Not equal to them, but their head. The quiet competence of a well-lived ordinary life is placed at the summit of the spiritual order.
முயல்வோர் எல்லாரிலும் தலை.
ஒரு வியக்கத்தக்க தரவரிசையை இக்குறள் செய்கிறது: இல்வாழ்வைத் தன் இயல்பான, முறையான வழியில் வாழ்பவன், விடுதலைநோக்கி முயல்வோர் எல்லாரிலும் முதல்வன் — துறவிகள், துறந்தோர், உலகை விட்டுச் சென்ற தேடுவோர் ஆகியோருக்கு முன்னவன். அவருக்குச் சமன் அல்ல, அவர்களின் தலை. நன்கு வாழப்பட்ட சாதாரண வாழ்வின் அமைதியான திறமை, ஆன்மீக ஒழுங்கின் உச்சியில் வைக்கப் படுகிறது.

Everything turns on iyalpu — the proper, natural way. The verse does not praise just any household life, but the one lived as it ought to be: within bounds, without strain, true to its own nature. There is no heroics here, no spectacular renunciation — only a life conducted rightly in the ordinary channel. Valluvar's claim is that doing the everyday thing well, without distortion, is the harder and higher achievement.
'இயல்பு' மீதான கனம்.
எல்லாம் இயல்பின் மீதே சுழல்கிறது — முறையான, இயற்கையான வழி. எந்த இல்வாழ்வையும் இக்குறள் புகழவில்லை; இருக்கவேண்டியபடி வாழப்பட்டதையே — எல்லைக்குள், விரிசல் இன்றி, தன் இயல்புக்கு உண்மையாக. இங்கு வீரதீரம் இல்லை, கண்கவர் துறவு இல்லை — சாதாரண வழியில் சரியாக நடத்தப்பட்ட வாழ்வு மட்டுமே. அன்றாட செயலைச் சிதைவின்றி நன்றாகச் செய்வதே கடினமான, உயர்ந்த சாதனை என்பது வள ்ளுவரின் கூற்று.
No need to flee to excel.
The verse dismantles a quiet snobbery — that the spiritually serious must leave ordinary life behind. On the contrary: the householder who stays, and lives well, outranks the one who fled. The arena of marriage, work, children, neighbours, money is not an obstacle to the higher life but the place where it is most fully tested and, lived rightly, most fully achieved.

ஆன்மீகத்தில் தீவிரமானவர் சாதாரண வாழ்வைப் பின்னால் விட்டுச்செல்லவேண்டும் என்னும் அமைதியான மேட்டிமையை இக்குறள் உடைக்கிறது. மாறாக: தங்கி நன்றாக வாழும் இல்லறத்தான், ஓடியவனுக்கு மேலானவன். திருமணம், வேலை, பிள்ளைகள், அண்டையோர், பணம் ஆகியவற்றின் களம் உயர்வாழ்வுக்குத் தடை அல்ல; அது மிக முழுமையாகச் சோதிக்கப்படும், சரியாக வாழ்ந்தால் மிக முழுமையாகச் சாதிக்கப்படும் இடமே.
