தொடர்பு

Greatness shields the weaknesses of others; smallness loudly broadcasts their faults.

அற்றம் மறைக்கும் பெருமை சிறுமைதான்
குற்றமே கூறி விடும்

As penance rests upon non-killing, so noble character rests upon speaking no evil of others.

கொல்லா நலத்தது நோன்மை பிறர்தீமை
சொல்லா நலத்தது சால்பு

Envious at seeing others well clothed and fed, the base invent non-existent faults to slander them.

உடுப்பதூஉம் உண்பதூஉம் காணின் பிறர்மேல்
வடுக்காண வற்றாகும் கீழ்

I refuse to blink lest he be hidden, yet the town claims my lover is cold and unkind.

இமைப்பின் கரப்பாக்கு அறிவல் அனைத்திற்கே
ஏதிலர் என்னும் இவ்வூர்

He dwells joyfully within my heart, though the foolish town gossips that he has left me.

உவந்துறைவர் உள்ளத்துள் என்றும் இகந்துறைவர்
ஏதிலர் என்னும் இவ்வூர்

The town's rumour sustains my fading life; by good fortune, the gossips do not know it.

அலரெழ ஆருயிர் நிற்கும் அதனைப்
பலரறியார் பாக்கியத் தால்

Not knowing how hard she is to win, the town kindly links her name with mine.

மலரன்ன கண்ணாள் அருமை அறியாது
அலரெமக்கு ஈந்ததிவ் வூர்

Is not the town's gossip a boon? Hearing it gives my heart the joy of union.

உறாஅதோ ஊரறிந்த கெளவை அதனைப்
பெறாஅது பெற்றன்ன நீர்த்து

Nourished by the town's whispers, my love blooms; without it, it would have withered away.

கவ்வையால் கவ்விது காமம் அதுவின்றேல்
தவ்வென்னும் தன்மை இழந்து

Like wine growing sweeter with every sip, love turns sweeter whenever gossip bares it.

களித்தொறும் கள்ளுண்டல் வேட்டற்றால் காமம்
வெளிப்படுந் தோறும் இனிது

I saw him for only a single day, but the rumour spread like news of a lunar eclipse.

கண்டது மன்னும் ஒருநாள் அலர்மன்னும்
திங்களைப் பாம்புகொண் டற்று

The town's gossip is fertilizer and mother's scolding is water; my love only grows taller.

ஊரவர் கெளவை எருவாக அன்னைசொல்
நீராக நீளும்இந் நோய்

Trying to quench love with public gossip is like trying to put out fire with ghee.

நெய்யால் எரிநுதுப்பேம் என்றற்றால் கெளவையால்
காமம் நுதுப்பேம் எனல்

When he who promised never to leave has gone, why should I fear the chatter of strangers?

அலர்நாண ஒல்வதோ அஞ்சலோம்பு என்றார்
பலர்நாண நீத்தக் கடை

The town gave me the very scandal I wanted; now my beloved will gladly take my hand.

தாம்வேண்டின் நல்குவர் காதலர் யாம்வேண்டும்
கெளவை எடுக்கும்இவ் வூர்

When people have eyes like mine, eyes that go about beating a drum, whatever they are holding down inside is no hard thing for the town to come by.

மறைபெறல் ஊரார்க்கு அரிதன்றால் எம்போல்
அறைபறை கண்ணார் அகத்து

That she has gone pale — that is all anyone says. There is not one person who says that he was the one who left her.

பசந்தாள் இவள்என்பது அல்லால் இவளைத்
துறந்தார் அவர்என்பார் இல்

If they will not go about saying that the man who won my consent has withheld his grace, then to be given the name 'pallor' is good enough for me.
